Occasionally but mostly I'm burning savings. I got pretty used to a low standard of living in the couple of years before I entered software development, so when I started making money, I saved a lot of it. If being confined to one place for work doesn't currently suit me, then neither do many of the material trappings of rooting: accumulation of consumer goods, a nice home, etc.
It's really tough for remote jobs. In-person jobs, on the other hand: people are literally reaching out to me (a first in my career) about on-site jobs but it's just not tenable for my lifestyle atm. So yeah I've been unemployed for nearly a year now.
Re:Ask HN: Have you used Arc Browser on Wednesday July 26, 2023 @01:28PM (#36881461)
Yes, been using it since it came out... What a year ago? I'm not even sure how long it's been but I was sold on it pretty fast. I don't even utilize many of its features, but the side tab bar (omg I actually know what websites are titled again) and split views are great. The search bar is not really much different from other browsers, but the experience of using it is better. Tab lifecycles changed my life.
You have two separate issues here: 1) Get better at playing uke (develop technique) 2) Have fun (develop passion)

For number one, figure out chords and scales. These are key shortcuts to harmony and melody, to soulful accompaniment and wicked solos. Practice different strumming patterns to achieve different rhythms.

For the second, look up uke tabs to songs you think are fun. Find someone who wants to sing or can back you up on trombone and work on learning songs together. When you can play songs, alone or with others, start adding your own twists to them - slow down during the third chorus (tempo), crescendo in the B section (dynamics), try using your uke for percussion in between strums (timbre). Remember whenever you play, that each performance is an act of creation in and of itself.

Lastly, record yourself, and listen, and work on the things you thought sucked.

Are there studies to this effect? I've sat on hiring committees where we rejected competent men who were jerks or maybe even just a little too cold for our liking. Don't want my anecdotal experience clouding my perception of reality if they don't match.

I responded. I must be on ghost mode.

I'll boost music for a cut of the royalties too, AND my name is slightly more reputable than Spotify's

No. I'm definitely the high maintenance one in our relationship.
Re:Dutch Ethical Hacker Logs into Trump’s Twitter Account on Sunday October 25, 2020 @01:54PM (#24888314)
I read the article too, mate. It doesn't change my mind on the matter. If someone broke into my house, my righteous indignation would not be assuaged by their refusal to steal and immediate disclosure to me of how easily my lock was compromised.
Re:Dutch Ethical Hacker Logs into Trump’s Twitter Account on Thursday October 22, 2020 @10:41AM (#24858499)
I think it’s hilarious Trump’s account was compromised but calling a nerd who steals accounts an ethical hacker is like calling someone who steals elections an ethical president. Hope they lock him up. Both of ‘em.

Haven't read the article but I did a rhythm game in elm for a game jam recently. It was much easier than I expected.
Re:Ask HN: Tips for Writing? on Monday October 12, 2020 @06:35PM (#24760248)
Sleep on it: separate yourself from your writing by a full night's rest before revising

Get feedback: you don't know your writing expresses anything let alone anything it's meant to if you don't test it on people outside of your head (subtip: learn how to ask for feedback - there's an episode of the podcast Start With This [#3 or #4 iirc] that digs into this)

Try to delete half of what you wrote: half of what you wrote is probably trash, confusing, needlessly ornamental, and/or boring.

I suppose I am in fact more interested in robots checking the "I am not a racist" box than in racists checking the "I am not a robot" box

But idk if it solves anything because I've been lying to that "I am not a robot" box for years

How many users would see "this update disables canvas" and know what the consequences of that are?

Apple doesn't care that it disabled canvas. :/ Canvas is too cross-platform for mālī tastes.

Re:Show HN: When Will I Weigh? Weight Trajectory on Friday August 28, 2020 @05:23PM (#24310131)
Doesn't seem to work if your target weight is higher than your current weight
