Re:Thanks FedEx, This Is Why We Keep Getting Phished on Friday February 23, 2024 @07:19AM (#39479673)
It's even worse than that. Scammers are sending messages through booking.com, so you get a message from the hotel, in your booking.com inbox, with a link to a payment site that just makes a payment to the crooks. The root cause is either hotel employees installing session-stealing malware, either accidentally or by being part of the scam.

I've been using F3 to test new SD cards: https://github.com/AltraMayor/f3

I think it does practically the same thing as your method.

Re:I love my GPD Micro PC on Thursday August 18, 2022 @04:20PM (#32514398)
Doesn't seem that you can get these for 300 EUR anymore, or am I missing something obvious?
Hey, thanks for the post. I was going to migrate some of my mailboxes to Zoho (ones that mostly receive netflix receipts and junkmail), can you elaborate about lack of unicode support? I can't find anything with a cursory web search.
I don't think that was always the case. Recently I was googling my name and I found out I have bunch of Trello boards for various student projects that I completely forgot about (think "startups" but we've never gotten anywhere with them). I was surprised to see that. I don't think we deliberately made it public.
Oh, wow, this is exactly how I dream as well. I could never have expressed this, though! Thank you for that post.

I always wonder how "real" do dreams feel for people who dream lucidly, but then I realize that it wouldn't matter for me. The level of realism, details, the feelings - are irrelevant, since it would only be a memory, at no point in time I would ever be experiencing it. It would be just a faint, happy, memory of something that didn't happen.

Re:Keybase's mission is to make encryption mainstream on Wednesday September 27, 2017 @03:18PM (#15351320)
Sometimes, when Slack e-mails me that someone has mentioned me in a channel, and in the e-mail there is content of the message, I have a brief thought of "how do they know-... oh". I'm slowly getting used to e2e provided by various IMs, as well as encrypted at rest e-mail providers (personally I user Protonmail) - it's not something extraordinary anymore.
Re:Ask HN: How does an online game with AIs manage so many AIs? on Wednesday September 13, 2017 @03:54AM (#15236330)
Regarding (2), there are some MMORPGs that went with this approach, producing hilarious results, obviously - talk about cheat programs allowing players to teleport monsters around etc.

Re:Ask HN: Secure automated backup? on Wednesday May 17, 2017 @03:33PM (#14362032)
If you mean client performance in general, I never had problems with that, it's just the connection to the server overseas was not that great. I have my own dedicated server in Europe to which I have much faster connection.
Re:Ask HN: Secure automated backup? on Saturday May 13, 2017 @06:30AM (#14330257)
Crashplan worked well for me, sometimes I have to restore a file that I overwrite or that ends up being corrupted because of buggy (in-house) software and I never had any problems with that.

My main issue is that I went with free plan + my own server because transfers to their servers were really bad. But to supply your own storage, you have to install Crashplan on the server, which uses significant amount of RAM. So this rules out backuping to my NAS (not enough memory there, even though it's x86 and technically people ran Java on it).

The other issue is that file format is (AFAIK) closed, and also you an account and connection to Crashplan service, so I'm not completely sure that you really own the data. I didn't do much research here, though.

Re:Ask HN: Secure automated backup? on Saturday May 13, 2017 @03:40AM (#14329933)
Can you elaborate how Arq is buggy? I'm considering switching to Arq from Crashplan, because I supply my own storage for it anyway.
I have an invoice generation script that outputs html, and I unfortunately have to open it in Chrome and "print to pdf" manually. If you control styling, you can usually set it to look the way you want. Also browser HTML headers/footers can be disabled.

wkhtmltopdf output never looked quite right to me.

Re:Uber Driver Tip-Hustling Schemes on Thursday March 16, 2017 @01:59PM (#13887264)
Thank you, I've just realized how... different (to not say "awful"...) it is in US after reading more comments here.

To be honest sometimes I'm anxious when my bill ends up some number that's hard to tip from; but if I don't tip, nothing will happen.

Re:Uber Driver Tip-Hustling Schemes on Thursday March 16, 2017 @08:44AM (#13884524)
View on Europe on HN seems to be a little skewed. We have tipping here as well, maybe not to the same extent as in US, but it's definitely present. Even sandwich or coffee places would have "tip jar" where people would drop their change when they pay cash, but it's not required or even expected. It's not like there is no concept of tipping at all.

I wonder why this is getting downvotes. There is a lot of insight about the situation in the linked comment.
Re:Ask HN: What's your backup setup? on Tuesday February 21, 2017 @07:52AM (#13695065)
I'm using CrashPlan and I have recovered multiple files over past couple of years, that I either mistakenly deleted or overwritten. I haven't tried any full-scale restore, yet, though.

Also [1], which relies on watermarking audio of content, which then can be detected by hardware players and the playback can be stopped if it discovers that e.g. you play a BluRay rip from USB stick. It survives encoding with different codecs. I'm not sure if it has been cracked yet or not.

They also offer bare metal x86 servers at very affordable prices as well!

If anyone needs something like this, try Kimsufi (OVH brand) [1]. Atom based servers for as low as 5 eur/mo.

Re:The man who sold the world on credit cards on Saturday February 18, 2017 @10:34AM (#13675107)
I didn't know about the discounts when paying with CC.

A lot of shops here offer discounts when paying with cash. It violates rules of card processing companies - or rather, they would violate them to charge more for card transaction, so the stores would just say "3% discount on all purchases, unless paid by card".

Re:The man who sold the world on credit cards on Saturday February 18, 2017 @06:34AM (#13674466)
In Europe, it's much easier to get debit than credit. You get debit card for any bank account you own, and sometimes it will even be free of charge. Even for accounts in different currency than your local one. Functionally, it's not much different than credit - you can pay on the internet, pay in all the stores, use in ATM. Why bother with applying for credit card, then (for most people)?

It used to be different though, for example 10+ years ago I couldn't pay on the internet with my debit card, it had to be credit card - we called them "convex cards" because of the "raised" numbers on the card instead of just flat-printed card number.

Agreed 100%. Is there any browser extension to help with that? I can imagine it might be hard to do because `onscroll` may have legitimate uses. Maybe at least something that would disable known "smooth scrolling" JS libs.

Re:Looking for Work After 25 Years of Octave on Thursday February 09, 2017 @07:39AM (#13606482)
I think you will only need to provide additional verification for PayPal and you'll be good to go. They need to do it because of anti money laundering laws - at least here in Europe, but it's probably similar in US.
