Not to mention this was during covid when people mostly sat inside and likely didn't prioritize portability.
Re:iPhone Duo on Thursday September 10, 2026 @03:31PM (#49649092)
I can understand people want bigger phones. I just don't get why apple can't make smaller phones anymore, especially for a company that seems to advocate for accessiblity and inclusion. They can make different size tablets. They make different size laptops. Why not phones? It's all large or x-large. People point to the mini but it really didn't do that poorly. It also was released at a weird time right after a cheaper SE model and not to mention all during COVID lockdowns where fewer people would actually touch the phone.
They have no shortage of people wanting to work for them. Why bother taking on a 'difficult' person?
Re:Self-Hosting Still Pays on Tuesday December 01, 2020 @02:52PM (#25269093)
I think you're missing the benefits outside of scalability. There are a lot of native AWS services that help you to quickly prototype and build reliable solutions. A startup saves a lot of money (and time) by not needing to hire a whole devops team to manage various service clusters.
Re:Apple Silicon M1: A Developer's Perspective on Saturday November 28, 2020 @02:47PM (#25239944)
Yeah, maybe. It's still hard for me to envision giving up a 2014 and 2015 MBP. They both work flawlessly and don't compromise on any of the useful features, like having USB A ports, SD card slot, MagSafe, no touchbar, reasonably sized touchpad and so forth.
Re:Bluetooth Attack Can Steal a Tesla Model X in Minutes on Monday November 23, 2020 @10:25PM (#25194956)
Yep, and I also remember someone still managed to steal our car. Different times, different methods.
Re:iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro on Tuesday October 13, 2020 @04:28PM (#24769963)
The original SE actually had fantastic battery life. If I recall correctly, better than the larger flagship 6s at the time.
Re:The Final Airbus A380 Has Been Assembled on Wednesday September 23, 2020 @11:26PM (#24574954)
Sad. A380 flights were always the smoothest in my experience.
Re:Tesla's 'Full Self-Driving Capability' Falls Short of Its Name on Saturday September 05, 2020 @09:26PM (#24388228)
We have these accidents and pileups constantly without involvement of assisted driving technology. By your logic we should disallow anything that could ever hurt anybody.
I can't relate to this problem either. At 5pm the work computer is turned off. No work apps on my phone. I think people just lack hobbies outside of work so they have nothing better to do than work.
When you don't have to work you're probably more likely to be in a place where you enjoy it. Having said that, I wonder how much work these guys do once they're in these roles and have already proving themselves time and time again. I imagine most of the less satisfying work is delegated away and they get to spend time on whatever they want.

This isn't really anything new that Google isn't aware of.
Re:Habits of High-Functioning Teams on Sunday May 24, 2020 @03:09PM (#23293819)
I would say losing your job is at the extreme end. There are many ways it could have impacted you without you even knowing. Obvious ones are missing out on promotions, getting a lower raise, bonus, etc. I think it's incredibly naive to think there would be no impact.
Re:Twitter Will Allow Employees to Work at Home Forever on Tuesday May 12, 2020 @03:52PM (#23158871)
Lots of companies are followers. I appreciate Twitter taking the lead here.
Re:New iPhone SE on Wednesday April 15, 2020 @10:18PM (#22885423)
> In fairness, 4.7 inches is now a very small phone. So small in fact that you have basically no options that small in the Android line, and no recent iPhones that small either, if I'm not mistaken.

You have to look at the physical dimensions though. A 4.7 display edge-to-edge would be truly compact, but this one has a huge bezel so it's closer in size to the flagships and not really compact.

Re:New iPhone SE on Wednesday April 15, 2020 @10:09PM (#22885378)
It's obviously a profit motive. They can charge more and have to spend less on R&D since they don't have to try to squeeze all the hardware into a small form factor. Not to mention there is no competition that could eat into their marketshare since nobody is making small phones.
Re:What's Next for Scala on Saturday April 11, 2020 @01:57PM (#22843026)
Well put. I had to use Scala for a little and I wasn't a fan. It's maybe a fun language to play around with for a pet project, but for a reliable production system I would never pick it.

The language is too flexible with too many ways to do the same thing, increasing cognitive load and making things difficult to understand. Maybe you can limit that in your own projects, but what if you have to look at a library codebase that's structured completely differently. Trying to understand that can take a lot of time.

Also there is the problem with hiring. Maybe your current team can work well with Scala, but what if a key member leaves or a service gets transferred. Hiring for Scala turned out to be impossible, so you get all these people that need to learn Scala first. Normally that may be ok, but Scala has a pretty steep learning curve so it takes a lot longer to onboard people.

Other than being open source, what does Bitwarden offer over Lastpass on the free tier?
Re:New MacBook Air on Wednesday March 18, 2020 @09:05PM (#22623288)
The nice thing about this one is the lack of the touch bar.
Did you just rent places for an extended period and work there? Sounds amazing.
Re:Apple Reports Declining Profits and Slowing Growth Again on Wednesday July 31, 2019 @12:38AM (#20571741)
Same here. If they make a better 2015 MBP I will upgrade my company computer, which will probably be $3500+.

If they make a one-handed iPhone again, they will also get money from me.

For now, I'm sticking with the 2015 MBP and the SE.

Keep going.

- Fix keyboard [check]

- Remove touchbar (or keep touchbar but also add back original function keys)

- Add MagSafe

- Add useful ports (USB-A, SD, HDMI)

- Add sufficient cooling

- Shrink touchpad to 2015 size

In other words, add TouchID to 2015 model, add some USB-C ports and upgrade internals.

It's pretty astonishing how a company like this can go backwards in so many ways.

Re:Pixel 3a on Wednesday May 08, 2019 @02:45AM (#19856439)
The timing is a bit odd. Why would you buy the Pixel 3a over a mint Pixel 3, which is about the same price (maybe even cheaper when adding taxes).
Re:Apple iPhone SE Available on Apple Store Again on Monday March 25, 2019 @02:18AM (#19480638)
But it is significantly larger, and it is also significantly heavier (weighs 50% more). The weight aspect is often ignored, but I found it very noticeable when I tried the XS. https://www.phonearena.com/phones/size/Apple-iPhone-SE,Apple...
Re:The Apple iPhone XR Review on Wednesday February 06, 2019 @01:41AM (#19093196)
I'm still using the SE because I don't want a big phone. Kudos to Apple for making a quality technical device that's around 4 years old now but still quite capable. However, shame on them for not making a flagship 'mini' phone.
They are working on the stuff they are assigned to. If you need to know exactly what they do each minute of the day you could ask them directly. If there are cards they shouldn’t work, then find a better way to prioritize cards that engineers can pick up. Don’t waste other people’s time.

I also think that stand ups are a terrible idea. It feels like extreme micromanagement. With everyone using slack it’s silly to wait a day for this specific meeting to say what they’re blocked on or raise other issues.

Re:Why I'm Ditching Android on Sunday November 04, 2018 @12:14AM (#18374181)
That doesn't change the fact that the hardware is 3-4 years old. The SE has nothing that's newer than the 6S which launched in fall of 2015. It also has some components that are from the 6 era, so fall 2014. Like I said, it's still a capable phone (I've had the SE since release).
Re:Why I'm Ditching Android on Saturday November 03, 2018 @02:59PM (#18371862)
It's still a capable phone, but keep in mind the hardware is between 3 and 4 years old at this point.
Re:Why I'm Ditching Android on Saturday November 03, 2018 @02:21PM (#18371659)
I did the same ~4 years ago, but it's not really a reason anymore. Apple no longer makes reasonably sized phones, they stopped doing that since the 5s. The SE was a nice surprise at the time (I still use it) but it was always considered a budget phone.

How do you conclude that it 'works great' for your company?
