An alternative POV is that somebody (USA?) does not trust Europe/Germany/... to not "relapse" to the "gas needle" when the things get dire.
But there's another aspect of this war -- information war. And it's being fought right now everywhere. While you argue against any censorships, Russia bans/jails/fines/kills EVERYTHING that doesn't strictly follow official party guidelines.
1. Russia bans everything that they don't 100% control: Facebook, Twitter, Instagram. Heck, Meta is now officially an "extremist organization". I'm not even talking about other large media outlets -- all banned, latest example I've heard is German DW.
2. You're in Russia you are not allowed to call this a war, because official position that this is a "special operation". People do get fined for this.
3. They fined a guy with a sign "Фашизм не пройдеш" (== "no to fascism", but literal translation would be "Fascism will not pass"). Courts ruled this to be "discrediting of the Russian Army". People are constantly jailed/fined for "no to war" signs and for their posts on VK (Russian clone of FB). Even high profile people are censoring themselves online. Even high profile people (Yevgeny Roizman) are being investigated for a simple "like" in a social media.
4. There are pro-war rallies. Regular people are beaten up and harassed for "no to war".
5. Whether you like it or not, but Z became Russia's swastika. Main TV channels openly support it and openly discuss plans about turning western world into ashes. Prime time TV openly discusses the war plans and how those shouldn't stop with Ukraine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgcP30dIIqw main propagandist (Solovyev) openly says "with sanctions like those why do we have to stop [at Ukraine]?" and "seven troubles -- one answer -- all world to ashes", which paraphrased means that they have a universal answer to any trouble: nuclear bomb ("all world to ashes"). Or another openly discussed plan how would they conquer Europe: https://www.unian.net/russianworld/u-soloveva-obsuzhdayut-ok... Or another one: https://twitter.com/carlbildt/status/1506315902169534464
7. Putin's rhetoric resemble's Hitler's to an uncanny degree. "National traitors", "solution to the ukrainian question", etc.
8. https://t.me/nexta_live/20770 yep, it's exactly what it looks like.
9. They terrorize anyone with at least a bit of opposition. They threw a severed pig's head in a wig to the doorsteps of Alexey Venediktov apartment (chief editor of "Echo of Moscow" radio station (recently banned, of course)). Oh, and Ukrainian emblem with "Judensau" (== "jewish pig", an anti-semitism thing). This is not a unique thing -- if you want, I'll give you a couple more examples. But the main thing is that perpetrators could not be found.
So please, for your own sake, do not help those propagandists in any way, because they don't play by the same rules as you do.

This kinda explains why the first wave of Russian soldiers were naive enough to stop in the city and ask common people for directions to the city center.
I'm a lurker, sorry for that.

Thanks. I did finish Yandex's school of data science (2015-2018). I've been to Moscow in 2018 for their graduation ceremony.
Edit: My remark about me visiting Moscow is to demonstrate that I did not harbor any anti-Russia sentiments.
To be clear: the video is not mine. I simply uploaded it to youtube as an unlisted video to support my point. This original video was posted on Feb 28th to one of telegram channels I'm subbed to. The channel is https://t.me/wildwildhack which is a channel for "wild wild hack" hackathon organized by the reface.ai guys.
Unfortunately this is not so clear. I've never heard any numbers that would indicate that the explicit support is less than 50%. The most recent figure I've seen is 58%: https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2022/03/08/russia-publi... But when I visit Russian reddit (pikabu.ru and d3.ru) I am appalled by the fervent support of this war by the common people, subjectively it feels like 95+%.
To put it bluntly, I believe that the modern Russia is fascist. There are many definitions of fascism, but common themes seem to be:
1. Cult of personality. Putin. Enough said.
2. Powerful and continuing nationalism. Russia has updated their constitution to include article 68 which defines Russian language as "язык государствообразующего народа" that is "the language of state-forming people".
3. Identification of enemies as unifying force. Huge disdain for USA, EU, and NATO. Obama personally steals money from Russia's retirees, EU is being openly described as gayrope.
4. Rampant sexism ... I don't think this can be applied to Russia. In general women from ex-USSR states are pretty badass.
5. Controlled Mass Media. You got it.
6. Obsession with national security. Russia's rhetoric is like that of an abusive spouse: Ukraine forced us to preemptively attack, or otherwise they (Ukr) would have attacked us (Rus).
7. Religion and government intertwined. I'll pull you up a video of Russia's main priest (archbishop? patriarch) blessing this war: https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2022/03/07/russian-church-lea.... Also there are numerous videos of Russian priests blessing ICBMs: https://www.reddit.com/r/europe/comments/6b54ml/a_russian_or...
8. Fraudlent elections. You got it.
9. Rampant croynism and corruption. Yep.
10. Those guys even got their own swastika -- the Z letter. Displayed publicly and numerously.
Please let me know if you want me to elaborate on any of the above points and I'll gladly provide you with examples. I'd elaborate from the start, but there's an air raid siren and I have to run to the bomb shelter :(.
The video is not excellent, but the audio is pretty spot on, if you ask me.
Edit: re-worded the first sentence.
... I no longer buy this. The war is, unfortunately, very popular with ordinary Russians. And I hope you don't have any illusions that the citizens sincerely support their dear leader Putin.
I don't know what would convince you, but if you're American I will assume that you can't read Russian. So for an English source look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protests_against_the_2022_Russ... which is far from unbiased source, but it has a good list of references. So far the anti-war protests gathered barely a couple of thousand of people across the whole country. Even if you multiply those numbers times 10 (because people are afraid of police), and then by another factor of 10 (because official numbers may lie) you will still get a negligible number like 0.01% of the population.
At the same time Berlin alone has had 100k+ people on the streets.
But if you can read Russian, then just take a peek at pikabu.ru and d3.ru (which are like reddit in Russia) or any popular livejournal accounts. You will find too many anti-ukrainian sentiments describing us all as literal nazis [1].
Our soldiers are also finding smartphones of dead Russian soldiers and there has been quite a few photos of their communication back home ( https://i.imgur.com/1OZXgfw.jpeg https://i.imgur.com/oXUL2FJ.jpeg ). The first photo is his communication with his sister where she's asking about the war and "hohols" (derogatory term for Ukrainians), the second photo is his communication with his "beloved girlfriend" where the girlfriend asks to show no mercy to "them", "them" being hohols ... errr ... Ukrainians, I presume, because we, allegedly, would show no mercy to them; which is ironic because if you guys could just fuck off back home it would be really swell.
[1] calling Ukrainians nazis is a fucking bullshit -- our president is jewish, who got elected in an actual election by 73% of the country. Oh yeah, and the runner up candidate (ex-president) is also jewish. And yes, we, unlike Russia, did in fact have an actual elections. If Russians are so against nazis then why the fuck Russian PMC (private military corporation) Wagner is involved here (on the Russian side, of course) whose commander is this fucking asshole with an actual nazi insignia: https://newlinesmag.com/wp-content/uploads/utkin-tattoos.jpg ( from this article https://newlinesmag.com/reportage/the-wagner-group-files/ )?!
At this point I believe that Russia is pretty much North Korea -- their rulers have such a tight grip on their citizens that the citizens are now truly brainwashed into thinking that their dear leader is God incarnate and that the rest of the world is indeed out to get them.
I am Ukrainian living in Kyiv. On 24th of February I woke up from the sounds of rockets bombing the shit of my city. I've been a programmer since as long as I can remember myself, but now I'm making Molotov's to help repel the invaders because I'm now 100% sure that I will be "cleansed" on some trumped-up charges of being a nazi in case Russia does indeed take over Ukraine. And cleansed here means imprisoned or killed, and I'm not being dramatic here, this is the exact term used by Russia as one of their explicit stated goal of this so called "special operation". The best I can hope for is that I'll have few more years to live until I'll be used as a cannon fodder in some other bullshit war Russia starts.
This war is literally an existential threat to me. And from the looks of it, majority of Russians actually support it.
I've been lean 165lbs / 5'10" (75kg, 178cm) since 15 till like 21. I've had a sixpack, but nobody knew about it because I don't usually go to the high school and university shirtless. When I got to 187lbs (85kg) I actually started to look like I lift even when dressed. At 200-210lbs (90-95kg) I actually look strong even in sweater. At my height to get the grotesque "bodybuilding big" I'd have to weigh ~120kg (260lbs).
Getting big has had a dramatic positive effect on my attractiveness.

I've been working on my startup, but this doesn't seem to work out very well :/. Also used to work at Facebook and Google, if that interests anyone.
For a little context: my mother studied cybernetics and father studied electrical engineering in USSR in 70s. They still have their college textbooks lying around, so I can try to dig something up for you from that era. But keep in mind, even in 70s it was obvious that USSR was decades behind USA. Heck, my first algorithm textbook was my parents' 2nd edition of Knuth's TAOCP (interestingly, my parents combined have 1 copy of 1st volume, 0 copies of 2nd volume, and 2 copies of 3rd volume).
How many street shitters do you have? How many people do you have who are shooting heroin publicly on the train station? Starting with those sounds like a nobrainer to me.
> first adopt a contrived definition of what a "drug" is
Sure, my statement would be incorrect if you change the definition of words I'm choosing. But you very well know that in this context I've meant drugs that are defined by the UN as illegal: https://www.unodc.org/documents/scientific/Terminology_and_I...
Sorry, I don't understand how can you claim that drug prohibition doesn't work when you have countries where it in fact it does successfully work. Without resorting to redefining words, how do you explain Japan or Singapore? Is X prohibited in Japan? Yes. Is the prohibition enforced? Yes. How easy would it be to acquire X there? Very very hard. Did the prohibition work in this case? Yes. Substitute X with weed, LSD, or heroin, or your ILLEGAL drug of choice. If the prohibition can't possibly work, how do those academics explain that? Why is that prohibition of alcohol was successful in Kuwait? You'll probably argue with word "successful", but for the sake of argument lets count drunkards on the street or talk about drunk-driving related stats: there are effectively 0 of those. Do I agree with alcohol prohibition? Fuck no. Do I agree with drug prohibition? Fuck no too. Would prohibition always fail? No.
I haven't read the exact books you recommend, but I've read other books on this subject and frankly find their argument lacking. Way too often their authors cherry pick arguments.
One of the books on this topic was David Nutt's "Drugs Without the Hot Air". David Nutt is also proclaimed as world drug expert, but his book is riddled with huge amount of lies by omission. The one egregious example was him citing Kary Mullis (the Nobel laureate for inventing Polymerase Chain Reaction) saying that without LSD he couldn't have invented LSD. What Nutt forgets to mention is that Mullis is fucking lunatic who denies existence of AIDS, denies climate change, believes in astrology, sincerely describes his encounter with glowing green raccoon (The raccoon said: “Good evening, doctor.”). Like yo ... I'm not a doctor, but maybe this has something to do with copious amounts of LSD the guy consumed? If there is even a slight chance that Mullis' mental state was caused by the drugs maybe it was worth mentioning and not just cherry picking praise?
I was able to catch his lie just because I happened to known about Kary Mullis beforehand. So this example shows that David Nutt is, in fact, very biased (duh). What else did he lie about? Why should I trust him with his claims about something else?
Here's my response to the sibling comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19682651 It has more examples and may clarify my position a little better.
I am not against drugs, I have plenty of friends who are responsible users. I am not for death penalty (I think I know which comment you are referring to, that was a Devil's Advocate).
edit: as per wikipedia [1] there are ~7k homeless people living in San Francisco. As per the same article it is said that SF spends $241M on homeless people. This averages out to ~34.5k$/year ~= $2870/month. I will never believe that average homeless person is getting $2870 worth of goods and services per month. I'm saying that your homeless program is grossly inefficient. The same way as your drug war is an utter joke.

I wrote an exact same response to a sibling comment: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=19682651
Because you are not actually jailing people, duh. GP has written about 3 stalls being used by drug addicts at the same time! Where the fuck is police watching? Drugs are ridiculously easy to come by, hence why I believe the police isn't doing it's job.
> Do you think if we only arrested more drug users the war on drugs would finally be over?
Yes. Currently USA is doing absolute jack shit and wondering why the war on drugs is being lost. It seems that everyone but the police knows about dozen of celebrities who are doing drugs on an industrial scale. There are people whose identity and fame are revolving around drugs, for example Snoop Dogg, why the fuck he's not in jail already? The guy was smoking lifetime sentence worth weed per week way before it was decriminalized. I'm not going to believe that you guys are actually having war on drugs until you actually start jailing high profile public drug users.
Strict and actual enforcement of drug laws works. Period. Singapore and Japan are effectively drug free. Off top of my head more recent examples are Georgia (the country) and Davao city, which have eradicated rampant drug use in matter of years.
For the record: I have absolutely nothing against the drugs and am 100% for legalizing majority of drugs. But I'm very against saying that US is actually doing something about the drugs -- it's like hearing a fat kid who is eating a cake right fucking now claiming that he's on a diet and has been dieting for a long while and the fact that he is still fat proves that diets don't work.
edit: to be fair -- this may be an act to lure in regular people who may think they have a chance against a tweaker. They don't. Those guys are crazy good.
Yo guys, I know this may sound crazy to you, but have you thought about imprisoning those junkies? If you're so humane, maybe give them treatment AFTER you take them off the streets? While you're at it, might as well get the name of their supplier and imprison him too -- doesn't sound like a rocket science to me.
I don't buy that police is doing a good job right now -- I've been living in NYC in 2011-2015 and for whole 3.5 years every Friday and Saturday there was a guy standing at the intersection outside my work at 15th & 9th peddling coke and molly (the guy was standing there, sometimes walking crosswalks and saying out loud "coke, molly, weed"; not yelling, but loud enough that passerby's could hear him).
I'm not saying that RSI doesn't exist, but I'm now positive that in my case all those RSI-like symptoms were all in my head -- some kind of a nocebo (an anti-placebo) effect. When I was 27 I had to do an MRI of my hand for an unrelated reason (boxing injury), so naturally I asked them to do an MRI of my wrist since they'll be immobilizing my hand anyway [1]. So either my wrist was healed in those 6 years, or it was fine all along -- can't tell because I didn't have a "before" picture. Just in case, I explicitly double checked with another doctor if he was sure about my wrist and he said that my MRI could be used as a textbook example of a healthy wrist joint.
I am now wondering if all those "mental-health awareness" things could have an adverse effect. I wonder how many hypochondriacs self-suggested themselves an OCD or an ADHD, and while marinating in those thoughts they somehow turned those thoughts into an actual condition (self-fulfilling prophecy?). Like ... you guys already have tidy people joking about having an OCD, and people who like to wash hands are joking about being a germaphobs.
edit: I think I've seen an article "willpower is limited only if you believe so" posted somewhere here on HN, but I can't find it now. Anyway here's another link: [3], and here's the Stanford study they cite [4]. This can be another example of people self-suggesting themselves a handicap.
[1] There are a lot of posts on HN talking about healthcare costs in the US, so I'll share my anecdote too. I did an MRI in Ukraine and the whole thing was like $80: $50 for the hand and extra $30 for the wrist. The machine was 1.5 Tesla one, but there are other clinics that have 3 Tesla machines too (a little bit more expensive). Scheduling an appointment was done by a phone a couple of days in advance and didn't require any doctor referral. There are many small private clinics offering imaging services (MRI/CT/Ultrasound/...), and all of them are very easy to Google and all of the prices are available online, for example: [2]. After the procedure they give you a CD with the info, a print-out on some largish transparent plastic, and their staff doctor's conclusion. You usually take those results to your specialist doctor of choice.
[2] For example: https://translate.google.com/translate?sl=auto&tl=en&u=https... all prices in UAH, to get rough USD estimate divide those numbers by 25 (or 26.75 to get exact number as of 2019-03-13 if you're OCD).

8 years ago I bought random New Balance shoes for $65 (New Balance, model MT573 -- just looked up an exact email from Zappos). I've been using them exclusively as my only "gym" shoes for 7 years: I've ran half-marathon in them 2 years ago, I did weightlifting, crossfit, and tennis in them. I regularly exercise 3+ times a week (sometimes more), so I'd estimate that I've logged 1000-1500 miles (~1500-2250km) in them. Sure, they are a little worn out by now, but they are absolutely good to go. And I'm 200-220lbs (~90-100kg).
But long time ago when I was running in high school I've had some other random cheap shoes [1] that I've used for 4+ years. During that time I've been running regularly 3-4 times a week for 10km @ ~40-45min. In warm season I was running in random cotton shorts and a random oversized cotton t-shirt. In cold season I (everyone) was wearing long johns under the track suit and this was it. My father grew up in Seberia doing cross country skiing in way harsher weather wearing something similar.
So yeah ... in my experience running as a hobby is ridiculously cheap.
[1] This was in early 2000s in Ukraine, everyone was poor here, so I'm pretty sure those shoes couldn't cost more than ~$20, which was still a lot for my family.
