I do hope for your optimistic scenario, but I do not expect it.
Yeah the stench of that is quite nauseating at times...
Ah yes someone always rolls out the false dilemma of "the only options are completely unregulated capitalism or completely top down command economy communism".

It'd be shorter with the same meaning if you'd just scream "traitorous commie!!!!1111"

Yeah like all those external pressures that have kept private mega corps from polluting, monopolizing, pervasively surveiling, brutally exploiting labor, and generating false "science" that maintains their dominance even in the face of huge global negative effects... Oh, wait...
So because you don't like this naming scheme no name should be allowed at all?
Talking about and analyzing the problem might lead to mitigating or even substantially fixing it, which would remove its usefulness as a rhetorical attack on attempts to solve social problems.
Yes, sadly this is an easy way for people to dishonestly claim to themselves and others that any attempt to solve problems (other than the "problem" of how to generate ever greater wealth disparity which somehow never gets included in this) is completely worthless
There is a trap here of saying "thus we shouldn't do anything about problems" rather than the more reasonable "we should be prepared to iterate on our efforts".

Exactly, it's going to turn out that it didn't work well but it will still get used harmfully.
Re:Wyze security incident update on Monday February 19, 2024 @08:15PM (#39436906)
Doing a "job action" like that because people have lost trust in your profession isn't going to restore that trust.

The only thing that will is to stop being trigger happy menaces to public safety.

This is going to turn out to be the new phrenology, completely flawed, but it won't stop phobic types from using it to "prove" their antisocial theories.
Re:Dark UX doesn't work in the long run on Sunday February 18, 2024 @07:01AM (#39418359)
Your positioning it as "entitlement" is gross. Expose yourself to "ads" that are intrusive and tracking you, deliberately deceptive to drive clicks, spread lies and bigotry because nobody curates the content, and sometimes malware vectors if you want, but it doesn't make you morally superior, it makes you stupid.

About the only thing he got right is the noise problem...
Re:Nextdoor's Heisensubscribe (and Other Dark Patterns) on Thursday February 15, 2024 @08:28PM (#39391895)
I grew up in it. I participated in it, until I got out into the world enough that I realized how wrong I was.

For this specific case, no of course I can't be sure, I don't know the specific neighbors.

Because they're racist and "crime" is a dog whistle for "existing while not white".

It's incredibly tiresome.

Re:Unicomp's "New" Model M Keyboard on Monday February 12, 2024 @09:16PM (#39353497)
My Unicomp model M is good and I appreciate it daily. Fit and finish are just a little cheaper than an original 1980s IBM (which I also had but it finally died) but it's USB and feels good to type on. I actually use the OS key so having that is a plus for me
I think both of you have points that are important parts of its success
Not saying they are the same, no, but you seem to think it is so different that it's impossible for NF to have a business model without stamping out bootlegging?

If so, they're done for, because it's not going to be possible to do that.

But I think providing a product that desirable and easy to view might work and they're just not doing it and blaming evil-doers for their own failure as a business.

I am glad you have never had to deal with a job search after being fired so someone can make the quarterly numbers that result in getting a bonus that is more than you will earn in a life time, but the rest of us recognize it as an unfair deprivation from the outset.

"Who else will do better, make only perfect decisions, such that no one else ever need touch or address the topic again?"

Nobody, of course, but complaining about "kids these days" is never going to stop being popular.

Yes, even the original link admits their "simple is better" solution is only better in limited use cases.

"Our software will be so much better quality if it won't do the things you're paying me to make it do" is a non-starter in the real world.

Re:Why Bloat Is Still Software's Biggest Vulnerability on Saturday February 10, 2024 @11:57PM (#39332756)
Once upon a time I had to track down a catastrophic performance failure (process that should have taken a few minutes couldn't finish in the THREE DAYS allotted to it as a maximum runtime) that turned out to be because it was using a hand-rolled "simple" JSON parser instead of just pulling in Newtonsoft.

Other park goers harassing you because they think you violated the rules and they think trying to deride you for it is a good idea.

See most "x while black" incidents.

When they don't need to work to survive, which is never in our system.
Tell that to the capitalists always protesting that there's no need for regulations
Look at the payoffs. The company's payoffs are those primarily of its C suite: bonuses paid based on short term results.

The unsanctioned archivists have the payoff of the enjoyment they get from preserving and sharing media they love, which has no built in time limit like the former.

Steam really did this for games for me and somehow hasn't stopped working for me yet. Maybe Netflix should ask themselves how Steam competes with bootlegs and what they might do like it.
But that gets in the way of making the little line on the graph go up every quarter which means top execs don't get as big of bonuses so shitty planes it is!
Good on the family for being clear minded enough to allow the experiment
