Why would the government care if you're left or right, as long as you are a faithful consumer.

  > he had finally started focusing on violent crime instead of, “quality of life” crime like shoplifting and vandalism.
Why not both?
Worked in New York.

  > this disregard for the English language is truly despicable. You ought to be ashamed.
I mean, you brought race into it and implied I would care more if it happened to a white woman. That is the textbook definition of race-baiting. Both of your examples knew they were pregnant and abused drugs that killed the fetus. And both happened before Roe was overturned. So is there a point you're trying to make somewhere?

  > Says who? Some prosecutor?
The law, which is written by legislators democratically elected by the populace of the area they serve. That's how democracy works. If you think giving meth or valium to a baby or a developing fetus is a woman's prerogative, then I'm not sure there is any point in this discussion.

  > If a man takes a Valium, he won't be charged with anything.
Neither will a woman. Now if she is breastfeeding or pregnant that is a different story because it is no longer just her consuming the drug. She is no longer just endangering herself at that point. If a man endangers a child he will be charged as well. And in fact men face far heavier sentences in the legal system than women do. [0]

  > From a strict evolutionary perspective I have doubts that a high IQ is useful anymore.
Well, lower IQ people are easier to control and manipulate so I suppose the government might be ok with that outcome.

Race-baiting aside, your example is also irrelevant as its from 2015 and again the result of using drugs that are harmful to a developing child. Again, if a man injures a woman through malice or carelessness, and induces a miscarriage he would be charged as well. This has always been the case.
Re:The Tyranny of Science over Mothers on Monday April 10, 2023 @09:08AM (#35511826)
She wasn't convicted for having a miscarriage, she was convicted for killing the fetus through repeated usage of meth while well into her pregnancy. It would be analogous to jailing a man for punching a pregnant woman in the stomach in order to induce an end to the pregnancy.

This also happened before the end of Roe and is only trotted out to scare people who don't bother to read the details. It has nothing to do with reproductive rights, and the fact that this example is always used is quite telling.

  > Tell the world you will stop development until alignment is figured out.
Oh alignment was figured out already, look at who is on the board of OpenAI and the connections they have to US intelligence.
So men read more non-fiction material and women read more fantasy-land material?
This is a tremendously naïve take on the situation.
Everybody knows it's safer to live in the country, but that's not the argument he's making. He's saying it's also safer to live in any other city. I don't know if it's a great methodology though, going per sq mile.
Talk about a bad faith argument. Nobody took away NY Times blue check except themselves when they refused to pay for the subscription like everyone else. Just like they won't let me view their articles without a subscription, so they should understand how that works as well as anybody.

A garment district holds no strategic value, so that wouldn't necessarily carry over to manufacturing.
Shady sourcing = the actual laptop and the contents which later proved to be 100% correct. Also, Zerohedge was banned for quite awhile for the same thing.

You want to increase depression, this is how you do it.

People need shit to do, and as much as we lie to ourselves that everyone is a budding artist who if only freed from the bounds of work would create the worlds next masterpiece - that is just not reality. Most people would actually sit around getting high/drunk, playing video games, watching porn and being miserable.

  > companies can potentially produce 10 times as many products/services
How exactly is that a good thing? We already consume too much, now we will have 10x as much to consume? Unlikely that demand for "the things" goes up 10x, which means the value will drop.
They banned NY Post for reporting on Hunter Biden's laptop and the contents showing "10% for the big guy" in reference to his father getting kickbacks on some shady Ukrainian and Chinese deals that Hunter facilitated.

  > despite the fact that their bill was basically Romneycare.
Romneycare was a plan built for one particular state, one of the main problems with the ACA was trying to replicate that state-based plan across 50 states that all have various systems.

  > Millions of innocent civilians in the middle east aren't as happy about it though.
So it's no different than it was before, so what's the problem?
I think most people against censorship are still against it. I just find it ironic that the people who supported censorship before are now up in arms.
I'm old enough to remember when we were told Twitter isn't the government so this isn't a free speech issue and if people don't like it they can build their own platform and blah blah blah..

Does that still hold now?

As we've heard millions of times before when the shoe was on the other foot, this is not a free speech issue. Even more so now that Twitter is a private company.
Someone else mentioned this, but there are a couple million government employees, a change in Administration doesn't really impact that in any meaningful way because the federal government is absolutely massive. NPR does have a bias towards the US-centric neoliberal order, regardless of which party is in power. In that sense, it is at least partially funded by government and parroting pro-US government messaging.

It's nowhere on the level of some countries but it's not exactly an independent media outlet and we shouldn't pretend it is.

Can you elaborate?

I disagree with this completely. I've been spanked a couple times by dang and it was warranted both times. And although I felt I was correct in what I posted, the tone wasn't right for this place, hence the warnings. That sort of thing is precisely why HN hasn't become Reddit-like.

  > I'm sure Trump's blatant attempts to do so as confirmed by several members of his own administration are particularly outrageous to you. Strange that you didn't mention it.
Yes, a bunch of Trump's dealings are outrageous to me. One of the many reasons I didn't vote for him, he's a con artist. That doesn't change anything with the shady dealings, coercion and outright bribery that Biden has been involved in as VP and now as President.
No, it was Biden using his coercive power to stop the prosecutor in Ukraine that was looking into the shady dealings of Biden's son on the Board of Burisma.
Re:Donald Trump Under Arrest on Tuesday April 04, 2023 @04:33PM (#35445517)
Bail is designed to ensure you show back up for proceedings, and to protect the community if you present a danger to others. If you don't present a danger to others and you aren't running anywhere, then personal recognizance makes sense. It's an imperfect system but the solution is to give personal recognizance bail to more people not fewer.
You didn't answer the question. We promised to give a billion dollars, then threatened to withhold it if they didn't do what we wanted. That is not a gift or a donation, that makes it a bribe. That was also a clear example of coercion - and it was done by our current President who was VP at the time.

I'm sure you were well aware of this and many other examples and yet you are on here pretending we don't use those tactics in Ukraine. Why?
