Stop using their user-hostile service? They need my eyeballs in order to sell me to advertisers. If they are creating features that turn users away, their bottom line may be impacted enough that they reevaluate their user-hostile business practices.

I can't tell if this is sarcasm or serious.

100 round barrels?
One could argue that we do have moderm day timelessness; single use plastics that will take a few thousand years to be destroyed.
No, but they aren't compensated nearly as well due to the market prices being "set" lower than what they can command in another market. i.e. practicing medicine in the U.S. commands a higher wage than in Canada so doctors leave the Canadian system after completing their residency. Hence, the shortage of supply caused by a market distorted by socialism.

TANSTAAFL

No I'm saying the supply is artificially constrained by the price of "free" so there is less incentive to go into medicine, hence shortages at the price demanded.
Economic incentives (or lack there of) under socialism. There's too much demand for the supply at the price established ("free").
HN'ers all agree ;) that modern day journalism is filled with hyperbole and unsubstantiated information.
> I think that the new User Interface that Facebook is rolling out will show whether or not Facebook has a real commitment to privacy.

How would you determine if the new user interface provided (or not) any [new or perceived] level of privacy?

> What is the trade-off for not being included by default in the main extension, CPU?

gorhill's (developer of uBO) explanation from[1] below:

> uBO-Extra is needed to deal with IL stuff because the IL inline script appears at the top of the served HTML page -- before any other secondary resource-pulling tag. uBO-Extra injects its content script declaratively, i.e. on every page, hence it will always run before IL stuff.

The root cause of why it is needed is because of a bug with web socket implementation in chrome.[2]

Additional info on why both are needed (& why for chrome but not firefox) in some reddit threads.[3][4][5]

Are you using chrome and also have either uBO-Extra or Nano Defender installed? If not it's most likely the ads are being served by Instart Logic. [1] [2]

You'll leave an orphaned article info table row with this approach but you can hide the article row itself with uBlock Origin procedural filters[1].

Add the following to 'My Filters':

news.ycombinator.com##table tr tr:has([href*="nytimes.com"])

This seems incorrect. They are more common than you think, especially in neighborhoods built within the last 30-40 years.

The OP complained about battery life and the $200 "disposable" headphones he bought a year ago, but happily bought the next iteration, hence my comment.

Fool me once...

Is it surprising that data that we provide and passes through Google's services are being mined?

News at 11.

Many may find this shocking or upsetting however I personally find Google Timeline[1] creepier than this set of data.

I see a lot of technical jargon but wondering how all of this relates and fits in with (if at all) the redesign?

Not sure if this is what you mean exactly, but uBlock Origin (as well as a lot of other Firefox extensions) can be installed[1] on Firefox for Android.[2]

Glad you find it useful!

Personal anecdote: While developing & maintaining a list it can be difficult to know if others are finding it useful because once it is being used (if it is done properly and doesn't break sites), there should be almost no feedback from the user base because they may just think the web is working as it should be and don't realize why it is how it is.

And the saddest part of your entire comment is that no one will listen when the economic facts are obvious and stop the madness.

Does this surprise anyone who understands the level of psychological manipulation they deploy to create quick dopamine hits that create addicts out of users?
Just curious do you love in a "blue state"... Supporting the pensions of the gym teacher who retired at 55 drawing $100k+ for the rest of his/her life?

Re:11% of Americans don’t use the internet on Monday July 23, 2018 @11:58PM (#17598015)
Worry not my friend, for you are not alone.
This is a really insightful and intelligent comment, I have nothing great to add to your comment but wanted to pass along my praise.
Playing devil's advocate here (and I think like you) but you're in a minority group just by virtue of being on this site, the average end user that isn't you is really stupid about tech issues and wants "protection" (or some other self serving issue).

Thus, we get dumb laws by politicians so they can point to what they have done for the average user that has no understanding of how any of the internet works. The web of today for me has really just turned into a problem of critical mass. For example, Google Eternal September[1], early adopters (nerds) have been going through this problem on the internet for awhile, and I honestly feel like it's never going to get better for us.

C'est la vie.

[1] https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eternal_September

There is a LOT of nuance in every Supreme Court case and this author either doesn't understand it, or chooses not to; and both of those options are dangerous to helping the public better understand the reasoning behind any decision handed down by the Supreme Court.

> in their quest to utterly dominate the global political economy

> featuring Justice Neil Gorsuch rather than Judge Merrick Garland

> Supreme Court rulings like the lifeline given to the practice of gerrymandering, the endorsement of Trump’s Muslim travel ban, the gutting of public sector unions, and the defense of bakers who don’t want to serve gay people

To me, there is extremely biased (political) language throughout the entire piece.
