even more extreme slippery slope. you are like the one who say get rid of cars because they kill people.
i call dumb sh*ts dumb and what's the issue?

Did i say everythign is stupid? No. I only showed the part of the issues.

You went down the slippery slope went extreme.

That stupid "special" timezones in Canada messed up Microsoft (they got their issues for not keeping their record stragith).

This is what happens when a part of country does not follow. China is the other extreme. They got one stupid timezone, so one part of the country is dark AF, but then other side is daylight.

This all comes down to whoever is running the government.

US should also abolish stupid daylight savings, but northern politicians do not want while there is bipartisan agreement to make the savings time permenant.

I use it as default for WSL2, because it's a default
Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Monday November 02, 2026 @09:23AM (#50337218)
yw. don't learn from me. I am an asshole and chat like an asshole on HN.
Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:37AM (#50336021)
Any "buts" means a criticism as you are disagreeing.

Don't ever use "buts" as you sound like an ass IRL.

Disagree/criticise instead of not pretenting to do so. (kinda like ask, don't ask to ask)

Re:HackerTube: YouTube built from videos recommended by HN on Monday November 02, 2026 @07:35AM (#50336006)
The source of truth changes from the company to your own source.

For hackertube, the source changed from Google to HN.

Nothing lost, just the source of the truth moved.

Re:Restrooms along the Norwegian Scenic Routes on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:44AM (#50325105)
I don't think many Americans visiting Norway can fit into the bathroom there.

Bad accessibility, not just for the fatties but also elderlies.

Re:Jepsen: ParticleDB 1.1.4 on Saturday October 31, 2026 @02:09PM (#50318449)
Great to implement a DB just like human memory, unstable, and untrustworthy.
Re:I Hate Online Waiting Rooms on Saturday October 31, 2026 @01:09AM (#50313388)
Online queues just is to enforce backpressure in the downstream.

I never heard of "AirDosh" so if implementing the alternative mentione in the doc is worth their effort for ROI.

Not as customer forced but trade-off should be made based on their resource availability

Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:34PM (#50309082)
That's where my analogy breaks as all of them do.

My point is that @pluc comments suggests too specific and I wanted that his examples break down in different levels of expertise.

Nothing I mentioned deals with disposability of engineers.

Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:01PM (#50306783)
Agree up to certain levels but your examples are too specifc.

Understanding should come in different levels abstraction of what you are building, and managing.

There are different levels SREs, from beginner to say Fellow level.

Do you expect the Fellow level to understand nitty gritty details of each component his apps or services are interacting with and how each of them start? No. Especially when they have to deal with hundres or thousands of services each of them hosted by different teams, orgs, or different companies.

junior SREs, yeah probably got their hands dirty with those nitty gritty details you listed because they tend to deal with smaller or lower levels of components

So my point is, I agree withyour "Understanding" but not specific details as they differ per one's level of experience

I was promoting Google models (more like Google ecosystem) for what Google was doing with their models. Making it accessible to non-technical people (which is what I am doing).

e.g. NotebookLLM was one that got me interested in Google's ecosystem. It was easy to use and explain even to my parents.

Now, their models (and NoteBookLLM merging to Gemini, making it extremely hard for non-tech people and other stuff) release very slowly, their models lie their ass off, very politically skewed, etc.

Not to mention blocking API usage with subs.

I never use any google models for any agent work any more, in case they block me.

Started migrating gdrive, and gmail to other providers at this point after horror stories in HN, that they lost access to their gmails, etc.

gemini.google.com (Pro plan).

AGY never even update often, and only has gemini 3.8 flash (for Google model).

Doesn't mean jack without access to it.

I used to defend Google's models months ago, but switched to Luna for less intelligent models.

But with this bs of not making it even public, pushing off release of newer models late, I lost faith in Google.

Mine showed up after clearing cache for some reason.
Re:Gemini 4 Carbon on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @03:57PM (#50279998)
I do not agree.

As an example, Linux distros say, Ubuntu got its project "names" as well as SEMVERs. But people rarely use project names but uses versions.

You tell me, I use "Jammy Jellyfish". I will be like WTF dood. You tell me 22.04 LT (which is one I use), oh yeah, that's a good one.

Same thing here. companies can call whatever SOTA whatever they want. But in the end people will refer to them as just Gemini 4 or Ultr/Pro/Lite however people like to use.

Just leave it to company's discretion. Don't enforce anything. People will figure out how to call it.

---

And wtf, a peaseant?

I use your so-stupidly-called ultra/med/lite but in diff situations, and when I use lite that doesn't mean I am peasant, I am being sensible

Re:Emacs Turns 50 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @12:48PM (#50276621)
It was great to use during college years.

I regret ever using X/Emacs for 5 years with two reasons.

The biggest reason is, I have arthritis on my left pinky thanks to Emacs. Now I need to use an expensive ergo keyboards (thumb for ctrls)

The second reason being, vi is what I am forced to use for many linux default editors. I never learned it, and always look up google for commands.

(optionally, extending Emacs is pain as I never understood the point of lisp).

Re:Genie 4 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:19PM (#50262485)
The prompts build impressive clips.

I am more interested in how to make consistent "participants" and "environment" with multiple clips so they look like one longer clip.

Will that require same dev/coding harness and spec-kit-like engineering flow?

Like create a spec on how a movie will look like, feed contexts, create tasks so that multiple clips look congruent?

Re:Viral Polls Are Not Representative Polls on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @12:33PM (#50261713)
I am upvoting your comment for correcting my knowledge on CNN not doing their own polling.

Some I do not really agree, as reputable firms != trustworthy polls.

e.g. Check out Times magainzes "Best Inventions of the Year, John Termus" (https://time.com/collection/best-inventions/2026/apple-iphon...) wtf is that. Time magazine might be "reputable" but whatever they discuss is not trustworthy given Appl duo being crap.

Re:Viral Polls Are Not Representative Polls on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:38AM (#50260948)
All polls are flawed. Remember last US pres election polls by CNN? Completely wrong. Why? Because they surveyed mostly left-"learing" participants.

Right and supposedly middle (this doesn't exist) media does the same.

That means we gotta find the average as you suggested.

Side note

> Given that Musk has absolutely destroyed the Twitter API for academic use

Why bring up Musk, when you can simply say, "Twitter lowered Academic API rate limit because ...". You sound like you need someone to blame not professional and politically motivated (yes the post is about the political poll but this shows the "bias" and his supposed poll will be biased depending on how he gathered data).

Twitter would have the same way of generating metrics for the justification as you are trying to justify the flaw in the poll outcome.

Most likely the decision is based on their internal metrics/dashboard report

Re:AI promised less work. I've never worked more on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:32AM (#50260872)
Jevon's paradox is the first thing I thought of as well after reading the title.

and you put words outta my mouth with your comment.

You will be surprised when you check all other IVY league college research fund sources.
Re:Brown student maps the hidden global labor powering AI on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:06PM (#50249296)
You left out "choice" part. And you confused capitalism with colonialism.

If you did that on purpose, you brought up whataboutism.

- I aint playing your game diverting attention from my comment.

Re:Brown student maps the hidden global labor powering AI on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:44PM (#50246816)
I cringe with AI "colonialism".

The article states three reasons for doing so, but all of them are very cringe baity words.

Low paid workers are due to local economy government doing jack to improve their wages in the first place. In China, competition is high, thus low pay (with other reasons such as real estate crashes, etc)

Visualization makes sense but does not mean it's colonialism as colonialism requires forced intervention, and there is no such play here.

Cool project bad political motivated wordings in the post.

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @09:35AM (#50231426)
Even HN sucks so bad, I created my own CSS to use with Stylus plugin.

I don't want to spend even tiniest amount of time for CSS or spend few cents with AI for it either.

This is similar to badly designed sites make you click more than once to get a job done while once click is enough. (as It'd force me to style around his crappy site)

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @09:33AM (#50231410)
That site is for the bots, plain dumb texts everwhere without any regards to how humans read.

I see someone posted justification of his decisions for such crappy site but I do not agree and ...

had an exact same visceral reaction as if I checked "trypophobia" related pics.

Re:We should be more ambitious with the software we build on Sunday October 25, 2026 @09:32AM (#50231398)
ty. I understand his side though I do not agree in practice.
