Yeah, IMO Musk seriously overestimated the average person's tolerance for toxic and hateful political content.
Re:How the new Threads app is made

Yeah, Twitter is super big in Japan for mainstream teen and young adult users in the 18-25 city student/young professional demographic. Same with Instagram. Mastodon adjacent stuff like Misskey, Pawoo, and Mstdn got the reputation for being for hosting weird, niche, or pretty much illegal content, and nobody really understands the point of Fediverse.
Re:How the new Threads app is made
on Friday July 07, 2023 @07:17PM (#36639521)
Honestly I don't fuck with social media that much besides my private Instagram, but there's more to it than just viral marketing. It's a pretty smooth app that appeals to people like my 18-25-ish age that feels like Twitter has gotten super weird and toxic. The honeymoon effect won't last forever, but it has something that a lot of social media users are looking for.

I gotta say removing political/controversial topics isn't necessarily a bad thing. Just depends on your use case and stuff. Not every platform needs to be a free speech zone—right now it feels like a pretty chill space to share food pics and talk about inconsequential topics with friends.

Why's it gotta be about money? Sometimes it's interesting to follow what other people in the field are doing. I used to follow a ton of ML and compiler researchers on Twitter. Was a ton of interesting conversations around 2013-2015.

Ye you're probably right. I'm not against ads on principle, I just hope they do it in a way that isn't super obtrusive. I feel like they got a good thing going on with the initial hype cycle. This is like the first time Meta/Facebook has been seen as cool in like ten years.
Re:Meta could become even more dominant in social media with Threads
on Friday July 07, 2023 @02:25PM (#36636183)
Threads is pretty chill and has a couple things going for it: my Insta followers/friends are automatically imported, no ads so far, recommendation algorithm works reasonably well (although it keeps pushing up Shaq for some reason), and there are some nice posi meme-y vibes. People talking about cooking and travel and music—no weird politics or crypto scammer stuff on every comment. Hopefully it stays that way for longer.

It is funny that you mention that. I've been feeling increasingly self-conscious about my own writing on the internet now because that's how I naturally write and talk, so I wonder how many people in the future are going to think it's just another AI comment written by ChatGPT.

While late diagnosis of Stage III/IV CRC in young adults is tragic, both incidence and death rate of colon cancer has fallen in recent years in the U.S. as early detection (more colonoscopies) and proactive removal of pre-cancerous polyps has increased.
Re:CEO Jack Altman’s email to lattice employees
on Thursday January 12, 2023 @01:34PM (#34358271)
It's the CEO/leader's job to make these decisions and to course correct when he's made a mistake. Publicly admonishing himself is, at best, a pointless display of virtue signaling. He could write 10 pages groveling for forgiveness from his employees and the public, but people would complain about that too.
I suspect the overall CEO compensation package for a company the size and structure of Lattice is trivial compared to other expenses.
Re:New Dementia Prevention Method May Be Behavioral, Not Prescribed
on Sunday July 03, 2022 @08:58PM (#31972419)
Unfortunately, the past several years of clinical trials have shown the amyloid beta/tau protein prion hypothesis doesn't have legs quite yet. The field is littered with failed Alzheimer's trials. Given the cost and difficulty of clinical trials, it makes sense that researchers and public health experts would go for comparatively low hanging fruit.

This is a published journal article that took those covariates into account. Off-hand comments dismissing articles with a correlation vs. causation quip is so expected and tiresome, especially since you can make these comments without reading the actual article.
