Re:Why Are Colleges Giving Financial Aid to Rich Kids? on Friday August 21, 2026 @12:36PM (#49390587)
Meanwhile as a young man the financial aid system told me I was a dependent solely because I was under 24 (I paid my own bills, rent, worked and filed my taxes, and relied not at all on my parents, but hey) and that any aid would be calculated against the wealth of both myself and my family. My father isn’t exactly a wealthy man, but combining the wealth of late career man would have certainly made it seem like I was in some great economic position I was not.

> You’re going to have to figure out new things to care about, but you can do it, because you found it the first time!

I have found many interesting things to care about. The problem is they all lack a single quality that allowed me to succeed in the realm of computers and technology: accessibility.

Re:Micron announces $10B research hub in Boise on Friday August 21, 2026 @11:21AM (#49389498)
One negative thing I’ve heard about Boise and some other smaller western cities is that they have awful air quality due to the geography settling all the exhausts and particles in a sort of bowl. Not sure how bad this is in practice though.
Massie is kinda interesting. Because he’s a sort of libertarian who ran as a republican when the right was a bit more united

But it was a strange election. The “establishment” candidate was a no name who refused to do any debates. Rarely ever seem to say much, and when he did, it was mostly just empty parroting of Trumps agenda. Maybe that’s truly what that district wanted.

What was interesting was how Massie seemed slated to win until the very end. Suddenly at the last minute, all sorts of smear ads and all kinds of (honestly very mild) accusations of personal impropriety were being slung left and right and days before the election, polls swap showing Gallrein in the lead, a complete reversal from the months before. A man I’ve never heard speak anything that wasn’t just party lines or something about being a SEAL.

Now I understand that polling isn’t always accurate. But I’ve seen the same exact thing play out nearly the same way in other recent primaries. Feels fishy.

> I would write to my congress person rather than commit a crime and destroy someone's property.

Your congressman is having a nice steak dinner with representatives of the company while some poor staffer pastes the generic response in the letter sent back to you.

I’ve never been hit by a stoner because they were high

I’ve never been abandoned by a stoner because being high was more important than their children

I’ve never had a stoner so high and out their mind they reach for the most vile, demeaning ways of speaking to me

I’ve never looked into the eyes of loved one who was really high and not been able to recognize them as the person I know.m, but as a Mr Hyde sort of figure.

I’ve never watched family die from a lifetime of smoking weed.

I have experienced all the things with Alcholics.

Of course, you’re probably interested in something much more formal: https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-11660210

> From my bubble (we’re all in bubbles), it seems that the populist right are in bed with the technocrat authoritarians, e.g. the Vance-Thiel connection.

Interesting, in my bubble “populist” right refers more younger more paleo conservative types who feel betrayed by MAGA. Many of these people hate Thiel and Technocrats as much as my Marxist friends.

I’m gonna guess (and tell me if I’m wrong) the disconnect is that you may be referring to the Trump admin itself which is indeed in bed with Thiel types. Personally I don’t really bother considering them populist anymore. They seem to mostly be interested in enriching their little circle.

They have the warchest. They’ll buy the politicians. Look how the populist right has failed its primaries so hard.

A common thread I see when these types of topics come up too is that the high pay in many of these jobs (trades, policing, nursing, etc.) is dependent on working large amounts of overtime.

My most frustrating experience was barely lazing my way through calculus I could not care about only to be working on a personal project years later where I really wish I paid attention.

In the context of a 2020s internet discussion “schizophrenic” colloquial is well understood to simple any erratic, nonsensical, contradictory or psychotic. But I’m gonna go out on a limb and guess you aren’t very gifted socially. Does the naming non-sequitor make up for the bullying you received years ago?

Anyway, keep espousing your liberal bullshit that reality continues to disprove. You have no rights,’only privileges m. If you weren’t so damn autistic you would have been able to understand that from the start instead of relying on good old retard pedantry

Frankly, Shakespeare is one of the few things I enjoyed reading in school. It was classic American novels I couldn’t stand. I couldn’t tell you why, but getting through something even as simple as Tom Sawyer was such a chore for me.

> College really isn't that hard or complex. All that's required is you attend classes, study, and pass tests.

Sure that’s all that’s required. And simple people such as yourself may be content with that and see it as the end-all

But anyone with an avoids room temp IQ understands that the real value of a university education isn’t the classes. It’s the people, the opportunities to do things become

> online school, commuting, and part time school are all valid options that result in a college degree.

Again the fact that you think that exclusive value of university is a degree it’s quite showing. I’d even argue online education strips some of the more valuable parts of an education away. I wouldn’t recommend that to anyone but those looking for a quick conic status booster like through Nursing. Indeed better to save your money otherwise. I’d put my money down that you’re some sort of CRUD monkey.

Cool now give me classic job search back.
> what exactly would have to change in this relationship for you to not infantilize the consumer and put them on equal moral weighting as the merchant?

Lmao lolbertarians now steeping to blank slatism to defend their degeneracy.

> What stops the rest of humanity from turning data centers into a pile of ash?

A mix of other people who will defend them because it’s a way better and more stable economic deal than joining the starving masses and probably autonomous weapons systems that can kill large amounts of people quickly over a large area.

Of course not, but consider the size of the field if the “webdev” stuff goes away. Competition for the remaining positions in other domains become more competitive and you may find the floor rising faster than you can? Or you’ll find that weak, but cheap heuristics will throw you out with the chaff.

I can’t blame em, they seem to have lucked out and been around just at the right time.

I currently live in a smaller blown out rust belt shithole city. It used to be a fairly sized industrial center even through the decline of the region. I meet a lot of middle aged and older people here who will opine on about their father the chemist who invented some everyday, but notable item for [chemical conglomerate] in the 80s/90s. Some people here have established a fair bit a wealth for their family through their patents even.

Even here on HN I keep nothing commenters talking about their father the physicist or their mother the biologist. Nowadays those people seem to be struggling to figure out where if anywhere they can afford to start a family (or just giving up on the prospects)

> it would at least have enabled you to own a home one day. Maybe have kids. Shit.

ding ding ding. This is the real kicker. This is why it’s a waste of time to pursue. Want a PhD? A home? A family? Pick one or two. With the amount of time and effort it takes to achieve those these days, you won’t get to have them all. So you have to pick one. At 17/18 it’s easy to see the coming decade as longer than it really is, and opportunity cost will catch up to you quick.

Re:I spent twenty years becoming good at the wrong game on Thursday August 20, 2026 @10:36AM (#49375198)
One thing I always hated about university education is how it’s entirely designed nowadays as a sort of “coming of age experience” for teenagers coming out of high school.

I don’t have any higher education. I was stupid and arrogant and thought it would be a waste of time and money. However even if I did attend at 17/18, I almost certainly would have squandered it. I wouldn’t have been mature or aware enough to understand how and where to focus my time and energy in such a setting.

By about my mid-late 20s I felt like I had a better idea of what I could or could not get out of such an experience, but by that point I had a life and bills to pay and a job to attend to allow for any of that. There’s barely any time or money for education now. I’ve thought about trying to go back for the last decade, but it just becomes less realistic every year.

Is the insurgent left those dementia patients that screamed “blue no matter who” during the last presidential election where there was a sudden “replacement” candidate no one really cared for, but were willing to endorse republicans after someone said mean thing about their favorite violent dessert tribe?

Hah, made sense after I read family court. People turn into genuine lunatics in that place.

Schizophrenic nonsense. If said rights are inalienable, why do you need them to be protected. I could shoot you and “alienate” several of those rights with no effort whatsoever.

I’m not sure I was go quite as far. But there are certainly

Makes my life better: LLM chat subscription

Makes my life worse: “AI” features that don’t work replacing perfectly good non “AI” features (notably Google Maps and LinkedIn job board). I don’t want fuzzy AI filters, I want concrete filters that let me drill down and browse a result list.

Don’t worry, we’ll find the cure for autism.
