Re:Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @10:12AM (#49449583)
Hey I just wanna say, way to go, I loved your post. I like how you went on what I think is a good combination of DIY and paying people to do stuff. This is really relatable, I feel like most of the decisions in projects are deciding on what to focus on when.
I just want to take a minute and be grateful for getting the chance to live through the 90s again. I always felt a bit sorry for myself being a child through the og 90s. Now I feel like in a decade or so into the future I will look back and be happy I got to live in the naïve days of windows 95 again, as an adult this time. I really appreciate it.

I love this comment so much. It really feels like the big tech is losing the grip. In Rick and Morty, the way Rick is using tech to amuse himself always inspires me. I could only dream of doing anything related a few years back when I watched it. Yesterday I was reverse engineering a cheap but good label maker from AliExpress to write my own app printing labels the way I want them with the fonts and graphics I like with no cancer ads like on the official version. Maybe in a few years I could build a portal gun or turn myself into a pickle, who knows. Fun times!

Thank you so much for this gem, this sent me through the rabbit hole and I'm fascinated by the level of engineering in this book. I love how big complex systems are engineered. It feels like anything is possible when you have a solid plan and you keep improving it step by step. So inspiring.
It's quite ironic that an AI hallucinated magic mushrooms use.

I could only wish for low unnatural rumbles of cars. In 3rd world countries it's non stop horns and noisy motorbikes

Re:Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with? on Friday August 14, 2026 @10:49AM (#49299467)
I love how it sometimes has false a-ha moments and being "honest" about it, it feels so cringe. Then I recall it has no intelligence. It's a stochastic parrot. It's funny how people, like any other animal, that beetle of David Attenborough trying to reproduce with a brown bottle comes to mind, think that something is X just because it trips the right neurons.
Re:Why is Everyone in Tech so sad? on Saturday August 08, 2026 @06:45AM (#49220530)
I found it easier to use anc headphones with white noise. I'm waiting for the next 5 years to pass, then I could also have my glasses that block all kinds of abominations from my vision, as it became normal to put cancer video ads everywhere in the public space. The future looks really good imho!

What would he do if I would tell him to knock it off? Wouldn't he just yell at me making the situation worse than it was to begin with?
Do birds ask themselves if humans enjoy running in groups?

Tangibly related - stadelijk in Amsterdam has that exhibit in which you get to experience 90' schiphol, with the pa and the glowing signs. It's really good

Please don't get the military involved in this. We have enough bs wars already.
Re:Claude Is Down on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @05:01PM (#49103035)
No this whole thread is such a nice thing to happen. It's like the lights are out on your building and you're joking about it with your neighbors when you're all just waiting for it to come back. But on a gigantic scale.

I love how people can share moments even though they are not close to each other physically at all. Imagine the cats outside could somehow connect with the cats in the other side of the world. No other animals can do this. Maybe whales, it depends how you define connect.

We are just gifted to live in such times.

Wait, is this the honest take? I can't tell because you didn't explicitly said so

Re:How is the Bun Rewrite in Rust going? on Monday July 27, 2026 @05:13PM (#49075604)
Jarred thank you for doing the impossible over and over. Bun is such a fun thing to use after years of npm. Good luck with your quests! Have fun
Do we have a name for such irony, remove the "honestly price" makes it less honest about what it is
I was in the same boat as you until I needed to learn how to use it in my $dayjob. It was like discovering a new continent. I couldn't care less about it before, but the moment I realized it's a kind of cloud OS I was astounded by how this thing is genius. It's the kind of thing that gives you dopamine rushes when you use it. Something about how there is a solution to every problem you didn't know even mattered turns it into a magical perfect software. I just love it.

There is something special about complex systems that just-work(tm)

Let me stop you right here and give you the honest take — you're absolutely right.

This lingo infuriates me

Re:Ten Steps Towards Happiness (2015) on Wednesday July 22, 2026 @05:58AM (#49004251)
Steve Wozniak is a present that helps me keep this equation on the positive side every time I stumble upon something he said or done. This included. In an alternate universe the society values these kinds of people and not the bullies.
I harass the sea with my tiny boat and am called a pirate, you do it with a great fleet and are called a king.
This sends a clear message and it echoes the "you can't solve a societal problem with tech" comment from the other thread - there is a right way and a wrong way of breaking the law. It's not that you have to keep the law, you just need to break it in the way that the consequences can be contained.

I think it's just a matter of time until everyone learns this. And then it will be the end of the slowly dying liberal democracies.

Have used it for years as well, Plex is a piece of shit. I'm waiting for the day I'll have the time to migrate off this enshitified hostile dark "platform".
Re:Better and Cheaper Than IPTV on Sunday July 19, 2026 @01:56AM (#48965361)
You're absolutely right and let me be honest about the honest load-bearing smoking-gun you point at.
Why not both? In Prepbook[0] (shameless plug) we created a web app, then used it to make a native app. You can use whatever you want. I like both. The native app though gives an objectively better experience - you can set timers on the OS level, open recipes in the app using the OS native share menu, etc.

We worked hard so you don't have to vibe code your way to get the experience you prefer.

I have a coin that can tell you whether a program would halt or not. But it's not always right. I think it's a coin like you have? Still trying to figure out how to use it to prove that p=np.
Re:Show HN: Ant – A JavaScript Runtime and Ecosystem on Sunday July 12, 2026 @05:17AM (#48879622)
Honest question - does using claude code and steering it to type the code I want counts as hand-built? Like doing actual PRs, nit picking, basically treating it as a jr/product/typist while I'm the one making ALL the decisions? Reading every line and approving manually if it's a code that I would write?
Re:I think I have LLM burnout on Thursday July 09, 2026 @12:08AM (#48840878)
Ask random questions until you get enough sense of things to ask "the right" questions. Never stop asking questions. Use everything you can to get the answers and never settle for any answer no matter how good it sounds, doubt it and go back to step 1.
