Re:Emacs Turns 50 on Wednesday October 28, 2026 @09:49PM (#50283571)
recently our company swithed from cursor -> codex. but we only can use the cli or vscode pulgin. with a few hours, i come back to emacs + codex, and ask codex to do a little tweak. everything works perfect.

there is program called 'doctor' in emacs, it's a rules based 'AI', pretty dumb. and it's like 40 years old. 40 years later, people are still using the same editor, just with diffnert AI program.

this is the most elegant and beautiful software i have ever used. and i wish after a 100 years, people will still love it.

> I’m pretty sure they would be even worse without their democratic freedom to criticize their respective governments

in an ideal world, yes. but with geopolicts, no. Like i see tons of USA news claims china is interven USA election. or Russia. I would say the truth for these contries are much horriable than it looks.

can the people undone the bad things he did?
Does that means the us gov, not only the president, but also thr congress, speak for the people in USA, supoorts go with war with Iran, supoort the genocide in GAZA, support tariff on every country ,threatens Canada, Greenland... and ICE shooting people in the street?

Then i have no respect for the people in USA

i would say CCP is not the worst of them. but i do hope something better. and it would never be the shit thing like in USA or EU.
Everything you said is quite right. However, it is an overly generalized description that overlooks all kinds of details. I prefer details, because they reveal much more.

To take a simple example: China is currently carrying out its most severe anti-corruption campaign in decades. Five-Year Plans are still being executed, support for low-income groups is being passionately discussed across social media, and according to various reports, the government has already begun addressing disparities in the pension system.

I’m not denying anything you said. But you seem to overlook the fact that we live in a world where we are merely comparing degrees of dysfunction. The Chinese government is deeply flawed, and the US government is deeply flawed as well. So much so that those of us who use VPNs to scale the firewall are honestly tired of watching people on the outside indulge in the illusion of freedom without any desire for real change. People often fail to see that, fundamentally, both are societies controlled by privileged classes—the distinction between autocracy and democracy is far less meaningful than it appears. At least in China, most people aren't suffocated by rent, don't have to worry about mobs rioting, looting, or committing arson(ok i am talking what happening in France, i dont know whats wrong with these stupid people), and don't have to fear the ravages of drugs, walk safely in the night, enjoy comforatable public transport(the point is , if a country dont have this but have the freedom to make jokes of their leaders, i dont think most of us will move there). As for those dissatisfied with society, they can emigrate(i guess the number is clear, most people travel aboard and see the world will still lives in china), or they can use a VPN to explore the outside world and discover the truth for themselves. Likewise, outsiders can visit to see the real China.

As part of a generation raised to believe that America was a beacon of civilization—which is how the media educated us, even if the government didn't say so directly—watching the outside world turn into what it is today brings us just as much pain as it brings you. The Prism scandal happened, and yet no one learned a thing. ( i have to use gemini to translate as my writen english is not so good)

well i am chinese, we do cannot post Winnie the Pooh meme(with ugly xi image), the origin carton figure is fine.(we also have a show about it in shanghai disney i think)

what troubles me is why 'humor' is the most important thing? shouldn't be the action/output of the gov? i mean, you vote someone, he promise something, he cannot do it, he breaks the law, then nothing happens, you make fun of him. then after 4 yeras, you select another person. and go on. Biden didn't get punised for what he has not achieved. So will Trump.

how does that improve your life? how can people live like this? how is that 'democray'? its very hard for our people to understand.

our neighbor counties like Mongoel and Philippines, they have a system like USA, and the popeople can make fun of their leaders all the time, i can see that from reddit. but they basiclly live in a shit hole, with a small populartion and vast resources, and they are poor than average chinese. i never understand the deulusion of them.

Re:Lula wins election after final votes tallied on Monday October 26, 2026 @02:00AM (#50239686)
everything should be juged by the action/output, not by the identity. too bad most democracy counties is focus on the later.
but doesn't the transtion to EV will increase the demand also, in the future?
In 2026 saw a Japan news site report a thing in 2024..its so Japan. ok jokes aside:

All of this is actually bound to happen, and it is laid out clearly in China's Five-Year Plans. Industrial upgrading is something China is bound to do, and it is bound to succeed—a colossal nation built on Confucian moral values with science as its religion.

Of course, if we ask the classic "but at what cost," it's that wealth distribution in these emerging high-tech industries is deeply unequal. Being right in the middle of it, every day I see two extremes: some company is hiring AI interns for 5,000 yuan a day, or offering PhD graduates an annual salary of 1 million yuan! Yet at the same time, massive numbers of people are unemployed, and countless others are living on baseline minimum wages.

If China truly wants to become a socialist country, beyond technological progress, it must properly resolve the inequality issues brought about by the reform and opening-up.

I didn't even know Finland had a right-wing party. maybe to most people, the stereotype of Nordic countries like Finland is just high social welfare, left-wing, and freezing cold."
Re:Google is illegaly cutting forest to build data centers on Monday October 12, 2026 @04:15AM (#50053072)
sounds like china except the ukrine war part and the chinese compete part...

> downfall of Nokia

> highest unemployment rate in the EU

i guess it's a universal problem.

Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @12:24AM (#49904333)
I’ve recently been reading a book about the Ritz Hotel in Paris during World War II. It hinted that Simone de Beauvoir and Ernest Hemingway might have slept together. Is this true?
Re:Ask HN: What're You Reading? on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @12:18AM (#49904307)
<Red Star Over China> -> for the Communism side of china, why china choose this path.

<River Town: Two Years on the Yangtze> -> one of my fav all the time. a forigner teach in this small chinese city, and he write what he observes.

for more ancient chinese history:

<1587, A Year of No Significance: The Ming Dynasty in Decline> -> one of the most popular china's history book for these years. highly recommnded.

i read a lot but i doubt many of them has a non-chinese version. the above ones are the ones i can think of now.

also <The Search for Modern China> is highly recommmend, but i foget if i have read it or not.

oh also another book on how chinese characters are made, 《China: Empire of Living Symbols》。 writen by a Sweden author Cecilia Lindqvist. i love it very much

Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @10:17PM (#49903590)
i tried i feel its pretty nice. it looks like a vibe-coded product. but for a gov website, it's pretty good. in china, most of the gov website looks like it's from the 90s, not-easy to use. it do work, but they dont have the urge to keep up.
how about the oil from Venezuela?
Re:Musk, the Movie on Sunday September 27, 2026 @11:16PM (#49873182)

no, only the 'big rational ones', they think carefully.. that why Iran cannot have, and so as NK, but NK is a mistake because they(china,USA...) failed to prevent NK have it.

Re:Record-High 89% in U.S. Say Government Corruption Widespread on Saturday September 05, 2026 @03:42AM (#49574115)
Its not only the us people. It also change the pro-us or pro-west people's view from countries like china.

Before Trump, people still believe USA is a great country even with so many flaws. Its still has a good reputation.Trump changed everything. He is not a bad leader, he has thoughts, but he cannot implement them with caution. And he destroyed USA's reputation, maybe forever.

Its hard to imaginy the greatest democracy' country, the president is manipulate the stock market, publicly, humiliating his friends country, or vaseel state. When the pro-USA people in china talks how great the USA is and China shoud learn from it, the comments is no longer agree anymore, most of them are mocking.and thats what the younger generation will grow up with, the mindset is: yes china is not perfect, but its way better than the shit countries like USA.

You can see the change in the numbers of graduates return to china after college, its used to be low, not its near or >90%.

Re:What's New in Emacs 31.1? on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @10:32PM (#49443492)
glad it helps. but i dont know much about treesit, i just dont see any issues after configure it in my emacs. for example, when i first open golang code after re-configure, the messages shows:

Tree-sitter grammar for `go' is missing; install it? y

Cloning repository

Compiling library

Library installed to /Users/xxx/.emacs.d/tree-sitter/libtree-sitter-go.dylib

looks pretty good.

i dont know much about Scotland. maybe it's because in china unemplomynet is a huge thing, and if the job pays well, people would love to go. its like the gold rush in the USA, not the same profit level, but you can make money, it worth it, in these days(at least in china)
Re:Why some US restaurants are banning tips on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @06:41AM (#49431627)
who invent this shit?

+1 reason not to travel to USA

but since they have so many objection now. learn from china's approch? https://japantoday.com/category/tech/china-goes-rural-with-d... (from what i learned it should be build datacents far away -> attract people to work nearby, not the other way around)

even it cost more, but still better thant the current situation?
