Usually the APC UPS's with a network connection have a separate slot in card which has a network connection and an additional serial connection on it.
Re:Don't dry your iPhone in a bag of rice, says Apple on Thursday February 22, 2024 @04:05AM (#39464810)
I remember fixing a graphics card years ago in the oven. Stripped all the heatsink and other removable parts off it and baked it for 15 mins or so. It reflowed the solider joints nicely and worked for several years afterwards.
Re:How China Built BYD, Its Tesla Killer on Sunday February 18, 2024 @05:24PM (#39424107)
First thing I though when I saw this brand. 'Seal', 'Dolphin', 'Seagull'. They should have perhaps asked a agency to brand these cars a little better.
Re:A Custom Zigbee Doorbell on Thursday February 15, 2024 @05:54AM (#39381231)
I've got a similar setup with a SDR tuned to 433Mhz using rtl_433. Really useful as the range is massive and it picks up all kind of devices; temperature sensors, weather stations, tyre pressure sensors.
Yeah Zigbee routers need to be on all the time, if you turn them off, other devices will start to form connections with other mesh nodes and will fail unexpected when you flip the switch back on.
It's probably more that you don't want a corporation to dictate how you describe (brand) the sizes of a drink where we have near universal language for that purpose already.
Re:I Hacked a Train Toilet on Monday January 29, 2024 @04:24AM (#39174384)
There are other benefits to this too. With an electronic lock you can display the state of the toilet to other passengers on digital signage screens onboard the train. You could do this with physical locks but it would likely be more costly.
Re:WTF Ubiquiti on Wednesday January 24, 2024 @04:05AM (#39115242)
If you don't want to shell out for the pricey stuff, Aruba InstantOn and Meraki Go APs might be an option.
Re:Ask HN: Should I try to manufacture toasters? on Tuesday January 16, 2024 @07:04AM (#39012356)
Those are two sides of the same coin though. More durable machines (solid, thick components for example) will be heavier and in the example of a washing machine will require more energy to move. Washing machines have also become much cheaper than 40 years ago, making them more of a disposable item.
Re:Henry Kissinger Has Died on Thursday November 30, 2023 @04:18AM (#38471430)
It's entertainment podcast first and history second but the sources are always listed and it's usually pretty well researched.
I've not heard anything bad about Polestar (Volvo).
Re:Cisco Acquires Splunk on Thursday September 21, 2023 @09:30AM (#37597344)
> Cisco isn't exactly known for their software innovation in the upper stacks

I spend most of my day managing Meraki networks and some of that is seriously powerful and innovative.

Re:French regulators order Apple to halt sales of the iPhone 12 on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @04:31AM (#37493848)
The phone doesn't meet the regulations which means it can't be sold. Whether they're good regulations or not is another matter.
Realistically what are the alternatives to Microsoft 365 with the same level of functionality?
Re:Ask HN: Do you still use a hand held/desktop calculator? on Thursday August 03, 2023 @05:40AM (#36983506)
No, I just use Powershell as I usually have that open anyway.
Re:A surprisingly simple way to foil car thieves on Monday July 17, 2023 @12:56PM (#36760681)
Not in Europe.
Re:UK retail electricity prices hit -19p/kWh today on Sunday July 02, 2023 @04:08AM (#36559385)
You need to be on a tariff that tracks wholesale prices like the Octopus Agile one.
Re:UK retail electricity prices hit -19p/kWh today on Sunday July 02, 2023 @04:07AM (#36559375)
I can only speak for myself but I've rearranged a few household jobs to take advantage of the negative prices today. I'm not going to miss an opportunity to be paid to use energy.
Re:MS Teams Are Down on Wednesday June 28, 2023 @09:09AM (#36505889)
They are previewing a new version at the moment, it's quite a bit quicker and can switch between organisations very quickly too which was always a pain in the old version.
Pubs can be nice places to go to without needing to drink alcohol. In Britain there are some fantastic pub buildings and gardens.

Personally I meet many of my friends in pubs and the alcohol isn't a factor at all. We manage to have deep and meaningful conversations often.

File history in Windows is based on shadow copies (Snapshots) that run from the server at a scheduled point. The explorer client just accesses those snapshots.
Re:AWS us-east-1 down on Tuesday June 13, 2023 @04:28PM (#36316598)
And yet it's AWS that's down.
You do have to build very expensive transmission lines to transport that energy. In some places in the world it's simply not economically viable.
Re:I was rejected by Codecademy 3 times, so I built my own on Thursday June 08, 2023 @11:09AM (#36243130)
How do you know that you wouldn't have the same capabilities if you didn't do those things?
Re:BT will shed as many as 55,000 workers by 2030 on Thursday May 18, 2023 @11:53AM (#35989778)
The BT group run Openreach who most other UK ISPs will resell as their own connection. Customers switching to other providers won't harm them as much as you'd think.
Re:52% of UK gig workers are earning below minimum wage on Thursday May 11, 2023 @11:25AM (#35903522)
A lot of these ventures aren't profitable even while paying their employees a pittance.
Re:I Fixed a Parasitic Drain on My Car in 408 Days on Tuesday April 11, 2023 @06:39AM (#35523218)
We do this to ventilate it so that it doesn't steam up the inside of the microwave. Seems pretty sensible.
Re:Can you buy the same flight for less if you use a VPN? on Tuesday March 28, 2023 @04:38AM (#35337528)
>You can fly an airplane on non-fossil fuels.

Not at the scale of commercial airlines though and certainly not (yet) as cheaply.

I have Enterprise 11 on a non managed device and I can't really recognise many of the comments here. No news or pre-loaded spam apps. It's actually a pretty good experience.
Re:The ID.2all concept is an electric VW $25.000 on Thursday March 16, 2023 @05:11AM (#35179747)
More of a Polo than a Golf.
