“No, I never looked anything up” Ok Claude
Re:Show HN: A chess analyzer that runs in the browser on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @11:52PM (#49721904)
One suggestion, can you not pull the annotated game from lichess using their stockfish? It might save you a lot of time and double work
Re:The Nature of Dance on Monday September 14, 2026 @09:09AM (#49696245)
I’ve always felt so awkward and uncomfortable the whole time in these situations. It’s a huge shame because I’m very social orally :/
Re:The Nature of Dance on Monday September 14, 2026 @08:59AM (#49696095)
Why are there less leaders generally? That is not intuitive to me since it feels like men generally want to fill that role in any context. Are there just less male dancers?
Re:Fable 5.1 Solves the Cyphral Distich, a 370-year-old cipher on Monday September 14, 2026 @08:51AM (#49695996)
Yes, unfortunately. I have met people that love AI videos (my in-laws being the closest to my bubble) and defend them as enjoying creativity.

Many people with niche and nostalgic tastes loved that music AI that got sued to oblivion recently.

For the record, I revile both as well. But for every person eating salad, there’s someone subsisting on McDonalds.

Re:How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:46AM (#49625664)
P=NP is for when both AI shops decide they want to go bankrupt LOL
Re:How An AI math breakthrough ignited a controversy on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:44AM (#49625639)
I don’t know because I use Anthropic, but I would eat my hat if this was on by default.
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @12:23AM (#49620959)
Understood, so you have a virtual “home lock” on your phone that is actually a media unlock or whatever. Clever :) I also didn’t know HASS = home assistant
Re:Splash-free urinals (2025) on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @11:50AM (#49612104)
Sorry, they use A and B as controls. They are not good at preventing splash
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @06:15AM (#49608243)
Hello Mantis. Question: what do you do with the books? Is there kindle integration somehow?
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @06:13AM (#49608224)
What do you mean by door lock, where does the code show up?
Re:Jellyfin 12.0 on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @06:11AM (#49608207)
For people that don’t know, Infuse lets you use Jellyfin on Apple TV and it’s very helpful for day purpose

Direct link to the designs (c and d, with d being practical). Great paper honestly.

I don’t understand who the target audience of these ads is. For most people, including myself, this is like seeing an ad for “New and Improved Time Machine! (Untested)” or “Magic Beans - Indica”.
If this is a spam campaign, it’s not a very effective one. I think you’d do well to apply Hanlon’s Razor here
Re:Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Mythos 5.1 on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @09:09AM (#49535647)
Then it’s not a benchmark. I think his thesis is solid: if neither pelicans nor bicycles stick out, it follows that there isn’t special attention being given to them by the labs
Re:Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope on Saturday August 29, 2026 @01:53PM (#49491825)
The telescope will be used to film sensationalist TV about missing kids
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:06AM (#49464294)
Yes, please stay and improve your home country. Those countries have severe brain drain, I’m sure everyone can be happy (including me)
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @09:03AM (#49464240)
Do walk us through the spot checking path. Class warfare is hard to see, seeing your job go to a lower-paid foreign worker is not
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:56AM (#49464131)
The “lack of local talent” is a fallacy. It’s “lack of talent at the prices I want”. Some people don’t take kindly to having their “product” replaced by a 1/2 price aliexpress clone
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:51AM (#49464057)
Thailand explicitly requires you to leave the country. There are companies that specialize in bussing expats to nearby countries.
Re:U.S. State Department Pauses Immigrant Visa Applications on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:49AM (#49464022)
Importing people that will work for much less (and many times, much worse) is not a skill issue. Keep laughing til you are undercut fully
Theoretically, I’m with you, but that’s not the reality of anything anymore. Kids are barred from using AI for schoolwork yet they crank it all through Claude anyways. At least with children you can blame impulse control and lack of foresight. Juniors just get trained to do it through college
Re:Tell HN: PayPal Blocks GrapheneOS on Thursday August 27, 2026 @08:42AM (#49463911)
Ironically, I had to apply Hanlon’s Razor to the impolite tone of your post
Re:Building a backyard office, the build and cost breakdown on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @01:29PM (#49437573)
One could argue this will get at least 50% ROI if you’re forced to sell your home. It’s strictly illegal in most places to room someone in one of these, but I’m sure people do it all the time. It won’t go to waste.
Does he do any side projects? Where you can support him most is feed him some problems he can build a solution for. I think working through the pain points of building an end to end product and putting that on his resume will go far. I also would recommend he finds non-SWE jobs at companies for the time being too. I mentioned in another comment but I was a “solutions engineer” aka customer support. It was minimally technical and boring but it had plenty of time to upskill and move laterally.

I am a new father to a 3 month old son. I will be nudging him to be an electrician if he has no obvious career interests. Union, good pay, endless work and lots of opportunities to do your own thing. It’s scary to even consider what the job market will look like in 22 years.

I imagine the meta will be “build a micro saas product that’s marginally successful” for younger folks. It’s trivial to make a product but you learn a lot seeing what the AI does wrong.
I got my first dev job by moving laterally within a company from customer support. Helpdesk aka “Helldesk” was a common pipeline for people. I don’t think those jobs are easy to get either now.
We hired one junior out of maybe 10 hires. I don’t really know where to slot them in currently, as they lack the background knowledge of what is good or bad from AI. It’s a shame because years ago, I would have hired them and pointed them at a million small projects. Best of luck to your son. I wish I had advice
Edot, we have footage of you stealing a car at gunpoint, then you getting out and breakdancing while turning into an elephant. Any explanation or straight to jail?
