Re:LG washing machine sending 3.7GB of data a day on Monday January 15, 2024 @08:39AM (#39000824)
According to UniFi, my LG washer and dryer have each used 15.9MB in the last month. LG Dishwasher used 3.8MB. I keep all IOT devices like these on client-isolated WiFi on their own VLAN with a speed limit of 250Kbps. They don’t have access to all the bandwidth they can eat, so they can’t participate meaningfully in a DDOS attack when compromised. 250Kbps is enough for “laundry is done” and “grill is pre-heated” push notifications to squeak through.
Re:Ask HN: Why has no one replaced Ticketmaster? on Saturday October 21, 2023 @09:25AM (#37966626)
Ticketmasters is an excellent book about their history, some of which has been touched on in the comments here. https://www.audible.com/pd/B00B2S9K46
I like it. As someone who has interviewed over a thousand software engineers, I can tell you that even many “full stack” people couldn’t answer it satisfactorily. I quit asking “explain the difference between asymmetric and symmetric encryption” because so few could answer it correctly.

Re:Ask HN: How did ChatGPT4 blew your mind lately? on Sunday May 07, 2023 @07:57AM (#35850454)
When 4 perfectly followed a complex prompt that I had spent hours trying (unsuccessfully) to get 3.5-turbo to follow even somewhat acceptably. Both models continue to impress me with their ability to tell me how to tune my prompts to get better results more consistently.
It definitely can hurt. It comes up more than you might think. Some managers see it as a distraction, flight risk, potential time theft, etc.
Re:Ask HN: How to design database schema for usage based billing? on Thursday September 01, 2022 @12:29AM (#32672010)
Avoid building it if you can. Stripe is great. The last billing system I built had a similar schema to yours. As the business grew, we got bigger customers who hated that we just provided a balance due, which was a sum of all debits and credits and not actual invoices they could pay or submit to their finance team for payment. Wrangling recurring charges yourself will unnecessarily take years off of your life.
What about lockdown mode? I install minimal apps and I for one am excited to try this out. https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2022/07/apple-expands-commitm...
Re:Why is my Twitter account in a superposition state? on Friday August 12, 2022 @01:45AM (#32435058)
Unrelated, but it reminds me of 20+ years ago, I ended up with two Amazon accounts with the same email and two different passwords. The order histories were different. I emailed them, and they merged the smaller history into the bigger history. I have always wondered what kind of lousy schema allowed that to happen.
Re:Ask HN: How do you read HN? on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @08:50AM (#32317847)
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/octal-for-hacker-news/id130888... I have tried all of them and I dislike Octal the least. I finally bought it after years of switching between the app and web.
Early on, we obsessed over this—researching every odd-looking email. Being in regulatory compliance, we had no shortage of attorneys around us, so I asked our main one about it, and to my surprise, he’s like, let them in, let them pay. Let them focus on you while you focus on their customers.

At a minimum, you can tell potential customers that they are a paying customer when asked about them (that’s the best way for them to find out, you know).

At most, you have, in some cases, paid proof and audit logs of your competitor is spying on your product. Assuming your Ts and Cs are decent, wait until they grow or raise and drop a lawsuit or threat of one in their lap. Send a copy to their suitor. That will affect their raise or acquisition.

Disclaimer: I’m not a lawyer, I just spend a lot of time talking to them.

We’re hiring remotes. What stack and what time zone are you in?
