Re:Crowdstrike Outage Causing Widespread Issues on Friday July 19, 2024 @04:20AM (#41003401)
I'm guessing they were being treated over the phone as the systems went down. I've been through a similar situation, the person on the phone will give step by step instructions while waiting for an ambulance to arrive.

Sounds like with the systems being down the call would have been cut off which sounds horrible.

Re:Ice - open source bar manager for macOS on Friday June 07, 2024 @06:56AM (#40607360)
I had to install one of these tools recently because of the notch on newer macbooks, they hide icons that overflow and you never notice it. For a while I thought my apps were erroring and not opening properly.

You have to manage it yourself with one of these tools otherwise they are lost to the void in my experience.

Re:The Future of the Vim Project on Thursday August 10, 2023 @10:25AM (#37076558)
In the UK you can use something like this: https://www.deathnotificationservice.co.uk/

There are a few of these, one official one for notifying the government and a few private ones.

I imagine this services exists in other countries, if not then might an opportunity to create it.

Re:The Future of the Vim Project on Thursday August 10, 2023 @07:46AM (#37074894)
Had the same experience with my dad passing recently, we had access to everything because we know the passwords he uses and he was ok with sharing those with us.

Will definitely look into the 1password emergency kit, thanks for mentioning it. 2fa is the other big challenge after that.

Re:HDR QR Code on Monday June 19, 2023 @05:04AM (#36388874)
Cool, only ever seen HDR on a large screen and the brightness is not as striking as this.
Even that won't work because there are companies like Pushshift (I think it's pushshift anyway) that are constantly archiving comments, so they have the old comment and the overwritten one. I think you can request pushshift delete your data under GDPR so at least you can remove your data from there, but I believe they are not the only ones doing this.
Re:Reddit.com appears to be having an outage on Monday June 12, 2023 @11:05AM (#36294860)
Cloudflare is having issues and I noticed HN is going down for me (takes multiple reloads to work) so might not just be them.
Surprisingly my random scales off of Amazon do not do this. Accurate both times.
Re:Passkeys now support external providers on Tuesday June 06, 2023 @06:11AM (#36210533)
Is the whole idea of syncing passkeys a bad idea? Or at least a less secure idea. Someone explained to me that passkeys are hardware backed, each passkey is stored on device and tied to the hardware, so even if someone managed to get access to it, they would also need the hardware to get it to work. These software based keys that can be synced are less secure as a result. Then it just becomes like a password again.

I need to read up a bit more on passkeys in general tbh.

Re:How I wrote my own Smart Home software on Monday June 05, 2023 @07:47AM (#36194995)
I'm still a bit afraid of doing updates, I always tend to wait for the first minor/patch release before going for it. Things have changed in a big way since 2017 mind you, far more stable, and fewer breaking changes that affect the entire instance, usually it's specific to an integration. I've been running my system for 2 years now without issues. Any problems I do face are related to not understanding the configuration of something I'm setting up, or a cloud based integration introducing rate limes to their api.

There pretty good with announcing any big changes in their blog, here's the latest one: https://www.home-assistant.io/blog/2023/05/03/release-20235

Re:How I wrote my own Smart Home software on Monday June 05, 2023 @05:19AM (#36194112)
I feel like the initial learning of getting Home Assistant up and running is worth it over creating your own software. Especially in the long run. That and the other recommended way of setup that wasn't mentioned is to install the OS without messing with any containers. Pretty straight forward. Any problem you have there's probably a solution out there because the community is so large and that is worth it's weight in gold imo.

It used to be quite fragile but these days it's gotten a lot better. Still a lot of learning to do, someone with no experience in yaml or understanding under lying tech will struggle at first. They are pushing for UI setup for most things now so it's only a matter of time before it's far more accessible.

Re:What happened with Asus routers this morning? on Thursday May 18, 2023 @08:42AM (#35987079)
Is there any information on why this started happening in the last 2 days? Without any change to the firmware? Considering flashing asuswrt-merlin to avoid this in the future.
Been off work for a month-ish. Everything is as it was I see.
Re:First clean water, now clean air on Monday May 01, 2023 @10:46AM (#35773481)
Other than the obvious benefits like avoiding a pandemic this hits close to home. My dad passed away 2 weeks ago from Pulmanory Fibrosis. A respiratory disease without a cure and one where we know very little about the causes. Better air quality would drop cases, relive strain on the health system and just let people live longer. Its something I want to help with where I can. I hadn't even thought about the obvious step of raising awareness about air quality.
Re:Apple Passkey on Monday June 06, 2022 @02:41PM (#31644097)
They said in the event that everything is synced on iCloud so all your devices can use the keys, which makes me think no, it's just a password manager, without the password bit. Maybe they create a separate key for each device, but then why mention iCloud syncing at all.

Re:Michelin's airless tires are scheduled for market launch in 2024 on Wednesday September 15, 2021 @07:26AM (#28537726)
Looks like a complete pass through from one side to the other so washing them should remove most of that. Rocks might even fall out as the tyre rotates.

Yep they did exactly this and are now running on cloudfront

Terraform having issues and rubygems down too
Not necessarily, but only to companies that pose less of a security risk than Nvidia.

They said they're going to release material soon to justify their decision so we'll have to see what that all means.

Got to be a joke, there's no way..

Re:More big investors shun Deliveroo over workers' rights on Thursday March 25, 2021 @07:26AM (#26578885)
I don't think immediate profitability is a concern for Uber, investors are all in on future profits when/if they move to autonomous cars. The profitability is far greater then, rather than now.

I don't know how deliveroo future profits look in comparison.

Re:More big investors shun Deliveroo over workers' rights on Thursday March 25, 2021 @06:37AM (#26578501)
From an investors point of view the last thing you want is an Uber situation, where you have to classify all drivers as employees and take on a new massive cost. It's one of their biggest risks at the moment.

From a human point of view I hope that does happen.

They even admit it's a huge problem with their profitability plan: https://london.eater.com/2021/3/24/22347981/deliveroo-delive...

Re:Why is the UK so poor compared to the US? on Friday February 26, 2021 @06:52AM (#26273864)
How do you define poor? Spending power is more important.

The UK is a very cheap place to live. Yes there is a housing crisis, and fixing it will absolutely make citizens of London and the south east richer, but in terms of the rest of the country, it's not as crazy.

Ultimately I don't think you can compare how poor citizens of one country are to another unless you factor in disposable income, and spending power.
