Think of all the silicon that could be harvested from private beaches.

The vast majority of websites could be plain text, throw out the scripts.
I have several Blu-ray players from thrift stores. All they needed were cheap compatible remotes.
Re:Gen Z Is the First Generation Dumber Than Their Parents on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:54AM (#50141618)
Evidence based policies are something we need more of in general.
Re:Gen Z Is the First Generation Dumber Than Their Parents on Sunday October 18, 2026 @10:38AM (#50141502)
There are many things to point at and blame without evidence. Is it increased class sizes, or teachers having to move from teaching to managing classrooms, or lack of arithmetic skills built on rote learning of multiplication tables replaced with “methods”, or maybe, just maybe, it’s all the Teletubbies fault.

Don't worry, the next tvOS update may fix that.

It's gone from the store, replaced by a pre-order for the new one. Refurbished 3rd gen units are still available (for now).
You’d also get CEO optimization, getting them to talk about <buzzword> and how the entire company is now a <buzzword>-first business.
Like cigarettes, simply ban the advertising.

That also describes data centers ;)

Re:Software rendering in 500 lines of bare C++ on Thursday July 23, 2026 @08:54PM (#49030057)
In a fit of 90s nostalgia I’ve also been going back to software rendering, though I’m doing a hybrid of 2D style CLUT banks with a more modern binned triangle and barycentric technique. Since I’m sticking to a fixed pipeline look, I’ve been amazed at just how many triangles one can push even with a fairly naive draw function.
Ditto the ST equivalent STOS. Amiga owning friends preferred Blitz BASIC though. Unfortunately, due to one Dijkstra quote about it, people tend to be quite snobbish about BASIC.

Blue needs to be paler, and the dot smaller ;-)

“Designed in California, for Californians” was too long.
Re:Additive Blending on the Nintendo 64 on Saturday May 23, 2026 @12:39PM (#48249073)
Interesting. I was on PlayStation so I only heard about N64 dev at lunch. Factor5 were much closer to Nintendo than we were, and also known to be a bit good. Plus SDKs change over time. Take PS1 for example. We didn’t get GTE register details and inline functions initially, just libraries, and the more open it became the more we wrote in assembly.
They’re called off ramps for a reason right?
Re:Additive Blending on the Nintendo 64 on Saturday May 16, 2026 @11:54AM (#48161271)
Yes, 2nd party privileges.
Re:Additive Blending on the Nintendo 64 on Saturday May 16, 2026 @10:25AM (#48160538)
Probably more accurate to say the custom microcode tools were not given to third party developers. From what I remember, you had to list the microcode used on your submission form, and Nintendo checked for it in your ROM. Did some third parties make custom microcode? Highly probable, but I do not know how many were able to ship with it.
Why do they do it? To make money. How do they make money? Advertising. Designate them broadcasters and hold them to the same advertising standards.
Re:PC Engine CPU on Friday May 08, 2026 @03:59PM (#48067961)
Which, despite the VCR-like appearance, meant no faux wood detailing ;-)
I wish they’d bring back the original PlayStation logo though, not just on anniversary editions.

Their presumed lack of regression testing.
Re:The Death of Character in Game Console Interfaces on Thursday April 16, 2026 @11:51PM (#47802298)
For big games, it’s a legal thing. Ever since the Hot Coffee debacle, we are not allowed to hide content, all of which has to be approved by legal.
I have been in the situation of standing outside an after-hours pick-up only window at a McDonald’s in the UK, able to talk to the staff, but unable to order because they only accepted app orders and I only had access to the Canadian app.

Re:OpenAI is rolling out age prediction on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @03:26PM (#46697333)
How long before a phrase is found that causes a predicted birthdate of 1970/01/01 ?
I'd imagine that at most [e: of their] stores the loss from theft is less than that of spoiled goods.
Can PowerToys remap it?
