Fixing things that aren't broken. Changing things just because they can be changed. Sometimes boring and stagnant is good.
Re:They make USB-C cables with displays now on Sunday June 16, 2024 @11:32PM (#40702098)
This now has wifi in the elite version. I have one for research purposes.
When you own your own business you can easily make 6 figures, it just takes years of sweat equity and rough times. A friend of mine has grown his business from 100k/y in sales (and 5-10k profit) to millions per year (~300k profit) installing TVs and stereos in 13 years. He worked his ass off for a long time.
Do you recommend any specific external GPU? I had one from Black Magic, it was not that great performance wise.

Alaskan Airlines is notorious for taking maintenance shortcuts, this is likely not an inherent problem with the airframe but rather this operators SOP.

Alaskan Airline flight 261 is one example.

> The subsequent investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) determined that inadequate maintenance led to excessive wear and eventual failure of a critical flight control system during flight.

I get an error on https://drs-web.amazon.com/settings – has it been taken down? I also have a Brother printer, which I bought from Amazon.

SponsorBlock is a wonderful tool. I use uBlock origin and have not seen an ad for a long time, perhaps years with one or two exceptions.
Re:MGM losing up to $8.4M a day due to cyberattack, analyist says on Wednesday September 20, 2023 @12:06AM (#37580267)
You're mistaking compliance with a competent security program.
Security is a SG&A line item, I am sure they are far more fixated on physical security due to their business vertical and had a gap. There will be many cyber companies chomping at the bit to get a piece of the inevitable (I made this number up) 100m MGM will spend on Cybersecurity over the next 5 years.

They won't make the same mistake twice and will build a comprehensive cybersecurity program, and it will succeed. Up until someone questions this cost and they forgot what they are paying for because everything was so smooth and repeat the cycle.

The objective of security is risk identification and management, not creating an impervious barrier for potential adversaries.

You sacrifice privacy – societal norms change over time and what was once acceptable can no longer be.

I have a userscript that redirects shorts to watch?v=XXXXXX, the short video id is playable using the regular YT video player. Eliminates all the annoying UI features of shorts.
This varies by country for sure. At my current company, you do not have this right. The device and all data on it belongs to the company and they can do what they want with it.
> The only buffering people can get is by reaching C level positions. Director and above is good enough at most orgs, but of course VP is the level where you really start to enjoy privileges.

You can't get to those positions without speaking smoothly and spinning situations. Unless you are completely incompetent you can always find a way out, when given a chance to do so. Being given the chance is a result of how good you are at forging relationships.

If you ever get popped then your entire laptop is sent off for forensics, and if you delete personal data it will appear as if you were tampering with it and will get fired anyway.

Always use a separate machine for work, and another for personal.

This is the new era of tech. The chilling effect is real, and a grave concern. Threatening to get someone fired over information? Pathetic.

We are deeper than ever in an Abilene paradox.

Re:The FBI’s Contract to Buy Mass Internet Data on Monday March 27, 2023 @06:43PM (#35333838)
Ah yes, at my company many years ago we sold data to law enforcement when they didn't have a warrant but had a case someone really wanted to pursue. They were happy to pay quite high prices, and on a semi regular basis because we were a large "small business" that handled a lot of data.

We'd allow them to come in and image disks, span ports, modify software, you name it.

There is a huge left bias and you will actively be ousted from the FAANGs if you admit any conservative or $non_mainstream opinion. One place I know of – people wanted you dead if you were not vaccinated. It was pure hatred and this was ok with leadership.

Another place where we had significant reach to a large audience we actively curated anti-conservative content.

Because to survive in life you have to contribute to the survival of others. Anything else is selfish.
Re:Europe Makes Shipping Vessels Pay for Carbon Emissions on Friday December 02, 2022 @12:44PM (#33833862)
I couldn't disagree more. The response to corona decimated the economy and many businesses. The first priority for life on this planet is to have a decent quality of life. Not being able to afford food or other essentials is hardly a noble objective.
> 30 years old dishwasher, super hard water.

This is the real key, modern dishwashers have so many limitations in an attempt to reduce water and power usage they do an awful job. I wish there was more information on how to disable these features.

It's extremely sad that racism against white people is acceptable to so many.

Re:Why Is Tipping Everywhere You Checkout? on Thursday November 10, 2022 @12:08PM (#33549673)
Tipping incentivizes good service. When I travel to countries without tips I always have to chase down someone for service..
A old coworker boasted about abuse of stimulants and actively conversed with folks publicly about strategies to get your doctor to prescribe an increased dosage.

He was also very arrogant, pumped out features like no tomorrow but the code was always just barely functioning. Product loved him because he delivered but he left a wake of destruction for the security team to clean up.

Another person I worked with said he would never hire or work with someone who uses nicotine. It was even suggested that nicotine users "deserve" to be sabotaged and should not be employed.
