Re:13channel's Hacker News CTF on Tuesday January 02, 2024 @10:14PM (#38850249)
I'm a CTF addict. Fun to see a chan where anyone can make their own CTF. I'll try playing later tonight.

I hope people give this a chance - CTFs are a blast and it's neat to see someone made one where you have to use Hacker News.

Any other CTF players on HN? Itd be rad to play CTFs with another HNer

Hi, I'm Darigo! My background is full stack web development, although these days I mostly do application security and technical writing.

I'm a freelancer looking to transition to a full time role.

  Location: South America (from Texas)
  Remote: Yes
  Willing to relocate: No
Technologies: React, Node.js, Flask. Security tools (too many to even summarize lol). Python, C, asm, lots of other langs. If it has to do with the web, especially web security, it's in my wheelhouse :)
Résumé/CV: https://seisvelas.github.io/portfolio/ (this is a portfolio from a few years ago, I'm happy to tell you about things I've been working on more recently too)
  Email: [email protected]
I really, really love coding and am happy to code something over a call or show you things I'm working on. Also, if you have security or technical writing related work, even better.
What LLM are you using? I use ChatGPT and StableDiffusion semiregularly. Maybe I just suck at prompts, I find them very hit and miss, even for very simple tasks.
Every now and then it's helpful! I hate how it tends to "guess" for me, though. And it's not hard questions, it's exactly the kind of boilerplate it's supposed to be good at. I'll ask things like how to connect to the Amazon API in Python for some quick boilerplate, or about a built in library in Python, and it'll just make stuff up. I often have to yell at it to not make stuff up 1 or 2 times before it gives me "real" code.

If I'm doing something obscure or niche forget it, it'll just make up a bunch of nonsense. But I wish it was easier to get it to say "I think it should work like x but I'm not sure about y part" instead of just going all in and making stuff up.

We need to train it on old LessWrong posts so it learns about degrees of belief and such lol

Re:Ask HN: What imageboards do you use? on Friday December 29, 2023 @12:00PM (#38807214)
For anyone who doesn't know, the URLs for the boards OP posted are:

  sushigirl.us
  lainchan.org
  22chan.org
I personally highly recommend sushichan as well.
Re:Securing a GitHub repo is a ton of work on Friday October 21, 2022 @01:00AM (#33284691)
A significantly complex Github repo with CI, complex permissions, Git hooks all over, is pretty much its own software system that you have to manage, just like server management via Ansible or what-have-you.

Github does a great job at implementing sane defaults but I understand the author's point - there can be a lot to do and you usually don't know you're even supposed to worry about this until way later when security auditors file like 9001 reports about your repo settings.

I tried so hard to get "into" kotlin when I had to use it at a job. It's just kinda boring. Maybe that's a good thing, though.
I did technical work for an anarchist collective in NYC during Occupy. Also a fantastic experience, although lots of people who weren't part of the group were very hostile about me being in it, so that sucked.

I wonder if there are any coops out there that are making good money organizing with horizontal structures like this. I don't think a lot of people even try it, but it's pretty cool.
