News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

xacky

It's still using the same cables if you're not using fttp. Just that the phone is connected through the router first.
Re:I post trained a model on Demoscenes on Saturday October 31, 2026 @02:43PM (#50318783)
Demoscenes are a uniquely human endeavour.
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @09:07AM (#50288376)
If you have a dedicated IPv4 address, those behind NAT and CGNAT face significant throttling and false positive blocking. It's been made worse by scraper botnets.
Re:If IPv4 Were Land on Thursday October 29, 2026 @08:41AM (#50288015)
The fact that we have yet to fully deprecate IPv4 should be considered a great failure in the tech industry's competence.
Re:Please Let the Internet Die on Thursday October 29, 2026 @07:26AM (#50287327)
In another decade this headline would be "please let books die" or "please let tv die". Some people are biologically wired to process information in a maladaptive way (so much research about this), and the medium is irrelevant.

I say this that even simple text based sites like hacker news can be used inappropriately.

Re:Show HN: Encarta 95 Web on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @07:03AM (#50257289)
CD ROM encyclopedias were only really viable when dial up speeds limited the amount of multimedia content on the internet. Both Microsoft and Britannica were victims of internet encyclopedias. And now static internet based encyclopedias are themselves under threat of personalised AI content as well. The pursuit of knowledge keeps changing what knowledge itself looks like.
Backwards compatibility has limits. When a piece of software has been abandoned for 30 years, there is very little commercial value in supporting it. Apple, Google and even Linux are more aggressive in dropping support. It's only IBM on mainframes with multi million contracts that is really going for backwards compatibility at any cost.
Doing something that engages your brain in a unique way rewires your brain. I'm currently learning Astronomy and it is changing my thinking already. There are so many academic fields out there that each wires your brain in a unique way. We say were are in the age of AI but human intelligence needs to be studied even more than ever.
Re:Oldest GUI application that still runs on Windows 11 on Monday October 26, 2026 @03:01PM (#50249212)
There's probably an old X11 app from the 1980s that could be executed through xwayland somewhere.
It all started when people linked to lmgify instead of just giving the answer.
Re:Beyond the & on Thursday October 22, 2026 @08:22AM (#50194340)
We have Rust in the kernel now, of course the language that Linux uses is relevant.
Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @07:59AM (#50194154)
I remember having to buy GTA Liberty City Stories to jailbreak the PSP. Then there was the infamous Cubic Ninja jailbreak which caused the game to become worth hundreds of dollars.
Re:Jailbreaking the Switch 2 on Thursday October 22, 2026 @07:40AM (#50193991)
The Switch 2 jailbroken with the help of a Switch Flicker. Really funny.
A lot of software is going to be forced to update or retire soon, all unpatched software should be retired off the internet immediately because AI agents are in waiting.
Re:Mozilla shutting down Solo AI website creator on Friday October 02, 2026 @11:49AM (#49934873)
Mozilla will do anything but work through the decades old backlog on Bugzilla.
And Microsoft should counter by advertising physical media.
It's not real money, try and cash it out and you will get scammed.
Re:An Update on Wayback Machine Access on Tuesday September 15, 2026 @04:47PM (#49718698)
The anti virus industry needs to crack down on crawler and proxy malware, plus ISPs FINALLY need to replace CGNATs with iov6 to stop crawlers banning everyone behind a NAT.
Re:Claude is no longer available for minors on Friday September 11, 2026 @02:32PM (#49663090)
This will mean the next generation will grow up with open source AI. High schools and junior colleges offering computer courses will have to give their students different coding tools than the industry standard.
Re:I'm a Proud Luddite. That's Why I Use Linux on Friday September 11, 2026 @12:52PM (#49661530)
Most Linux distros update more than Windows, it's not a platform where technical progress is restricted. Even other Unix like systems still get lots of updates.
Re:Fine, I'll build my own text editor on Friday September 04, 2026 @08:13AM (#49563503)
It's always yet another yext editor instead of helping get people off Adobe's subscription trap.
Re:Yes, no (built-in) AI is now a feature – LibreOffice blog on Thursday September 03, 2026 @05:12PM (#49557092)
Document writing is for humans in their own words.
There are still boomers who think that BASIC from the 1960s made computing too easy, the gatekeepers will lose over a long enough time period.
Re:Twitter Viewer – View Twitter Without Account on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @12:32PM (#49451888)
You've been told for years not to use X, (twitter is now clearly the pre Musk era), but Elon knows you crave his dopamine so he can keep imposing harsher conditions.
Add ARM boot camp, MacOS is too restrictive compared to modern Linux. Asahi's devs can't keep up with the constant hardware releases so official support is important.
Will they add it to Firefox 115 for the remaining Windows 7/8 users or will you need a new operating system to add an image format?
Re:Ubuntu to soon have more WSL users than native Linux users on Saturday August 22, 2026 @09:58AM (#49399812)
Every home user moved away when snap happened.
Yet more features to increase ram usage and introduce security bugs.

Browsers are out of control, what can you really do that a 90s website can't apart from fingerprinting?

All they had to do was print some discs.
Re:Ramp Launches a Model Router on Friday August 21, 2026 @04:21AM (#49385306)
Once again a common word for an established technology, (network routers), has been hijacked by a techbro company. How's your NFT collection going.
