I’m sure this comment comes from a good place. I just want to say that cops escalate tensions in peaceful protests on the regular, when it fits their or their superiors narrative.

The playbook is always the same here in Germany: create a temporary limitation, like “ban use of umbrellas” or “don’t chant in arabic or irish” (both real things that happened at demos in Berlin). Then one of two things happen: either people comply, and cops create a new limitation. Or someone doesn’t comply and is violently arrested. Some people don’t like being beaten up, so they fight back. Now a peaceful protest turned into “violent police attacking thugs”.

„No” what specifically? :) You are not worried about surveillance?
You are using Meta glasses and worrying about surveillance? I don’t want to be mean, but if you run around with one of those, I would want to be alerted of _your_ presence..
Can you elaborate on why E2E encryption is not "appropriate for childrens' messaging"? Does this imply that we should be able to surveil what children say to each other, or..?
Did we live in two different “2006s”? I remember 2000s laptops to be near-unusable for anything 3D, let alone a 400 dollar one. My mid-2000s gaming PC could do it at 60-ish FPS, but the graphics in that alone were like 300 dollars :D

I’m just going to say your comment re: ping makes 0 sense to me. I sometimes leave ping running in the background for hours to find patterns in connectivity issues.

Re: your other comment. When my dad has problems with the internet, he will say the wifi is not working. And this isn’t incorrect, even if the source of the issue is not happening between the router and his device. Sure, the underlying issue may be something else. But by that logic putting anything but the final root cause in the title would be misleading or “real network engineers wouldn’t do that”, but I would argue that would just be bad storytelling..

Re:DeepSeek has 64% market share on Sunday September 27, 2026 @08:01AM (#49865929)
How do you know this? I know Claude et al gets the most publicity, but I have genuinely no idea what is used the most in absolute numbers.

(I’m referring to Europe mostly, I can believe it’s nowhere near 64% in the US)

Re:I said no and Apple said yes on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @11:20AM (#49802795)
-1 because why would someone who is annoyed with AI features in macOS migrate to Linux, where they would then be “forced” (in order to not waste their own time) to use agents to fix breaking OS-level functionality..
Re:I didn't sign the Fields medallists' letter on Thursday September 17, 2026 @05:41PM (#49746979)
This is such an insane take I don’t even know where to start. Even in the western world people increasingly need to work more than one job / have multiple incomes to live a life where basic necessities are given, and some luxuries are attainable (read: vacation, not rolex). That’s without children, in rich countries. That isn’t even touching on the problems someone e.g. from a lower caste in India might face. Asserting that „everyone with the intelligence to contribute to math“ would be able to just “find a job” that would them also contribute to the field is completely detached from reality.
Re:Apple announces changes for apps in the European Union on Wednesday August 19, 2026 @01:55AM (#49357427)
Do you mean “censorship by the EU” or “censorship within the EU”, or both? Because I see a lot of the latter, and I don’t find it inconsequential at all.
So if eg Trump said “evil Spain, we will never trade with them again, as they are terrorist-lovers” your only option is to just repeat that verbatim?

Or would you have the ability to say “in response to Spain denying US access to military bases and air space for Iran war, Trump retaliates with economic sanctions”?

If I think this is exactly what Ben Gvir is saying, and if I can make a sound argument to back that up, why would I not claim that he said exactly that? Is piercing through veiled bullshit that politicians say now frowned upon?

My point is that the Israeli government has been claiming, in every way imaginable, that their actions are „targeted“, when the evidence clearly shows that they are not. So when someone like Gvir says „targeted assassinations“, what he means (based on previous evidence) is „let’s kill some Palestinians“. What people say needs to be put in context of how they have behaved in the past.
My god how many „Israeli snipers are shooting children in the head“ statements from non-profits and doctors do we need before people finally stop peddling this „only evil hamas members are targeted“.. Just look at satellite pictures of Gaza man. Every palestinian is a target, which is why we are calling it genocide.
So this is not what he said [1]? What did he say, then. I’m assuming you must know.

Re:GIMP Development Update on Monday August 17, 2026 @06:13AM (#49328674)
I don’t see how this addresses my point that zipped XML gives you the same thing, but simpler. I understand that a GIMP file is many images, so that makes a zip feel like a great fit to me. The only advantage I see for using a full-blown DB is ensuring consistency with references, which admittedly is a plus. But beyond that, what do you gain?
Re:GIMP Development Update on Monday August 17, 2026 @04:12AM (#49327781)
In order to have any advantage from this, you would have the added complexity of splitting your file format into tables that can be queried in a useful manner. However, for an image file format, you most likely need to hold the entire definition in memory at all times anyway. Assuming that’s the case, doesn’t XPath get you there most of the way (assuming XML), with _way_ less complexity?
Re:GIMP Development Update on Monday August 17, 2026 @04:09AM (#49327767)
Thanks! I had the exact same question for various of these posts here. I know these may be different groups of people, but I always see people advocating for simplicity, and zipped-XML is as simple as it gets, needs barely any extra dependencies (none in GIMP I assume), and is proven to work well (Word etc).

I also don’t understand why SQLite would be preferable here, considering you will likely also store large binary files alongside your document definition.. What does a db engine give me here?

Re:Mistral OCR 4.1 on Thursday August 13, 2026 @02:47PM (#49290303)
You should put contact details in your profile :)
Let’s keep in mind that US corporations just received literal billions in tariff refunds, effectively stealing money from everyone who bought anything in the last year.

But i’m sure being charged an extra dollar at a small store that’s barely getting by (assuming this is true) is the real problem..

Why do we continue to spread this as if it was objective fact.. Didn’t the US government intelligence agencies themselves find that Iran is not building nukes? Aren’t they submitting to inspections by the IAEA, whereas Israel is not?
Yeah sure it was bad data, it’s great when you can blame a database or AI for crimes against humanity isn’t it? /s

And in a couple of decades this stuff gets declassified and everyone will say „oh no how atrocious“, but those responsible will most likely be dead by then.

Re:Islamist terrorist attack in Berlin Pride event on Sunday July 26, 2026 @11:44AM (#49059301)
There is an additional aspect to these statistics. Eg a guy set fire to a house last year in Germany, killing four people of turkish descent. They found plenty of nazi paraphernalia in his house, but it was concluded that there was no “right-wing extremist motivation”. So there is a big question of skewed statistics underpinning all of these discussions.
Who says anything about „this far in the future“? It’s enough for Anthropic et al to realize this one or two model versions ago, see it as a strategic advantage and push for that behavior.
Re:Claude Sonnet 5 on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @05:08AM (#48744127)
In my experience, even if the code is not worse, there is so much more of it that people quickly stop understanding what is going on. Now you could argue „the LLM knows“, but that comes at an insane token cost, even if it works well.

This is in the interest of big AI companies: if they quasi-monopolize the skills entire sectors of the economy need in order to function, that will be great (for them).

Everyone keeps comparing this to compilers, but I don’t need a multiple-hundred dollar subscription to use LLVM. And people didn’t stop understanding how computers work either, just because they used C. And yeah, maybe local LLMs will become the norm, and I hope so. But market forces (hardware prices) certainly are working against that right now.

> because that's the information they had

That has always been and will always be the excuse for these kind of rights violations by the police. "Oh it's just what we were told, sorry".

And yes, it's worth bringing up e.g. Palestine or climate activists being beaten, arrested etc. in this context, because it's where the limits and tolerances for this kind of behavior are being tested.

Police, at least in Germany, always justify their transgressions with arguments like: "well we had to beat up these demonstrators because they were engaging in criminal behavior", the "criminal behavior" being "chanting a slogan they don't like" or "carrying an umbrella" (I kid you not).

TLDR: If we continue to allow law enforcement to justify their actions with "well that's just what I was told", we are in for a very bad time, because, it turns out, anything can be justified this way.

Hey Peter. I know this is super unrelated, but I’ve used the contact form and sent an email in order to understand what the hell a conductor license costs for self-hosting. So far i’ve only gotten automated requests for feedback as a response.. That’s certainly not encouraged me to dig deeper into using dbos.
Sadly german law enforcement is definitely on the Palantir train..

Re:European sentiments towards the US hit an all-time low on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @11:00AM (#48477388)
> Comparing the holocaust with the invasion of Gaza stripe after 8. October

So, first of all, the comment you're referencing didn't make that statement, so you're making things up. This seems like it would stop any insightful conversation in its tracks before it can even begin.

That being said, in the eyes of many, Israel is very clearly committing genocide, and Israeli officials have resorted to eliminatory and genocidal rhetoric many times [1]. This is not a fringe opinion but a well-backed argument, and most certainly not a "huge red flag".

Re:European sentiments towards the US hit an all-time low on Wednesday June 10, 2026 @06:26AM (#48474175)
I don't understand why this is being downvoted. It's not unreasonable to assume that increased militarization, coupled with increased nationalistic sentiment, could lead to inner-european conflicts escalating into wars. Sure, right now Russia is the enemy, but who knows what'll happen in ten years. And the military machinery is not just going to be scaled down immediately.

If he's being downvoted for his "selling weapons to Israel" comment, I just want to highlight that even a majority of Germans is against it, with 80% not wanting to send weapons [1]. Of course there are different polls, and others find that "only" 30% say "stop them", plus another 43% saying "limit them [2]. Either way, only a small minority is pro "send all the weapons".

I assure you, the rest of the world will be better off. Most of the worlds population (I think this is fair to say, at least in absolute numbers, not GDP) does not hold the US in very high regard. Many of the innovations of the last decade or two have not made most people’s life’s better, _especially_ from tech. I’m not saying there aren’t exceptions, but the world really does not need the US (my opinion).
