Re:Why Lisp is now an acceptable scripting language on Sunday March 27, 2016 @11:33AM (#11370281)
Because four times now you've said "I know more than you" and have provided nothing of substance to back your claims. I know this is HN and "what you say" means more than "what you do", but hipster bravado will only get you so far.
Re:Why Lisp is now an acceptable scripting language on Sunday March 27, 2016 @09:44AM (#11369920)
And you're clearly the arbiter that gets to tell people what they do and don't know. I guess pretending to be competent online helps you, in some way.
Re:Why Lisp is now an acceptable scripting language on Saturday March 26, 2016 @07:52PM (#11368083)
"The site went down, but it's not my fault. Even though I'm the guy coding it". ok, 10x.
Re:Why Lisp is now an acceptable scripting language on Saturday March 26, 2016 @04:45PM (#11367372)
"Weak programming"?
Re:Why Lisp is now an acceptable scripting language on Saturday March 26, 2016 @04:44PM (#11367369)
No, I hadn't read the article. The site was down...
Re:NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program? on Friday March 25, 2016 @10:08AM (#11360142)
[citation needed]

It's really nice how we once again depend on "I think some guys do it like this" for performance. What happened to standards?

What's next? SEO for code?

Re:Microsoft chatbot is taught to swear on Twitter on Thursday March 24, 2016 @10:50AM (#11353218)
Well... what did they expect? Seriously! There is no shortage of experimental evidence of what happens when a bot is trained by "the Internet".
Re:NPM and Left-Pad: Have We Forgotten How to Program? on Thursday March 24, 2016 @08:37AM (#11352256)
Case in point: the left-pad package has quadratic complexity.
Re:iPhone SE on Monday March 21, 2016 @02:30PM (#11330496)
Wut... Because the iPhone 5S had great design?

Contrary to the popular meme, not all people buy Apple because they're shallow appearance-obsessed hipsters.

Re:We only hire the trendiest on Monday March 21, 2016 @07:42AM (#11327386)
The OP's point is that "This only works if you pay the appropriate amount". If you go with that process, but discard the "money" variable, you'll only interview the people who got rejected from every one of the well-paying companies.
Re:We only hire the trendiest on Monday March 21, 2016 @07:41AM (#11327383)
Hell, at this point I'd be happy with "command-line python". I've seen a few-too-many "Rails, but only in RubyMine" devs.
Re:GitHub doesn't show search field unless you sign in on Sunday March 20, 2016 @07:38AM (#11322570)
Guy, you're wrong. You can keep arguing, but that won't change reality.
Re:Twitter shut down Emojitracker's access on Thursday March 17, 2016 @04:37AM (#11303191)
The only way for them to get developers on their platform is to wait for the next generation of developers. Literally nobody will base anything on their stuff now, and this has been the case for a good few years.
Re:The Speed of a Unicorn on Wednesday March 16, 2016 @11:29AM (#11298072)
Either "Games aren't real software", "If it's not in the US, we mostly don't care" or "Real Unicorns take VC and get acquired by Facebook, Microsoft acquisitions don't count".

Pick your poison.

That's really weird... It kind of tells me that they don't have confidence in the platform. Dogfooding is important, kids!
Re:Marissa Mayer Wants Three More Years to Turn Around Yahoo on Saturday March 12, 2016 @09:05AM (#11272899)
Because the Messiah complex is finally dying?
Re:FBI May Demand iOS Source Code, Signing Key on Friday March 11, 2016 @02:22PM (#11268842)
Sure. Just like we did with SOPA. Wait...
Re:Add Reactions to Pull Requests, Issues, and Comments on Friday March 11, 2016 @02:54AM (#11265303)
That's a bit suspicious, really. A feature like "Reactions to a comment" doesn't take two years to implement, even with all the scaling considerations. And people have been complaining about that for at least two years.
Re:Add Reactions to Pull Requests, Issues, and Comments on Friday March 11, 2016 @02:52AM (#11265299)
"Facebook does this way, so we do it this way."
Re:How Changing WebFonts Made Rubygems.org 10x Faster on Wednesday March 09, 2016 @06:24AM (#11252271)
Because a developer-centered website needs custom webfonts, right? Even at the expense of performance.

If only designers would learn that their job is not to paint a pretty picture, but to provide a good experience...

Re:Performance and Usage at Instagram on Sunday March 06, 2016 @07:53PM (#11236427)
It could be a hash operation, yes. But would it really be necessary to make it a cryptographic hash? It would explain the performance issues, yes. But who uses cryptographically-secure hashing for use-cases where the answer is "MD5"?
Re:The Elephant in the Room: Web design work is drying up on Thursday February 25, 2016 @05:01AM (#11173432)
I love it how every year the "age at which a startup will hire" increases by one year.

They must've put something in the water in 1987, because those '88 children "took our jobs" ten years in a row.

Or maybe you're just rehashing buzzwords, too. One of the two.

Re:Twitter launches Fabric mobile app for developers on Wednesday February 24, 2016 @05:45AM (#11165791)
I am using Crashlytics, which got acquired and is now part of Fabric.io. For the most part, it's "use Crashlytics and pretend the rest doesn't exist".
Re:Twitter launches Fabric mobile app for developers on Wednesday February 24, 2016 @05:39AM (#11165767)
Same. Is it that hard to just ship a library via CocoaPods? Google do it, Facebook does it. But nooo, Twitter is "speshul" and they just have to be able to drop multiple folders in the root of my project.
Re:GitLab 8.5 released on Tuesday February 23, 2016 @01:25AM (#11156988)
Suppose you are a web agency. Every single project for every single client should be version-controlled, right? But that tends to quickly add up when using GitHub - about a dollar per project per month.

So, if my company finishes 30 projects per year, we'd be paying $360/year to GitHub for what is essentially "storing a backup". And if we do this every year, that's $1000/year within 3 years. Not to mention that for "Organizations" the prices are doubled. For some reason. So... $2000/year?

Right now the same job is done by a $5/mo linode, with the prospects of upgrading to $10/mo.

Re:GitLab 8.5 released on Monday February 22, 2016 @02:05PM (#11153374)
"GitHub failing hard".

GitLab is great, but it's kind of a copycat project. Nothing wrong with that, it's just there really isn't a compelling reason to join beyond "less-predatory pricing".

And the people who care about that use private repos, not OSS.

Re:How High-Flying Zenefits Fell to Earth on Friday February 19, 2016 @09:05AM (#11133480)
"until the money runs out".
Yep, he's right. But like many a programmer, he just does not have a way with words.
I believe the core of their result is that "Women do it more than men", not that "they do it".
Re:Palantir acquires Kimono on Monday February 15, 2016 @07:12PM (#11107028)
I'll be the first to agree that Excel "actually works" and "solves a real problem". But if you had actually used Kimono, you'd know that it was one of those tools that was just finicky enough to be unusable by "regular people". And just weak enough to not be productive for programmers.
