News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Everything is more meaningful, do you mean? In developed countries, agriculture is highly automated, and if you want a hobby garden in your leisure time, you can choose how much automation you want.
> Because most 'AI ethicists' are overeducated well off urbanite upper-middle class landed gentry-adjacents

Every time I come back to HN after a break, I am quickly reminded of why I left.

What a great idea! Can you point at a concrete explanation of how it is affordable with astronomy's budget?
TLEs come with a variety of precision. The gold standard right now is for the satellite owner to have GPS on the satellite and publish it.
To comment on this a little more, it would be way out of our budget to abandon our telescopes on earth and do it all from space.
The fun part of that was that astronomers were whining about light pollution all along, and being ignored. And here we are.
> are missing the longer view.

I love all the condescending comments like this one.

How dare that guy have a clear opinion that he's willing to back up with reasons!

Way better than Dijkstra being pithy about everything.

Well, yes, in that you would be arrested.
Re:FTX Balance Sheet on Sunday November 13, 2022 @03:10AM (#33581055)
Remember the Wirecard collapse, where there was a fake bank account in the Phillipines that allegedly had $2.1 billion USD in it?

This is the crypto equivalent.

> Production of Gas is incidental to oil drilling

For some wells, yes. For others, no.

The German government has already taken action several times during this crisis.
Don't blame astronomers! We think it's cold when it's actually cold, not only after the solstice.

20 years of "progress" and hey, C++20 is gaining the likely attribute.

Isn't low-latency trading only a subset of finance?

Re:M.2 for Hackers – Connectors on Tuesday November 08, 2022 @08:41PM (#33526665)
I'm a guilty party for reusing a connector because it already existed -- we wanted to make a HyperTransport slot standard (HTX), so we used 2 PCIe standard connectors. We placed them at an unusual depth from the edge so it was unlikely that anyone would accidentally plug an actual PCIe card into them. But I'm sure someone was confused by it at some point.
Re:Why Fortran? on Monday November 07, 2022 @01:11PM (#33509676)
Most Fortran compilers are also C compilers, and the Fortran standard library is usually implemented in C. So interop with C is easy.
Wow, that was used for a long time. The Greek one was 700 years.

A Chinese post-doc came to join my group 1 year into the pandemic. He took an antibody test, which should have shown antibodies due to his 2 doses of Sinovax.

Nada.

The first thing he after he arrived in the US was to get vaccinated.

Woah. I have my luggage in my apartment. I never realized what that meant until now.
In comparison, a commonly-used portage in Greece was only 8km long: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diolkos

Much less work, but of course much less benefit.

Re:Compilers and IRS: LLVM IR, SPIR-V, and MLIR on Wednesday November 02, 2022 @03:56PM (#33442047)
Good timing: just got an invite to attend VAST's breakfast discussion at the SC (supercomputing) conference.

HN: two net downvotes for asking a question.

Re:As Last Module Docks, China Completes Its Space Station on Tuesday November 01, 2022 @10:43PM (#33430867)
I think you missed the recent delivery of new roll-up solar panels to the ISS.

Also I don't think the CanadaArm can roam to the Russian segment, but there's a new European arm that does.

This is a direct-to-GEO launch, and some of the payloads are public.

Re:Somali Law on Sunday October 30, 2022 @01:28AM (#33391376)
That was the basis of "Social Darwinism", which turned out to be a terrible fit to reality.
Re:Compilers and IRS: LLVM IR, SPIR-V, and MLIR on Saturday October 29, 2022 @08:31PM (#33389497)
Is reusing tool names in the same sub-field of Computer Science becoming a thing? VAST was a Fortran preprocessor.
Wow. That you attack someone who merely said they're a vegetarian in these terms, and your comment isn't flagged and dead, is extremely embarrassing for HN.

I mean, I have low expectations (on HN) for anything involving vegetarians and vegans, but you've gone lower.

I have a mac mini as a desktop in my home office and actual office, multiple screens, and almost all my windows are either browsers or shell windows to my Linux dev server. I've never developed a MacOS or iOS app.
Re:Why modifying gravity doesn’t add up on Friday October 21, 2022 @01:58AM (#33284971)
Sure, I was expecting that when I started reading the comment, but then it pretty much fell apart.

Even if the comment was clear, it still isn't a very good comparison: GR has relatively easy to verify things like the motion of Mercury, and the factor of 2 when light is bent by the Sun. MOND, not so much.

BTW I took a graduate class from one of the people who named WIMPs. It took considerable effort to overcome the objection of ApJ's editor to the cute name. Fun times.

Re:Why modifying gravity doesn’t add up on Thursday October 20, 2022 @02:36AM (#33271521)
It's a shame that a crackpot comment is at the top of this discussion.

Vulcan was looked for and didn't exist. Einstein won that one. I'm unaware of any MOND theory which changes the orbit of Mercury.
