Re:Sumatra File Manager on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:57PM (#50008382)
Cool! Windows 11 really needs a better file browser. Will give this a try for sure!

Currently using Explorer without the Windows 11 skin. Also tried FilePilot and TotalCommander. But what I really want is Windows explorer with tabs; more or less.

It would be interesting to hear from a Microsoft engineer about what’s going on in there. Explorer is a pretty important piece of the experience, and its currently a nightmare.

Re:Martian Chaos Terrain on Monday October 05, 2026 @01:06PM (#49967494)
Did someone perhaps come here after watching Sebastian Lague’s pen plotter video?

https://youtu.be/qyNWDzO6kKQ

There is a brief mention of chaos terrain while he searches the surface of Mars for an interesting plot.

And here I was hoping for Rust support in Visual Studio.
Re:Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees on Saturday September 26, 2026 @06:33PM (#49861202)
How come my MasterCard is only a MasterCard. We need to sue them! It should be an Visa and an IKEA card too!
Re:Socialism's Positive Rating Tops 40% for First Time on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @11:51AM (#49817956)
In Sweden we often think of our selves as socialist. I suspect it means something very different across the pond. Anyone care to elaborate on the differences?
Re:Salesforce Global Outage on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @11:05AM (#49728193)
Does it mean I won’t get any AI generated slop spam for a few hours?
Re:Italy proposes no fees for digital euro payments under €10 on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @03:37PM (#49632921)
Why is there a fee at all? This is all sponsored by taxes anyway.
I think this is awesome. Anything we can do to get away from burning fossil fuel is a win in my book. I don’t know about this particular effort, but it seems to me that aviation could really need some big wins in this direction. Last I looked we still run smaller planes on leaded fuel. Crazy.
Re:Malicious Rust crate Arrayref runs a build-time payload on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:25AM (#49384909)
Why would a malicious library author limit their maliciousness to the build script?
Re: on Wednesday August 12, 2026 @12:54PM (#49275382)
The new packing law makes selling direct to customers in EU tricky and expensive for small operators. I understand the spirit of what they are trying to achieve. But missing out on having a single register is unforgivable.
I’m surprised session cookies, and cookies in general, are not already encrypted? But I suspect this is a more clever scheme?
Really cool! I’d love to try those switches. Can’t imagine using a non-split keyboard though. Great work regardless. Stunning.
Re:Humans Will Never Leave the Solar System on Thursday August 06, 2026 @09:41AM (#49196564)
Can’t even get my friends to buy a used electric car instead of a diesel. Which is an improvement in drivability and comfort - maybe a mild inconvenience for some. Imagine trying to make humans do larger changes in their lives. I think, this won’t happen voluntarily.
So with Chat Control 2.0 your nudes are collected and viewed by some creeps in a room somewhere. They are automatically viewed — nej, shared — with a bunch of strangers. Great.
Re:Advancing the price-performance frontier with GPT‑5.6 on Thursday July 30, 2026 @03:05PM (#49114261)
Game play bots (monsters, commanders maybe) would be really cool. But it needs long term support and probably local AI instead.
Re:Advancing the price-performance frontier with GPT‑5.6 on Thursday July 30, 2026 @01:50PM (#49113316)
What are your use case for these? I’m manly interested in coding where more capability is better - give me a 10x model at 10x the price and I’ll take it. A worse model at very low cost has no appeal to me. At-least not for coding. Translation maybe? OCR?
Re:REO Trucks I4 4WD Pickup Truck Starts at $21,500 on Sunday July 19, 2026 @06:37AM (#48966728)
They portray 5h charging at home as a downside. Something to scorn at. But, how long does it take to fill up a diesel truck at home? I haven’t gone to a gas station since getting an EV a few years ago. It trickle charges while I sleep. This is easily the biggest convenience.
I can see three reasons:

1. They have left over capacity that will go unused otherwise. Most users have hit their limits before the end of the week. Might as well get some use out of the servers.

2. A backend change made migrating usage tracking hard, inaccurate, or impossible.

3. A usage tracking issue meant the usage wasn’t accurate anyway and they needed a reset to save face / avoid contract breach.

The addiction or marketing strategy seems too clever. Why explain something with cleverness that can be explained by laziness or stupidity.

Re:Steam Machine: Between 12k and 15k Units Sold per week on Saturday July 18, 2026 @11:01AM (#48958739)
I run Windows on all my computers but was pleasantly surprised by the desktop mode on SteamOS. The incredible number of options on a simple config dialog such as changing the keyboard layout was incredibly impressive (which isn’t SteamOS specific but rather a Gnome thing?).
Re:Kimi K3 is now live on Friday July 17, 2026 @05:11AM (#48945011)
Every time I try one of the newer models I don’t want to go back. What is the value of a dumper model? It makes more mistakes. Wastes more of my time. At anything below Opus 4.8 I’m better of writing code myself. As a tools, it needs to outperform me. Unfortunately, it tends to be lazy. Which is rather ironic from a machine. We taught it well. Alignment is not an issue :’)
Re:Decoy Font on Thursday July 16, 2026 @01:15PM (#48937324)
I was thinking this too. Then it might as well look like a normal font. But copy-paste and you get a garbled mess. Screen readers though.
Re:Mysteries of Telegram Data Centers on Thursday July 16, 2026 @05:58AM (#48932429)
Absolutely, but more focused on smaller groups. Family and friends. I think it has to do with the encryption scheme. Large groups are probably tricky. Therefore the app isn’t built for them. But small groups are perfectly fine.
Re:Mysteries of Telegram Data Centers on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @02:31PM (#48925143)
Sounds a lot like we might as well use Discord?
Re:Mysteries of Telegram Data Centers on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @01:59PM (#48924717)
Agreed. I don’t see the appeal compared to Signal. Although, Signal is also sketchy with an operating cost in the tens of millions of dollars per year. Where does the money come from?
Re:Mysteries of Telegram Data Centers on Wednesday July 15, 2026 @01:56PM (#48924675)
Are people still using Telegram? What is the upside compared to Signal?
Re:AI 2040: Plan A on Saturday July 11, 2026 @04:49AM (#48870130)
Remember people. We didn’t die form the 2k bug. We didn’t die when the Maya calendar ran out. We didn’t die from that asteroid or the other. Spreading fear is a very old pastime. How is to say AI won’t hit a wall in 6 months and we’re left with barley passable code parrots forever?
Re:Kernel Anti-Cheat Is an Overreach on Tuesday July 07, 2026 @04:10AM (#48814938)
I play a lot. Competitive shooters mostly. Most of them are unplayable for one or two reasons. Cross play (controllers with aim assist) and cheaters. As a PC player I would like to see no aim assist and actual consequences for cheating. I’ll gladly verify my real world identity, if it meant cheaters where banned once and forever. I’ve heard this is how it works in Korea (claim not verified) and could see it work here too as most of Europe has access to very UX friendly state sponsored digital ID.

If there were actual stakes to cheating, it would be less prevalent. Now you can create another account and keep playing. Often for free!

On a side note. How come replay analysis doesn’t catch more cheaters?

Re:EU Council forces Chat Control via fast-track on Sunday July 05, 2026 @03:05PM (#48796985)
It seems a lot of people are doing amazing things with Patreon. Share some things for free (free as in beer) then have a paid tier for those who want more. Convince us you’re worthy, then we’ll give you money willingly.
Re:EU Council forces Chat Control via fast-track on Sunday July 05, 2026 @11:48AM (#48795164)
Im pretty sure it is illegal. In my understanding, it must be equally easy to reject and accept. And the website MUST continue working under either choice. Which is not the case here.

I think the lawmakers should have made all forms of tracking illegal instead. That would make law writing and following easier. And closer to the spirit of what they are trying to accomplish and what everyone wants (except you Silicon Valley O.o)

Re:EU Council forces Chat Control via fast-track on Sunday July 05, 2026 @09:44AM (#48794283)
So what platforms will this apply too? What platforms Dow sit already apply too? All SMS, large email providers (Gmail?), WhatsApp, Apple services?
