Re:Why doesn't advice work? on Tuesday July 30, 2024 @04:16PM (#41113687)
you can always ask the other person, if they want advise or not
for me it would be more about who you are speaking to. If i know somebody i will tell them straight that it is a bad idea. Anybody else, depends on the context or the business relation.
Re:The case for not sanitising fairy tales on Tuesday June 25, 2024 @06:50AM (#40786825)
yeah and both ways are wrong. I have as much in common with the the german nazis as i have with the japanese war crimes with the chinese and i am german.

We should have strived for understanding that racism is to be fought against and not "hey these countries are bad because they lost" If you have seen the horrors what the americans did to the vietnamese or other way around, or the serbs against their neighbors the bosnians, you come to the conclusion every country is shit.

We need to understand as a species that in order to evolve, we need to break out of the violence and dumb wars, over resources. We have so much potential and we are wasting it, because of stupid and greedy people pushing misery and hate. Don't get me started on religion

Re:Docker Considered Harmful (2021) on Saturday June 15, 2024 @11:53PM (#40694566)
or treat vm's as containers and just spawn a single process in a firecracker vm. More secure than containers will ever be and just as easy as another vm. Could be managed by kubernetes if you like or need to manage many of these.
i had such a hard time learning traefik and transitioning to V2. I do not fall into the standard case, wanting to use traefik for containers, not running on the same host (you cannot have labels annoted as the docs suggest, if the container is on another host) Docs were sparse and also not wanted to use the env vars for the traefik config as well, so took a bit of fumbling and reading and eventually i figured it out, but was almost on the verge of going back to haproxy
Re:How Perfectly Can Reality Be Simulated? on Thursday April 18, 2024 @10:25AM (#40076626)
interesting perspective. So all entities in one big simulation to ensure everyone has the same clock/variables/... and then just simulate around the person?
Re:How Perfectly Can Reality Be Simulated? on Thursday April 18, 2024 @05:09AM (#40074305)
you don't need to simulate everything in a big monolith and with all the complexity of everybody in it, that does not scale well.

You only need to simulate the perspective of you and what you can see, observe and the interactions you make right now.

Same as video games just render in a certain radius around you.

That scales well per human. Heck everybody around you might be an NPC and you will never know

do it like the french and blow shit up
i did pure oxygen in a pressure chamber for about 4 weeks, it got significantly better after that, at least in my perception. Could be also just the time after the infection
Re:Runtipi: Docker-Based Home Server Management on Friday April 05, 2024 @02:27AM (#39939260)
for me it would be a lot of underlying complexity for "just" exposing docker-compose containers to the internet.

I don't really understand the target audience here. If you need to manage dns, server hardening, backups, upgrades, internet exposing and evaluating the risks behind that, you should be able to do the rest yourself too. And it is single server only

for the money your governments spend licensing MS products, they could develop libreOffice from scratch in better, faster and nicer looking.

Or just pay a few devs or a few hundred to make it better and still pay less in fees every year.

Re:Ceph: A Journey to 1 TiB/s on Friday January 19, 2024 @04:50PM (#39061704)
minio is good but you really need fast disks. They also really don't like, when you want to change the size of your cluster setup. No plan to add cache disks, they just say use faster disks. I have it running, goes smoothly but not really user friendly to optimize
Re:VMware Kills Off 56 Products on Friday January 19, 2024 @04:46PM (#39061661)
Problem is that management is usually not skilled enough (or just greedy for bonus money short term) to understand what is happening. Cloud is good if you are tiny or need to scale really fast if you are growing and then move out of it. For the bigger companies it can be a good strategy to scale out, but for that you only need IAAS and no fancy cloud vendor lock-in products. you will always be cheaper if you build it on your own, if your usecase is heavy load.

you might be cheaper with colocation instead of building your own datacenter but most enterprises still have a need for their own anyway.

meh, low level court decision, this will not stand in the higher court.
Re:VMware Kills Off 56 Products on Thursday January 18, 2024 @05:54PM (#39049077)
i think i will still be in tech when the pendulum swings back to on-prem, when everybody notices how awfully expensive the cloud is, after the bigger players raise the prices at will, because they killed off the competition.
or just get rid of microsoft in the workplace and enjoy the absence of a terrible environment with the addition of fewer attack scenarios, better software and happier users but sad management people, but they don't do work on their machines anyway ;)

same experience, absolute ignorance, very annoying
Re:Cuber: Deploy your apps on Kubernetes easily on Tuesday September 05, 2023 @06:35AM (#37390020)
if it works for them, let them have it.

i stopped reading the spec, after i have seen that the only label they attach is the lb. anyone who really uses k8s will not at this product longer than it takes, reading the readme or the first bit of code.

Re:Is anyone using PyPy for real work? on Monday July 31, 2023 @12:43PM (#36945292)
not using it, but thank you for the work you put in, highly appreciated, we only strive, because so many of us put in the work :)
tl:dr operating yourself around 6-10k€/year fixed price for hosting the 500TB. If cloudflare offers to store that and operate it for free this is a no brainer for cloudfare R2, if the 32k migration is really a one time only cost.

i personally would invest in a solution which decreases or at least flattens the cost, when the storage needs increase, instead of the current linear curve. Biggest problem in "cloud" and biggest win in hosting yourself.

if you want to do it yourself i would probably think about something like this:

500TB with 20tb hdd's are around 28 disks needed. This will cost between 15-20.000€ per server(4U with sata/sas controller and 36-40 disk chassis)

with no raid and high availability you will need 2 locations and 2 servers in a colocated setup. i would say colo will cost you 500-1000€ a month

Then you would use the cloudflare cdn with their OSS offering and be done with it.

initial cost 40k operational cost + colo = around 6-12k/year i would assume, if you have people nearby to do maintenance.

tell me you are french, by not telling me you are french ;) "connexion" :D
it really feels like, they should have been given just pure venture capital and a lot more time and test hardware in small batches. And then with enough knowledge pick real good hardware and then deliver a kick ass linux phone. The processor is about 6 years old, a lot will not be working at this time, i still support the idea of a linux phone, i really hope it gets better in the next few years. this android, ios duopoly really sucks ass
Summary: With apologies for the delay, we are now preparing your Librem 5 to ship and need you to read this email carefully with replying until May 01, 2023.

i ordered mine on 14.10.2019

Re:Ibramenu: Bash-based Self-hosted App Deployment on Friday May 12, 2023 @04:12PM (#35921698)
to be fair, you can select to install any "basic packages" but it is all or nothing
Re:Ibramenu: Bash-based Self-hosted App Deployment on Friday May 12, 2023 @06:38AM (#35914362)
so i have to use a menu, to select a dozen things to setup a single system, with the non changeable defaults, they will select for me. (why would i install node, or dos2unix or midnight commander?) and the install as default ruby, which most of use don't use at all so giving us bloat for not much function.

it writes its alias in the global space instead of the local user echo $insert_alias | sudo tee -a /etc/bash.bashrc

This feels like a tool for users switching from windows to linux, to be able to flatten the learning curve. For any user that is a little bit familiar with linux, this i a major downgrade to any other toolset IMO.

i would open an issue, but they don't offer that on the repo to post feedback you have to register with a service called "Canny" the other issues channel is discord

- run shellcheck and fix the issues and warnings - publish tags, so people can select versions - add customization to the installed packages - actually document how to use the parameters, the scripts offer, instead of just not doing that - add uninstall script! - add silence command (run with parameters to automate the menu selects, why would i want to do this manually or remember what i selected on every machine?)

I mean its free and all, but reads like a product, which needs a developer who cares about a few industry standards, or just needs more time (first code commit was on Nov 27, 2022

Sounds like it fits their needs, but ansible sounds like a much better choice and also sounds like they have the "not invented here" problem

Re:Ask HN: Is split keyboard worth the effort? on Thursday April 20, 2023 @06:01AM (#35638045)
i have a planck, a preonic, a moonlander and i am not happy with any of them.

My best choice i think would be a better version of the Natural Ergonomics Microsoft Elite Keyboard. This thing with half height mechanical keys, qmk firmware, without the numpad and a split space key would be awesome. Maybe i am building one, thinking about it know

swing and miss ;)
Re:Airport scraps 100ml liquid rule with new scanners on Tuesday April 04, 2023 @06:06AM (#35437349)
in laos they make you security check for the high speed trains as well as needing passport photos of you upfront for your tickets. Same regulations as air travel with deodorant, knives and stuff like that, it is super ridiculous
