News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

We have other options, yet we still keep using Meta. They're tied to all sorts of unethical stuff. Why. Stop using Meta.
Re:Life After SEO on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:48AM (#50131164)
Huh this is probably the one thing I don't use LLMs for. Surprised people are getting news from these things. I've found things like AI Inboxes completely lacking and uninteresting even with google products.
They way these companies are structured we're seeing them remove the people doing the actual work while nobody wants to mess with the execs. My company has something like 60 EVP titles, with SVPs then VPs then senior director then directors. Pretty much everyone VP and above could disappear and our lives would be easier. It creates a lot of politickings and empire building that holds back the company and the individuals then the individuals delivering code and products get targeted by the efficiency metrics and nothing at the top changes.

I have no idea how it’s sustainable but I dont see AI CEOs coming until a new company becomes successful from the bottom using that model.

Yeah just the same way the rides at amusement parks are that go faster and higher. The end result won't change anything for the rest of us. It's entertainment.
Pivoted during Covid and never reevaluated I guess

Opinions are great and all but do you have actual data to back it up ?

Huh? Cosmic is out, there's some bugs still but its pretty nice.
Re:Pi 1.0 on Friday October 02, 2026 @09:31AM (#49933331)
Odd you claim there’s no reason except “sheep”, did you ever stop to consider people just enjoyed the experience so stuck with it ?
Re:Ask HN: Which harness do you use with Qwen3.8 27B? And why? on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @09:32AM (#49815884)
I've been mostly drawn to pi simply because I can modify it so easily to have extensions or behavior I want.
Re:I am done with this shit on Wednesday September 23, 2026 @09:26AM (#49815788)
I find it wild companies were so ready to ship intellectual property to another company. I sort of thought they would experiment then use all the massive RAM on our Mac books to implement something more local we can use and keeps our stuff out of another companies hands but it was just Claude Claude Claude tokenmax tokenmax tokenmax.
Is budget really a reality here? This administration just proved it could spend billions on making gas expensive for us.

Software keyboards are not "far better" than physical keyboards.
Re:Steve Wozniak launches merch store on Thursday September 17, 2026 @08:05AM (#49739578)
I was hoping for some nerd stuff but it's just his name printed on things? Why would anyone buy this?
No, quite the opposite. It helped me get started on some things because it saved time. LLMs have their shortcomings but their ability to act as a search and summarize service is quite good. I'm not using it much for vibe coding, more for information and as an already skeptical person I mentally prune results to get where I want.
Re:US interest rates raised for first time in three years on Thursday September 17, 2026 @07:38AM (#49739323)
Can you prove any of that? Most stuff I see online are people complaining how they can't afford anything anymore.
Re:Salesforce Global Outage on Thursday September 17, 2026 @07:32AM (#49739284)
The requirement is to get customers out of impact as #1 priority. If there's suspicions around memory/thread states a restart makes a lot of sense. Digging through logs and flight records takes a lot of time, customers are losing business in that time. If you're afraid to restart your service you need to work on your telemetry.
Re:Carmakers Have a New Idea to Boost EV Range: Add a Gas Engine on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:57AM (#49625800)
“New idea” ? The Chevy volt had this in 2010.
Re:Cloud in a Bottle: making self-hosting accessible to everyone on Saturday September 05, 2026 @08:29PM (#49582164)
I'm rather baffled by that statement, with docker its...as easy as its ever been
Re:1Password Replied to My Disappointment on Saturday September 05, 2026 @08:25PM (#49582131)
You can share credentials I do with my wife. Not sure you can hide vaults though. I never used that on 1password.
Some value coherent educated responses to emotional name calling. Being proud of devolving into that is something I don't share.
Re:Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says on Saturday September 05, 2026 @07:31PM (#49581797)
A lot of people go into denial/defensive mechanisms if you try and point out what they're doing is bad.
Ironic to be acting like this and telling others to go back to bluesky. Please go for a walk.
Re:GPT-6 Astra on OpenRouter on Saturday September 05, 2026 @12:25PM (#49578083)
My company literally mandated tokenmaxxing while all the engineers told them this was a bad idea.
Re:1Password Replied to My Disappointment on Friday September 04, 2026 @08:53AM (#49563898)
You'll have to add some actual reasoning to this, I switched from 1password to locally hosted Bitwarden(Vaultwarden) 6 months ago and I don't miss anything.
I think the point is these home systems are controlled centrally and can be used the same way flock can. I personally removed ring and installed my own system that doesnt export video out of concern with the governments lack of checks and balances anymore.
Here we go yet again trading our health for wealthy people to get what they want

Probably because they're all phoning home looking for licenses first
Re:Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @01:25PM (#49437518)
Im really surprised the number of comments here who think the rewards are free money they're getting. The stores are paying 3-5% transaction fees for you to use credit cards then they give you 2-3% back and force you to spend it on things they deem can be redeemed. You're paying for that 2-3% back in higher prices for everything. The whole thing is a giant scam and should be shut down.
Re:Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @01:24PM (#49437497)
They charge you extra, they just make it invisible. The store has to pay the fees and it causes prices to go up for everyone to cover them.
Re:Credit Card Rewards Became a $9.2B Wealth Transfer on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @01:20PM (#49437452)
How do you think they got that 2.5% to "give back"?
