Our company migrated for very similar reasons - I'm surprised that people aren't mentioning this pain point more. Maybe the overall execution of microservices is poor, so people generally would rather go back to the old thing.

Agreed, I think that self-driving cars in the L5 sense are decades away, but let's be honest, how much of driving is simply following the car in front of you? That seems like a much easier problem to solve.
I'm personally most interested in the trucking example, where trucks can form a caravan with a single driver in the front.

Agreed, I'm an HKer who grew up there but am in the US now. There is a certain desperation that is palpable from talking to my friends back home.
They've been so let down by the HK govt that they've just given up all hope. Career sucks, family sucks, home sucks, can't marry cause houses are too expensive, rent is unaffordable so you can't move out, unless you're in the top 20% of your senior class, you can't go to college, it's grim. Most people I know are trying to move.
Unless the societal ills get solved, people will always find another proxy/reason to protest.

Good point, I've never thought about it that way. We usually see US tech firms supporting the govt (and the resulting protests from their employees). But I wonder how the climate were to change if the govt was proactive in supporting the local tech firms instead.

Are hardware vulnerabilities so difficult to find and insidious that no amount of auditing and investigation by the US govt will ever be sufficient?

The real issue is that developed countries don't help other developing countries develop. The US got rich in the same ways that China is now getting rich, by stealing.
I think this is my favorite article on the subject.
