wizerdrobe

Never a popular topic on HN, but I’ve been through some appalling diversity training as a white man that seems a-ok in the broader culture. I’ve left one high paying prominent fintech job over such nonsense.

Sadly, I feel this is the result - if we’re not going to be colorblind as a rule everyone is going to “wise up” (and I use the phrase loosely) and start attacking everyone else.

The entire article presses the social angle and buries the ask from Lena, in all fairness to ‘ecmascript
Considering I had to undergo a racist struggle session in order to volunteer teach computer science at a local high school through Microsoft’s education outreach charity, there are some more pressing social issues than a pretty lady in a hat in the computer science realm.

For some reason I’m simultaneously a racist while male oppressor promoting white supremacy but also I’m being asked by the same people promoting this dumb idea to volunteer in a majority black high school.

Go square that circle…

They have not increased the tax but still collect it.

We’ve definitely paid for the road. We pay every time we fill our tank.

They’re not bleeding or have obvious trauma?

I’m not defending the hospital in TFA, per se, but my wife recently had an ER visit on a miscarriage. She was immediately admitted and tended to be a doctor for the fact that she was hemorrhaging.

During the course of our 12 hours I came and went from her room through the waiting room and to my vehicle. Saw folks waiting hours and hours. For all I know they had a faulty pump.

When it came time for dismissal, we waited hours and hours. The attending staff were handing a GSW and a head trauma on a child. While I didn’t go full-Karen I had to drop the “my wife suffered a miscarriage and is having a mental breakdown, are we going to be banned from your hostile system if we just leave?” to receive final clearance to leave.

Triage is just… complicated. You can’t plan and staff accurately for random tragedy.

Reminds of my recent favorite fun fact: when they outlawed asbestos in home building in the Us, they allowed firms with stock on-has to keep using it if they so chose.

So dangerous we need to outlaw its sale… but hey we don’t wanna waste a few dollars here…

I used to roll BJJ with a 50-ish year old man. As a teenager he suffered a debilitating car crash and hip replacement at the time, resulting in his having a cane until his second replacement circa 2020. This allowed him to walk cane free and practice marital arts.

The technology is there for hip replacements, it would seem.

It’s called being human.

I worked next door to the church that was shot up in Charleston and felt similarly moved despite not knowing them, never having been inside the building, and not having even been a Christian at the time.

It is a bit strange at some level - not having any true connection beyond proximity but you should probably worry if you _don’t_ at least feel a little something.

I’m not at all in favor of the assert confiscation I witnessed - but - why should we care about investors from shady countries of all places?

In what jurisdiction would I be liable for verbally harassing a scammer?

I ask because worked for a cybersecurity firm and we would, on occasion, and mostly the “teh lulz” screw with phone scams. Our legal had nothing to say on that front.

What are you imagining the typical rate is in much of America. When we lived in the city we had a range of about 225 to 300 per week as of last year. Outside of the city we pay 160 per week.

The real issue was the waiting list…

Re:Don't ask to ask, just ask on Wednesday March 20, 2024 @07:36AM (#39765091)
I’ve never personally been bothered by the ask-to-ask, the reality is I have a 100 WPM typing speed and “Sure, Whaddya got” is muscle memory at this point in life. Pleasantries and social oddities are just part of being a human after all.

What bothers me is the folks that ask-to-ask then go ghost for 15 minutes or more. You’ve captured my attention, please capitalize on it! If you’ve broken my concentration and walked away, _that_ is rude.

Meanwhile in America I am allowed to self-remove asbestos as a homeowner no verifications required. Whereas a commercial builder is required to have certifications.

Another “fun fact,” when the asbestos ban went into place builders were still allowed to use any remaining stock they held in their warehouses. No new product could be purchased. So homes could still be built years later with a now banned substance.

Fascinating bit of law there.

It’s simple comfort food consistently cooked by an often sassy staff. Sometimes that beats a Gucci plate with opaque aioli at absurd prices.

If Bourdain says my old Waffle House beats a French laundromat who am I to argue?

Cultural institutions are something to behold.

Were these OBs practitioners of abortion? I’m confused on why they would leave, was there a stated protest or is TFA drawing a false conclusion on an existing of providers leaving the state as others already are.

What style of multifamily are you referring to here? Every townhome and apartment style I’ve ever lived in has discrete electrical, plumbing, and HVAC.

I’ve only rarely seen condo styles with shared systems and those typically come with unappealing expensive management fees, insurance, and shared expense to the tune 500+ per month on top of the price for the unit itself. My father used to mantain the infrastructure for such a development and those were prices circa 2000 or so.

What exactly is Kreuzberg 36? I always assumed that was a street number after hearing an old Smut Peddlers song.

Re:One quarter of adult children estranged from a parent on Sunday March 10, 2024 @08:55PM (#39663821)
It is clear you have different cultural expectations. I’ve stated the problem quite clearly and your insistence on interrogating me about my family is unwelcome.

Have a great night.

Re:One quarter of adult children estranged from a parent on Sunday March 10, 2024 @08:02PM (#39663501)
Both parents previously had a guest room but at some point decided to eliminate them in favor of storage for their things, their hobbies, etc.

Then wonder why we are hesitant to spend the money on boarding dogs, driving 5+ hours and renting a hotel. Asking us to commit to $500+ dollars for weekend casual visits is unrealistic and absurd for wealthy retirees.

To be clear they not only have no guest room they have no where for guests to stay.

Re:One quarter of adult children estranged from a parent on Sunday March 10, 2024 @07:30PM (#39663365)
I suppose there is room for both interpretations here, my wife is fond of those rehab shows. I’m aware of parents actively estranging their children for that reason.

I’m of the other cohort, such that you might say my parent has forced my hand in estranging them through their actions but I feel that is nothing more than word choice.

I am early thirties, parents are boomers (1957, 1959)
Re:One quarter of adult children estranged from a parent on Sunday March 10, 2024 @07:10PM (#39663268)
I’m fully estranged from my father since 16 and have flirted with severing ties with my mother, with whom I have a contentious childhood relationship and an adult relationship punctuated with obvious favoritism displayed towards my “good” brother.

Both are certainly downstream of the “me generation,” in terms of how they’ve lived their lives and so I ask, “if you live for you, why should I pain myself to please you?”

Interestingly, neither my parents nor my wife’s parents have guest bedrooms in their 4+ bedroom homes. Yet they wonder why we seldom visit. There’s no question of their ability to have one, they have the room and the finances. They just choose not to.

There’s something fascinating with our parents generation.

Something I’ve wondered throughout the conflict, when and why did the US shift to a focus of techno-supremacy?

Seemingly, our strategy in the WWII was to invest in technology where possible but at the same time throwing many trucks and jeeps and puny Sherman tanks and guns and bandages and bullets and beans at the problem as possible.

Whereas in modern America we seem so much a “wonder weapons” mindset? That seems a poor posture in light of the article, all those expensive weapons will become a burden to protect or just outright destroyed.

Would it not be a _civil_ war?
What makes this so much more impossible than SpaceX building rockets?

Is the payoff worse for ship builders?

I always assumed it was internal metrics or a requirement the tool its fed into.
Note that spotlighting is typically an issue around deer hunting.

For the American Alligator night hunting is the norm with lights being legal (to spot for eye reflection.)

Re:Berlin TYPE: The official type for the city of Berlin on Tuesday February 27, 2024 @06:57AM (#39522991)
While I understand the need or desire of a capital city like Berlin to have “good design” and advertise, i.e. “I <3 NY” a font seems deep in the rabbit hole.

Is there much prior example of other metropolis making this deep of a design choice on small details like a custom font?

Re:Punk is dead and so are we on Monday February 26, 2024 @11:17AM (#39513043)
I don’t know to what degree it’s “a thing” but I know a lot of 30-something punks from my old scene that are now into a kind of homesteading vibe. Moved out to the surrounding countryside as much for economic as ideological reasons. Some are all the way into off-the-grid, home schooling, etc.

Nothing says “Fuck the System!” like solar panels and a wood burning stove I guess?

Interestingly I’ve correctly grow up more recently such that I instead see internet simps here rather than academic misogny as notable, seeing as the tables have largely socially turned since your (I assume by the username) birth year of 1875.
