News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

wiredpancake

I was thinking about this the other day when watching a video about Chernobyl.

They flew countless helicopters over the exposed reactor core and because this was 1986, helicopters didn't have a million sensors or electronics in it. It was entirely mechanical. Effectively all in-use aircraft nowadays could not complete such a mission as the electronics would be rendered null almost instantaneously, even with ECC, etc.

Do these high energy lasers fry the electronics, or are they able to simply ignite and burn holes through the aircraft?

There will be no such thing as an "Walmart Employee" in 2040.

There is a decent chance the term "Employee" as a whole will be eradicated sometime in the next 10 years.

Because 'Teams' isn't just a simple meeting application. It's very feature rich. If you ever have to deal with the admin.teams.microsoft portal you'll know how many options and toggles it has.

Alongside this many businesses deploy 'Teams Supported' or 'Teams Enabled' devices into meeting and conference rooms. Yealink is a popular brand, they don't have baked in support for LibreMeet or whatever meeting products exist.

Re:IPv6 is not insecure because it lacks a NAT on Tuesday January 20, 2026 @11:25PM (#46701102)
There was a report a few years back about people running NTP servers to harvest IPv6 addresses.

Security via obscurity will only get you so far.

Probably breaks some other very important things in Windows.

Not a foolproof solution though, you don't want to be constantly updating your hosts file every time Microsoft changes an endpoint to rename their product offering for the 3rd time this year.

Of course this is where PiHole or some other DNS solution comes in, but ultimately a full uninstall would be preferable.

I've never seen Linde ever in my life (Australia).

What is funny though, at least in the Australia and UK regions, they still use the BOC brand, which is a subsidiary under Linde.

Stallman was right about a number of free and open source software things, although he is a disgusting person for his comments around the Jeffery Epstien situation and his views on minors...

If by "evidence" you mean correlation.

There is a correlation about mothers taking acetaminophen leading to Autism. There is also a correlation about mothers drinking water and it leading to Autism.

Doesn't mean its the right connection. Effectively every first world mother in the past few decades has taken acetaminophen whilst pregnant, given its one of the only possible pain medications allowed, yet we don't see 99% Autism rates.

Assuming correct implementation of the NTP spec and adherence to the "eras" functions, NTP should be resistant to this failure in 2036.

The problem being so many micro-controllers, non-interfaceable or cheaply designed computers/devices/machines might not follow the standards and therefore be susceptible although your iPhone, Laptop and Fridge should all be fine.

What reputation? They are known for being the most greedy payment provider and actively killing various other payment providers.

Everything is ran by the Jews.

If it holds any meaningful amounts of money, the Jews have their nose in it.

Oh wow, the flowchart made by the Government. The government has a registered interest in preventing blockchains for anonymization and decentralization.

Who would of thought?

I should be able to transact with anyone, anywhere in the world, near instantly with little or no fees.

This isn't some radical, cyberpunk extremist, this is just pure trade. We have technology to facilitate this but we've been held back for decades by greed and legislation.

Re:Anthropic raises $13B Series F at $183B post-money valuation on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @09:50PM (#45111427)
It means nothing when most water is recycled anyways. It's not like the GPUs actually drink the stuff, the water just connects to heatsinks and is cycled around.
Re:Anthropic raises $13B Series F at $183B post-money valuation on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @09:49PM (#45111419)
A lot, but maybe a lot less than you expect.

You'd be competing with ASIC miners, which are 100x more cost effective per MH/s. You don't need 100,000GB of VRAM when mining GPU, therefore its waste.

I do basically all of that, CPU idles around 5% but still consumes over 100W. (Minus the Wireless part)

(5800X + 64GB)

I can enable Eco Mode in the BIOS, which will bring down the CPU to about 65W max although its still at about 100W total system.

Running states around 1W? How?
You are losing braincells relying almost entirely on ChatGPT.

Have you noticed yourself getting dumber by chance?

Mr. Hacker man can no longer use a computer properly, has to be babied by an AI system.

Re:Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war on Monday September 01, 2025 @06:18PM (#45097091)
How exactly do you foresee "pre-internet" data sources being the future of AI.

We already train on these encyclopedias, we've trained models on massive percentages of entire published book content.

None of this will be helpful either, it will be outdated and won't have modern findings, understandings. Nor will it help me diagnose a Windows Server 2019 and a DHCP issue or similar.

We are talking about software.
Doesn't work in China, this is a method for last decades censorship.
Shadowsocks isn't a viable method in 2025 it seems. Not by itself apparently. Shadowsocks generates high-entropy noise via packet analysis, which typically is easy to spot out as it looks irregular.
What do you mean? They already arrest thousands of people a year for posting (or even retweeting) things online in the UK.

What makes you think, if the Gov was to implement some sophisticated DPI firewall that blocks a million different things, they won't come after the people who circumvent it? They already enforce petty crimes. I could report you for causing me anxiety and you would have a copper show up at your door.

Nope. Why would Toyota even have an abundance of "old" EV batteries to begin with if they "lasted much longer than expected".

I have a Toyota Landcruiser from 1990.

The only real problem with GN is Steve is a bit of an egotist when it comes to content creators who do less technical analysis, like LTT or Jayz.

He never really got over the stuff with Linus and doubled down on stupid things. I think they both have a great place in the tech scene and LTT's videos of recent have been a lot better quality and researched then yesteryear.

It's almost like EV batteries don't last long...
Re:Ask HN: Why hasn't x86 caught up with Apple M series? on Tuesday August 26, 2025 @12:57AM (#45022417)
iOS 26 comes out this year.
Console isn't even enabled by default. The average player would need to:

1. Enable Developer Console in Settings 2. Find a server via a third party website 3. Use said IP + Port to connect. * This results in low dedicated server player counts due to effort and the issues mentioned in the blog above.

Valve has expressed intentions directly and indirectly to remove the console from CS2 and operate almost exclusively out of the in-game Settings menu.

Over the years, this setting menu has increased in options. Although to cover the vast amount of commands is simply impossible.

Yet known the debug or cheat-protected commands.
