Re:Long Range E-Bike on Sunday March 01, 2026 @03:37PM (#47210413)
The problem is the rider not the bike.
Re:Long Range E-Bike on Sunday March 01, 2026 @03:37PM (#47210399)
As an oldster who used to do weekly century rides and lost that ability due to nerve damage in my foot (thanks to decades of wearing pointy Italian riding shoes), I’d love it if we could focus on simply enforcing laws that exist rather than saddling arbitrary blanket regulations on lawful citizens.

I built an ebike and hell yes I put a throttle on it because it enables me to ride more technical trails. This bike has dramatically increased my quality of life. Please leave me alone and if someone uses a throttle bike in an illegal manner give them a ticket.

Re:The world is suffering from a shortage of tenors on Wednesday February 11, 2026 @02:23PM (#46979540)
On the Song Exploder podcast, Take on Me episode, the artist talks about the producer saying that a male falsetto was a “make this song a hit” button…
Re:25 Years of Wikipedia on Thursday January 15, 2026 @02:13PM (#46637597)
It absolutely is possible to write completely neutrally. All it takes is for the writer to be aware/honest of their biases and to have a goal of achieving a neutral perspective. Of course the goal of most writing is explicitly to not be neutral.
Re:A tab hoarder's journey to sanity on Wednesday January 07, 2026 @02:06PM (#46530966)
Subscription Bookmarking apps will never be part of my workflow.
Re:A tab hoarder's journey to sanity on Wednesday January 07, 2026 @01:39PM (#46530583)
Bah! Tab “hoarding” is part of my workflow and it works great with the right tooling in place: FF with sidebury, containers, and suspender extensions. Panels for 8 high level topics with a set of 10-20 pinned tabs for each and I can see ~60 tabs per panel at once. I work in three phases: tab accumulation (browsing), tab elimination (reading), tab reorg to move tabs to specific panels. Of course vertical tabs make this all possible and it is frustrating that there isn’t a browser with all of my extension functionality and ux baked in.
Re:State of the Fin 2026-01-06 – Jellyfin on Tuesday January 06, 2026 @12:08PM (#46515051)
I use Infuse on an appletv and simply point it at a samba share. Easiest setup ever. What am I missing out on by not using jellyfin or plex?
Re:Last Year on My Mac: Look Back in Disbelief on Sunday December 28, 2025 @11:06AM (#46412026)
While the UI designers are rearranging deck chairs, the UX is totally failing to love up to the promise of an ecosystem. Cross system cut n paste is a neat trick, but I just want timers and alarms to actually work as expected.

I shouldn’t be surprised given that the mac save as dialog box has a name field that is still hard coded to 32 characters visible. Whenever I bitch about it I get pushback that filenames shouldn’t be longer than that! Um hello - tell me you have never worked in the real world outside your iphone bubble without telling me.

Re:Things and Stuff of 2025 on Saturday December 27, 2025 @12:50PM (#46403625)
Agreed. I just wish it could fix these crappy fixed width layouts.
Re:Things and Stuff of 2025 on Saturday December 27, 2025 @11:04AM (#46402743)
I am befuddled. How do are you hearing Portishead (and DCD is even more bizarre)? I hear a touch of Beach House on older releases when there are vocals. But yeah, agree that it is a good addition to my library. Stereolab still hasn’t clicked for me, but I’ll give it another try. Along these lines, Yndling was my cool find this year
I looked at the git page for sponsor block TV, but it’s super confusing. It’s talking about installing python and docker. You can’t do that stuff on an Apple TV right??
Re:Backing Up Spotify on Sunday December 21, 2025 @09:23AM (#46345044)
Why do you want a megacorp to tell you what to listen to!?? There are a million ways to do discovery where some enshitified corp isn’t incentivized to push something at you.
Re:The Beauty of Dissonance on Tuesday December 16, 2025 @05:33PM (#46295556)
Interesting read, but I was surprised that the author didn’t discuss the dynamics of the interplay between dissonance and consonance. What makes consonance so satisfying is the juxtaposition against dissonance. Maybe it didn’t come up because his examples don’t exhibit it? I wouldn’t know because I listen to different genres than he discussed. It is certainly a concept explored in many forms of jazz.

As another modern example, one could listen to the live recordings from the latest The Mars Volta tour where these incredibly beautiful progpop songs are interspersed with atonal and arhythmic interludes giving the simple beauty of their original studio songs a satisfying contrast.

Re:Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (December 2025) on Sunday December 14, 2025 @05:44PM (#46267932)
This looks very interesting and I appreciate the pricing model and lack of cloud. It wasn’t clear from the site, but is there a check all moves prior to execution function? Undo?
Re:Recovering Anthony Bourdain's (really) lost Li.st's on Sunday December 14, 2025 @09:36AM (#46263303)
Ah! That was exactly the problem. Dark Night on Safari on ios.
Re:Recovering Anthony Bourdain's (really) lost Li.st's on Saturday December 13, 2025 @06:09PM (#46259132)
I know we shouldn’t be discussing website design, but using light grey font on a white background is not only ugly, it is basically illegible for anyone with oldster eyes.
Re:Freeing a Xiaomi Humidifier from the Cloud on Saturday December 13, 2025 @10:30AM (#46255216)
Thanks to this post, I checked my ultrasonic filled with tap water. With it running all night in a bedroom with an open door, morning pm2.5 readings are ~30 and the meter is in the kitchen.
Can someone please explain why these token guessing models aren't being combined with logic "filters?"

I remember when computers were lauded for being precise tools.

Is it piracy to pirate a pirate? Most of the content that I view on YT is old live concerts uploaded by fans. Did goog pay a license for those pirate recordings? Who should goog pay? The label? The pirate who uploaded? The OG pirate who recorded the show? So doesn’t this make them pirates too?

These are honest questions and it seems way too fuzzy to me to be making moral judgments about the whole mess.

Re:Nearly all UK drivers say headlights are too bright on Tuesday November 18, 2025 @09:26AM (#45966474)
Where are the AR driving glasses that automatically dim oncoming headlights (and alert the driver to possible road hazards, and…)?

Seems to me that all of this tech to create autonomous driving could be also used to augment human driving.

Re:Daniel Kahneman opted for assisted suicide in Switzerland on Saturday October 11, 2025 @03:53PM (#45552148)
Surely there are better approaches to dealing with this corner case than stripping all humans of their dignity and freedom to choose how and when they will die?
Re:Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26 on Friday October 10, 2025 @06:38PM (#45544640)
>Fortunately, the software capability to handle different text sizes can make it easier to support people with a vision disability. You can design your software with a “zoom” feature that increases the size of characters or graphics on the screen.

If only the iPhone "menu bar" designers took that to heart. It is insane that I have to put on glasses to read the time when there is plenty of room to increase the damn font, but no option to do so.

I am gonna be LMAO when all these youngster UI designers age up to the point where they have to wear readers to use their crap UI.

Re:Ask HN: What's the best hackable smart TV? on Friday October 10, 2025 @06:33PM (#45544593)
Irrelevant.
Re:Ask HN: What's the best hackable smart TV? on Friday October 10, 2025 @03:10PM (#45542614)
Huh? You are confusing video refresh rate with audio latency.
Notion customer here and their AI crap keeps interrupting my workflow. Pretty stupid move on their part because they have motivated me to ditch the subscription.
> The current Cannabis test is far from perfect, but seems to be the best proxy we have available for empirical evidence of level of impairment.

Why do we need a "proxy?" What about good ol' field sobriety testing? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Field_sobriety_testing

Windows Excel in Parallels on Mac is the best option I have found.
> It's reasonably priced and includes access to YouTube Music.

The “price” includes giving your data to the data vampires and is thereby incredibly unreasonable.

Re:Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores on Wednesday October 01, 2025 @10:34AM (#45438200)
I just don't understand the iPad + Magic Keyboard. Combined, they weigh as much as a macbook, which has a much better pad+KB and an OS that isn't crippled.
Re:Leaked Apple M5 9 core Geekbench scores on Wednesday October 01, 2025 @10:15AM (#45438006)
>Which iPadOS limitations are particularly painful for you?

Browser engine lock-in - no Firefox+uBlock Origin = me no buy. And yes, there is Orion, which can run uBlock, but it and Safari have horrible UI/UX.
