What seems weird is that with the massive number of Starbucks closures I've seen smaller indies and local chains open up in the exact same locations and somehow make a go of it- how does that work?
This obviously isn't true unless you think half the population is "evil". It doesn't help anyone's cause when you try and position it as "us vs. Them, and they're wrong"

probably on which this app is built!
SQL is really close to a natural language that's unambiguous, there's a few rough edges but it's not bad. Anything more natural requires a lot of context and needs to solve ambiguity.
I don't think I have a problem with the concept, but do with someone who feels this is their only option, organizers making money off of this and viewers who would demand this and pay for it. Individuals taking extreme personal risks? No problem with that.
It doesn't have to be this way though. Women's basketball doesn't have as much violent contact as the men's game but is a better spectator sport IMO. women's hockey is also great without the crushing blows and no fights. Flag football is fun to watch as it's all about the offense and big defensive plays, not the crippling Hits. Aussie rules football has hitting but nothing like rugby or American football and it's a superior experience for the fans. I like the NFL and UFC but there are options if you don't.
Hurl is great, especially for testing but I fear it's not acceptable by a huge segment of developers because of the lack of a UI
Insomnia and postman are pretty similar these days. I like the REST extension for VS Code and hurl

Better for non-commuters I Believe, especially in North America.

And aren't they all throw aways?

Everything you say is true, but where the financial success comes from is leveraging this (well earned) reputation to support high, no negotiation, take it or leave it prices, and often mandatory financing. We'll see if the market continues to support fixed pricing and turning away cash buyers.
Re:Heat exchanger masks for cold weather cycling on Thursday January 25, 2024 @09:26AM (#39129876)
If you can find time a few weeks later September is much better. Less smoke and fewer tourists-especially the rental motorhomes. Weather is a crapshoot year round but August and September pretty similar (unless it snows in either month!) Note: I'm sure you know this, it's more for any potential bike visitors.

It was cold in Calgary too, but you definitely had it worse!

All merchandise is commercial. Do your kids wear a Nike swoosh t shirt? Okay on an iPad? Love Lego? What the difference if it's a Microsoft football or new relic slingshot (all things I see from where I'm sitting)?
Re:Passwordless: a different kind of hell? on Tuesday January 16, 2024 @12:04PM (#39015647)
Only because you've standardized on their ecosystem and pre-given them all your data. This is not the future we were promised
This is not a great example. It's based on essentially one player, Rick Barry, who shot underhand at a high percentage. There are no bad underhand foul shooters, which I find suspicious, Yet I can cherry pick very tall, very good foul shooters like Kevin Durant. Larry Bird and Jeff hornacek never struck me as particularly concerned with looking cool either.
The warthog is a pretty ugly plane IMO, yet well loved and highly productive, so function seems to have won.
Re:The Techno-Optimist Manifesto on Monday October 16, 2023 @07:04PM (#37907906)
Any capital intensive project can become a resistant monopoly for the first mover, who then manipulates pricing to prevent competition.
Re:The Techno-Optimist Manifesto on Monday October 16, 2023 @06:57PM (#37907829)
Not sure how optimism in technology translates into raging free market libertarian in a few sentences, but then this guy's never been very subtle or aware. I'm sure his 30-year-younger self would want to kick his today's ass.
Re:LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees on Monday October 16, 2023 @06:52PM (#37907753)
There's lots of good "serious" php out there, the challenge is it has been so accessible there's even more garbage php that's crowded out the go stuff.
Re:LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees on Monday October 16, 2023 @06:45PM (#37907672)
I agree! I think it's actually easier to avoid the big, weak network because it started as a professional tool. I curate my connections and don't accept every recruiter or sales person who sees it as yet another marketing channel. It's been invaluable for reaching out to my former coworkers to try and recruit them
Re:LinkedIn is laying off nearly 700 employees on Monday October 16, 2023 @06:40PM (#37907628)
There's very little correlation between a company that's deeply integrated with LinkedIn tools and what it's like to work there. If you're going to judge all companies based on their recruitment toolchain, good luck finding an acceptable position!
Re:Shelf – open-source asset management software on Monday July 10, 2023 @05:37PM (#36673312)
I built this for my chest freezer years ago (including the domain chowcaster.com), which used a barcode scanner to add/remove items. It worked better than a pantry because 1. Less items and typically higher cost, 2. You usually make a trip to your freezer and 3. It's hard to know what's in there. It basically replaced the clipboard my mom still uses to track her freezer inventory.
Many of the failures in the west are far above what global statistics define as poverty, so this doesn't make much sense
That's pretty unfair. It doesn't look like an html page they'd create for the web but I'm pretty sure they'd recognize html and css. Would someone who templated it in react see the connection?
Maybe, but spaghetti jsx really sucks too.
This isn't really true. More like static pages targeting a million different rendering engines with unbalanced feature support
But the code populating and sending the email is rarely (ever?) Front end code
Re:Win32 App Isolation on Wednesday May 24, 2023 @01:11PM (#36061153)
It's also (at least partially) intentional. Microsoft keeps you so busy on the treadmill you don't stop to ask "wait, should we be doing this?"
Re:Using ChatGPT for Home Automation on Saturday May 20, 2023 @04:58PM (#36015552)
You've been down voted but I totally agree. Why not us the same amount of effort to trying and make a meaningful difference in the world?
Analysis without facts can be refuted without facts.
This history is a pretty convenient interpretation. MS mad big money on their OEM deals and this is after they were all ready being paid for each IBM machine. They were also 10-15 years old at this point
