A lot could be gained by simply storing the jQuery objects instead of doing the lookups multiple times per method. That’s a lot of unnecessary dom traversal.

How big is the local cache of the network on each client device?
He’s not mad, he’s actually laughing.
What we liked about The Screen Savers and ZDTV/TechTV in general was that it was the first time somebody was actually talking to a wide audience about the computers, the web, and gadgets. It was ice water in a desert.

Now, there is no premium on tech content. One no longer needs to seek out Leo Laporte to hear what’s going on in tech or roundtable discussions about it.

"Insanely great" is a Steve Jobs-ism, so in the context of Apple it's usually a reference to that.

If anyone is the Kim Kardashian of tech it's Kevin Rose.
I assume you use it to hack streetlights and steam pipes like in Watch Dogs.

There's probably also a bit of "Apple and Google have solar and fuel cell covered, where can we make an impact?" involved. Not a bad thing. We need to be investing and experimenting with lots of different alternative energy strategies.

I would like to see someone do a large scale implementation of marine current power (underwater turbines spun by currents like the Gulf Stream).

They're handling the CC processing and the whole checkout flow, too. It's not so much a shipping company as a "sell stuff online" company. I don't get why they're presenting themselves that way.
It sounds like the brain will only sleep as deeply as it's safe to. That lines up more with the results in the article than the notion that it's directly about how many times you've been in that location before. When you're in charge of a boat, you have to be alert for any danger. When you're a fireman on duty, you have to be ready to hop into your pants. When you're in a strange sleep lab and covered in biosensors, you're going to be creeped out and on-edge.

Dan Lyons was Fake Steve Jobs, then was a gadget writer where he was a frequent doomsayer of Apple and complained endlessly about the lack of access and review units Apple gave him. When he left that job and went to an advertising startup it was assumed that he'd just burned all of his tech writing bridges and had to resort to writing ad copy, but looking back I'd say it's a fair shot that he wanted an angle to write about startups so he took a job at one.
Re:Non-photo blue on Saturday November 21, 2015 @04:38PM (#10608126)
Any art or writing instrument store will have gobs or pens and pencils (or lead inserts for mechanical pencils) in this shade of blue if you're interested. As the article states, it's good for sketches that you'll ink or pencil over later, since they will disappear if you scan or photocopy them in high-contrast B&W.

It sort of reminds me of the old graphics method of using RGB(255,0,255) for sections of a sprite that should be transparent, since an alpha channel wasn't an option, because it's such a hot pink and such a precise color it would never naturally appear in artwork.

As design patterns go, optimizing your code library so that it makes a more visually appealing virtual city seems like a bad one.

You can do the same with sliced cheese, I've heard.
He'll be CEO of HP in no time.

Sounds like something that would be good for a cloud service to provide. Upload your video and let their farm of tuned servers churn on it for a while.
I didn't know Alexis was a partner at YC. When did that happen?
Square Cash does this exact thing. Uses an app or via email, deposits via debit card number, and has no fees. No idea how it works, but it's how most of my friends send me money. https://square.com/cash
