Rename title to “Napo Child turns to physical books and libraries” please, and thank you.
Re:I accidentally Blender VSE on Thursday February 08, 2024 @11:46PM (#39311508)
Please rename the title so it’s more coherent, thank you.
Re:On whether we're living in a simulation on Thursday February 08, 2024 @11:42PM (#39311493)
More unsubstantiated ramblings. Please, for once, can we get something that can be proved/disproved? This nonsensical bullshit is on par with theology.
Re:'Evidence Maximalism' Is How the Internet Argues Now on Thursday February 08, 2024 @05:30PM (#39308686)
SLHamlet I really wish you’d stop posting bottom of the barrel shit from the Atlantic. You want to fix the situation, but you’re part of the problem.
I would suggest, as a kind of an amusing game in possible scenario ideation, to assume that the people who wrote and published this article are running with the presumption that people already know these things are happening. So the main goal of this, therefore, would not be to enlighten an ignorant audience.

We “know” that news are orchestrated. They’re not really news because they’re often planned weeks or months in advance. We “know” that the media is there to shape public opinion. But what could they write to appeal to our biases? Perhaps make a subset of us feel righteous, angry, or smug, on a given day? Play to our vices just to play with us and keep us occupied and entertained?

Think about every person who posts something like “panem et circenses,” as a response, and imagine the smugness they feel at being so clever, has been a planned-for response from the people setting it all up.

As opposed to shitposters on HN who are unqualified in what they state as fact and have no shred of evidence in what they preach.

Why did you read it at all?
Re:Rebecca Solnit: How to Comment on Social Media on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @06:25PM (#39295717)
Everyone I disagree with is a Russian bot.
Re:Appendix is not, in fact, useless on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @06:24PM (#39295708)
Yes, we know.
Is there a Chinese equivalent of HN (niche tech forum, not the Y combinator front)? How do we get access?
Re:How to hire low experience, high potential people on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @01:17PM (#39292088)
Judging by the comments here the article in question was intended to elicit a strong emotional response out of readers. A reflex that predominantly swings towards controversial.

It succeeded in its supposed mission.

Re:Neal Stephenson's Most Stunning Prediction on Wednesday February 07, 2024 @10:09AM (#39289468)
Does Neal Stephenson have an orb of seeing? I haven’t read any of his works or predictions but if he can tell the future then that’s worthy of a scientific study, I would posit. Wouldn’t be called predictions then, I suppose.

Not sure if he’s the only one who wrote about possible future outcomes with the tropes listed in the article. But then they wouldn’t be called tropes either, I suppose.

Yes. Downtown Toronto is full of store-fronts.
Re:Why is the mouse cursor slightly tilted and not straight? on Sunday February 04, 2024 @10:21AM (#39250866)
This is why I ask for qualifications when someone has an authoritative tone.
Re:Simulacra and Simulations on Saturday February 03, 2024 @12:41AM (#39237833)
Note the hardcover edition book as seen in The Matrix does not actually exist and was a prop.
Re:NASA Workmanship Guide for wire splicing on Friday February 02, 2024 @01:05PM (#39231988)
Pair the NASA documents with PACE soldering/rework videos to have a successful outcome each time, all the time.
Not to sound snarky but who is mission local and why should a reader of HN care for their opinion? Have they done a noteworthy op-ed? If so, which one?
Would be nice if Autechre open sourced all the crazy max/map stuff they worked on.
I keep seeing Astral Codex Ten posted here for a variety of topics, including science, politics and others. There is a tone of authority to a lot of the writing. I have to ask, what are these person’s qualifications? Are they employed and directly involved across all these subjects they cover?
Re:A Bad Day for Tech: 31,000 Jobs Slashed (2001) on Wednesday January 31, 2024 @11:03AM (#39205390)
Walked into a friend’s house one day. His dad had a nice home office, hardwood desks with lots of bookshelf space and literature on just about everything to do with IT at the time.

He wasn’t there that week. He was doing long-haul trucking and would be back home in 5 days or some such.

Can you qualify what you’re talking about, so it doesn’t just read like a mash up of words?
For people who are interested in this, you might want to follow the Ukraine-Russian war and see some “combat” footage. It’s much different than anything of the past. Lots of drones dropping bombs on unsuspecting soldiers. Many don’t even see any real combat action. They go there, sit in a field somewhere, get their legs blown off by a drone, and have to be evacuated. Gruesome depiction - what war is all about.
Re:Phones Track Everything but Their Role in Car Wrecks on Friday January 26, 2024 @01:55PM (#39146464)
I’ve been saying that hands-free phones in cars have been a massive massive mistake, but people laughed.

Well they’re not laughing when their children are involved. /gruesome

Re:Amon Tobin – Foley Room site (2007) on Friday January 26, 2024 @12:07PM (#39144949)
Amon Tobin might be on here even, who knows.

I don’t want to say I’m disappointed with his output, because I’m not. His creative and artistic self is far beyond what most people are willing to invest and endure of their life force into, and I appreciate knowing a person like him is out there.

I suppose I’m mostly heartbroken that we’ve had a golden decade of some incredible music from this person and he has essentially disappeared into an abyss of soundscaping. I think Foley Room was the transition period and then ISAM really went all out.

Parallels can be made with bands like Autechre, but that’s a different discussion.

I just want Amon Tobin back.

As a grown ass man who played Vikings/rnrr/superman/War1/War2 / War2BNE /SC1/ SC1X/{basically every released and unreleased blizzard title including alphas}, I really really wish I could see a successor game that doesn’t have pinups of women that look like they have yoga tights and crop tops for armor. It would be nice to have a game that’s a bit less thirsty.
We are saying the same thing.
This is an obtuse thing to say. Religion is simply being used as a cover to exact the will of people. You can remove religion, they’ll find a different rallying point and organize around it. And they have.

In this day and age, we ought to know better than to blame religion for what are ultimately negative actions done by people who have mental problems.
