“Narcissistic features can come from childhood environments characterized by excessive deviations from ideal rearing, where either neglect/abuse (not enough caring attention) or over-pampering (too much caring attention) is present (Stone, 1993).”

“Narcissism tends to emerge as a psychological defence in response to excessive levels of parental criticism, abuse or neglect in early life. Narcissistic personalities tend to be formed by emotional injury as a result of overwhelming shame, loss or deprivation during childhood.“

Walk away. Let Twitter fail. If you stick with someone who abuses power you reward the behavior.
> He acts like a-hole, but then expects unquestioning adoration.

Very typical narcissistic personality disorder symptoms. Narcissists are made not born, by other narcissists, thru treatment that is dehumanizing and inhumane from a very young age. We should give him our compassion and empathy, but not allow him any power. Power in the hands of a narcissist is dangerous, as the orange man showed us.

The CCP is watching this go down with the understanding that if they invade Taiwan the world won’t stop buying their stuff because money matters more than people.
Good point. I encourage you to read up on the personality disorders, they are fascinating.
The big ego stuff and always needing to feed it with claiming credit for everything reminds me a lot of narcissistic personality disorder, which is caused by childhood emotional abuse, so I think we should just humor his ego and recognize it for what it is, that is be kind and understand what causes that sort of thing, while not letting it distract us from the value of the research he’s doing. Intellectually Wolfram is clearly a very intelligent person; emotionally he is underdeveloped.
Re:Hannah Gadsby on her autism diagnosis on Friday April 01, 2022 @07:31PM (#30884387)
I think autism has become the IBS of neurodiversity, and will be retired someday just as the diagnosis of “hysteria” was retired as a catch all for women’s issues a century ago.

It’s probably just a way to access subconscious pattern matching in a way that bypasses the neocortex for output. An intuition magnifier.
This is tragic but you need to seek out a doctor for your mental health so you and your family can heal from this. Money won’t help you heal, and if you continue down this path of not seeking emotional closure this company will destroy the lives of your entire family, not just your son. Don’t let them have that power over you.
The world is better off without Reddit and similar sources of empty dopamine. There’s a big difference between doing well and feeling good. Someday humanity will look back on the early users of the internet as lives lost to addiction while the world literally burned around them.
Putin won’t withdraw unless he can do so while saving face. People are not rational actors, they are emotional actors.
Re:Military gap between Russia and Ukraine on Saturday February 26, 2022 @12:18PM (#30479553)
I think China is trying to do right by China, while the people are secondary. They are such a different culture than the West it’s hard to see their system from our perspective as anything but totalitarian and abusive, but the idea that the collective is more important than the individual is a valid perspective, just not one that fits with Western ethics, which we hold to be the superior perspective, naturally.
Rich people don’t want to go to China or India, and I think if you compare the offerings of the West versus these other two countries for just a moment, you’ll understand why.

Russia is a classic abuser, the only way out from a relationship like that is to walk away regardless of the personal cost.

Reminds me of the outcry over micro aggressions in recent memory. Not to say that these things aren’t emotionality harmful, we shouldn’t dismiss people’s feelings or normalize hurtful behavior, but perhaps we should start asking why people are so sensitive.
Re:Whichever party is in power, policies tend to be similar on Saturday January 29, 2022 @03:27PM (#30130053)
There is something about hypocrisy that has always rubbed me the wrong way. There isn’t much worse than being a traitor to your own cause. Both parties are like this to an extent, but I feel the Republicans are more honest in their motivations and allegiances than the Democrats, even if I disagree with them.

Their coverage of Bernie Sanders, or rather lack there of, in 2016, was very telling. Their public funding should be withdrawn as it very clear they are a partisan organization.
It’s not about taxes it’s about power and control.
Public institutions have succumbed to regulatory capture everywhere. It’s the final stage of Capitalism.
People who are angry will seek out reasons to be angry. It resonates with their neural network.

I think we often mistake the symptom for the disease.

I would characterize all those things as stories which have no place on Hacker News.
This is baseless fearmongering that has no place on Hacker News.

I think everyone needs to start asking why this story is suddenly making the rounds among mainstream media outlets during an election year in the U.S.

It’s an election year. Rather than address why voters are supporting Trump it’s easier to demonize them than reflect on one’s own shortcomings.
Re:What do I do when my boss is sabotaging interviews? on Monday January 03, 2022 @12:20PM (#29783252)
It’s interesting that humans have decided to allow violence to be acceptable and commonplace, celebrated even, while sex is the thing that is taboo. Seems backwards, especially when you consider consent.

Let’s be more like bonobos and less like chimps.
Why is this on Hacker News?
Re:Web3 is centralized on Sunday January 02, 2022 @07:00PM (#29775559)
Isn’t artificial scarcity kind of the cornerstone of Capitalism? Producers restrict supply to maximize profits.
Information ownership and a digital bill of rights would solve this. It should be considered a basic human right to own one’s information just as one owns one’s body.
Re:The leader who's standing up to China on Friday December 24, 2021 @12:54PM (#29675834)
Superpower (from Google): A powerful and influential nation, especially a nuclear power that dominates its allies or client states in an international power bloc.

> I don't know what conclusion to draw from this, but it's just wild to me that China is a superpower, and not only has Taiwan failed to have a revolution, but they're a financial success.

It would seem that China doesn’t meet the definition of a superpower, but I think we should all be very wary of any nation or individual who seeks power over others. Those who seek power are those we don’t want to have it.

Sounds like you might have burnout. Get checked out. It reduces your emotional and intellectual energy resources.
