Agreed, so also don't bailout.
I'm saying that I lived in a city with speed cameras for years and never got a ticket whereas I saw plenty of dangerous drivers get camera ticketed. To the extent to which we expect people to violate speed limits in the normal course of safe driving, the limits should be raised.

Speed cameras typically give you leeway over the limit. And yes, I support interventions that measurable reduced serious injury and death while still allowing you to drive to your destination.

i don't understand why so many people on this site comment on issues they clearly do not know anything about
I would rather revenue raised from speeders and dangerous activities than from my income. I don't think the evidence is very strong that cameras impede the flow of traffic.
I suspect that Flock might even employ real electricians.
The political grandstanding will continue at least through the end of midterm season and realistically we're just getting geared up for 2028.
The absence of cameras necessitates much more a reliance on "those people" profiling style policing than their presence.

Do people feel the same way about speeding cameras?

I find the backlash against ALPRs wildly disproportionate. It earnestly saddens me that our political focus has flowed to these issues, datacenters, college sports rules, etc. while we remain incapable of confronting far more consequential structural problems, like an inability to tax and redistribute wealth.

Best not to engage with this contingent of commentators imo. An outcropping of the post-truth reality.

Fair enough, I couldn't get into Fall so I don't know precisely what he predicted.
Re:Florilegium: Procedural Flowers in LaTeX on Friday October 30, 2026 @01:58PM (#50307741)
I think the phrase 'florilegium' must be an AI basin of sorts as I've had it suggested by AI as a name for a few projects of my own.

> suspect that asking society to trust in a digital middle-man between themselves and their money will be a very hard sell.

Very hard sell? This is effectively how the vast vast majority of people in the US have their money handled.

The means to afford LLMs? These are services that cost pennies.

I think the worry about fake news was a very widely held pre-GAI view.
Print enough money and the credit markets would have no choice but to unfreeze. Picking winners with fiscal policy was always the wrong solution.
i'd vote for a candidate that recognizes the existence of moral hazard, yes
Re:Northflank Breached on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:55PM (#50306686)
to me, this is a variant of security by obscurity and will not fare well in the LLM age

> The Japan thing just reflects the book's age.

Yep. Sorry, thought I made it clear in my comment that this was a reference to the book showing its age.

The comment about popularity with executives was related to this romanticization of Victorian-era social structure that I see as a prominent undercurrent of Bay Area-coded literature, more recent iterations include Too Like the Lightning.

I found Anathem significantly better than Diamond Age fwiw. Different strokes.

Diamond Age you can tell why he is very popular with silicon valley executives (and honestly is showing its age nowadays -- Japan is oddly relevant and the description of future China would read comical for someone in the 2020s). Anathem you can tell why he is popular with nerds like me.

very reddit-era takes imo. it is a bit late in the timeline to be betting on S curves and worrying about deepfakes

platforms are better placed to guard against attackers

the only reason you’re seeing this post is because of the large bug bounty program that actors like Northflank don’t even operate

many of the fences are chesterton, true. but also a ton are just incumbency protection for people/institutions who got to the commanding heights of the economy early enough.
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:11PM (#50305987)
The “truth” of crypto being bad or good is not the same sort of truth space that anthropogenic climate change occupies and mixing them is actively detrimental for climate advocacy IMO.
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:06PM (#50305912)
it is honestly just a much better UX for transferring large sums of money, something that seems impossible in the US afaict
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:04PM (#50305879)
I am hardly a crypto fundamentalist, but it sounds like LLMs help with a lot of the problems you identified
Re:The $6.3B Binance Hack Was Pulled Off in Just 20 Minutes on Friday October 30, 2026 @12:02PM (#50305854)
I feel that pairing a real scientific phenomenon (anthropogenic global warming) with political distaste for crypto is elevating a political argument to the same level as objective reality.
it is too challenging today to capture the value of training your early employees, labor markets too liquid
for liquid markets, the evidence for this is quite good.

i think it is beyond clear that some of you all have never worked in federal government to have such a rosy outlook
