From memory there was LPAR "Logical Partitions" - which were effectively like a VM. and there was WPAR "Workload Partitions" - which had a shared OS and were more like a container.

I had some "interesting" experiences getting stuff to work on WPAR's.

Re:My Bank Keeps on Undermining Anti-Phishing Education on Thursday July 17, 2025 @10:00AM (#44593532)
That is less of a problem in the consumer space where the OIDC Auth providers have giant long lived sessions (google/FB/etc).

In the government/banking/etc space - there is at least FIDO/WebAuthn/Passkeys which also resolves it. But it's a fair criticism.

And the next step down that rabbit hole is xlights: https://github.com/xLightsSequencer/xLights
I'll echo this for anyone else in the comments -- You can watch the cricket episode with 0 knowledge of the show and 0 knowledge of cricket. If you haven't ever seen Bluey - it's a great example as to why so many speak so highly of it. If you haven't seen bluey but want to see what the fuss is (and especially if you have any interest in sports) -- it's only 7 minutes long and absolutely worth watching.
I'm not sure how true that first statement is anymore. Most of the recommendations I see now are "just get a Bambu labs one". We are much closer to 3D printing as a utility as opposed to 3D printing as a hobby than we were ~3 years ago.
Re:Buy payphones and retire on Tuesday October 29, 2024 @04:34AM (#41980922)
Fun thing with payphones - at least in Australia -- Telstra is investing in upgrading them (at least the ones in the cities). They aren't very useful as phones - but they are incredibly well situated billboards that you can plaster ads on top of.

As someone mentioned - the "Arena Starter Kits" worked for us as an intro to the game.

The basic rules around commander aren't particularly additionally taxing beyond that. (This is your special card that you can play every time. When it dies it goes back to its special spot and it gets more expensive each time you cast it). What I like about the commander format (in the few pre-constructed decks I've bought over the last few years) - they can really lean into a theme/strategy more - and the commander really guides you in how to play this deck.

Start with those arena kits - they are cheap and handle the rules. But if your son sees a commander deck that resonates with him (in theme or mechanics) -- I'd recommend giving it a shot.

yeah. But a high number of pixels and a high number of minutes of battery life work against each other here.
Re:Sam Altman, Greg Brockman and others to join Microsoft on Monday November 20, 2023 @05:45AM (#38346095)
Loopt, OpenAI, WorldCoin.. how many do you need to be serial?
Re:Sam Altman and Greg Brockman Joint Statement on Saturday November 18, 2023 @01:35AM (#38316201)
This is hacker news. Sam was the founder of a startup in the very first round of YC. He then later became president of YC. I expect news of him to resonate more around here.

And OpenAI have been the most exciting tech company of the last 12 months.

Lotus Notes used to have that. (Might still do?)

Re:Ask HN: Best Practices Guides You're Aware Of on Wednesday June 21, 2023 @07:56AM (#36417317)
I've seen a few "Best Current Practise" RFC's around standards implementation. eg: here's one still in draft form for OAuth: https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/draft-ietf-oauth-secur...
Re:Passkeys now support external providers on Tuesday June 06, 2023 @09:46AM (#36212673)
So you're covered for "forgotten" - but "lost" is still an issue. What happens when a user loses their passkey? (stolen phone, no backups, house fire, etc).
If I'm reading the docs right (TBH - I'm probably not) it looks like on a z16 you can get 200 cores and 40TB of Memory on a single "VM" (LPAR).

So 1/100th of the CPU and 40% of the RAM. (I suspect the RAM comparison is reasonable - I'm not sure about how to compare the CPU's).

As someone who used to administer an ADMS server back a long time ago -- I'm curious what the gap between spectrum protect or whatever it's called now and commvault/netbackup? I've haven't really looked at that space for at least a decade.
Re:Why is OAuth still hard in 2023? on Wednesday April 26, 2023 @05:21PM (#35720194)
So make sure you are doing PKCE for public clients.

With that, and the redirect URL (and therefore trusting DNS), and the other browser security model stuff…. You’re in fairly good shape.

There’s newer standards coming like DPoP - but it’s probably not worth it yet.

Nuclear weapons?

Re:France's Baby Bust on Sunday February 26, 2023 @07:01AM (#34944883)
Scott Morrison (as a Pentecostal) had religion as a minor part of his platform at least. (I know you probably weren't looking at Australian PM's - but he stands out more so than any of the UK/CA/NZ examples that come to mind. I might be biased though)

No - but they have been referred to as "cool" before. Gotta love the early 90's.

Re:WLED Project on Wednesday December 28, 2022 @12:58AM (#34157938)
I’ve got a pair of these: https://pixelcontroller.com/store/products/70-f16v4.html on either side of the house - local to where the bulk of the pixels are (2 x megatrees and a matrix). And a couple of recievers out from there to other points.
Re:Ask HN: What are you predictions for 2023? on Sunday December 25, 2022 @04:18PM (#34131393)
Here’s an example - not sure on HN discussion: https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration/registration-fe...
Re:WLED Project on Saturday December 24, 2022 @04:15PM (#34121153)
For a home Christmas light display or something similar - I guess 10k can count as large. (I’m running ~14k, about 1100 of them from WLED). For commercial/art installations - I don’t think that’s “large” though.

Something like a f16v4 can run 33k pixels. But maybe you want more points of control remotely distributed?

Re:WLED Project on Friday December 23, 2022 @04:15PM (#34110704)
WLED has sound reactive plugins for built-in effects. Looks like there's some new stuff in .14 for this as well -- but I haven't followed closely.

Or if you wanted to externalise it completely - it supports DDP/E1.31 -- you could generate the required effect externally - and just send the commands over the network. That should do 40 updates per second for 300 pixels. Ideally send it over ethernet - but you could probably pull it off over a good wifi network.

Re:WLED Project on Friday December 23, 2022 @04:09PM (#34110642)
I'm curious -- why something small like a DigQuad and not something beefier like a Falcon/Kulp?

(I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "large scale" -- but WLED/ESP32 doesn't really tick the large box for me)

If you haven't seen it -- Qantas are pushing ahead with "Project Sunrise" on A350-1000. So you'd get to MEL or SYD without a layover - but with something like a 20 hour flight.

Re:The Crime That Killed Shinzo Abe on Sunday July 10, 2022 @08:43AM (#32044188)
Looking at the DoJ's indictment of Assange -- they stated:

The indictment also charges Assange for his posting of a narrow subset of classified documents on WikiLeaks that allegedly identified the names of human sources—including local Afghans and Iraqis who were assisting U.S. forces in theater, and those of journalists, religious leaders, human rights advocates, and political dissidents living in repressive regimes. Assange thereby is alleged to have created grave and imminent risk to their lives and liberty.

That would appear to be a specific example of secrets that cannot be published?

Re:Tiddlyhost is a free hosting platform for TiddlyWiki on Thursday May 26, 2022 @09:30AM (#31518108)
When I last used it -- it was pretty cool. It was a "web app" that you saved as a .html file to your computer and just opened in the browser (no back-end, no web-server, all-local). I'm not sure how much browsers have locked that down now.
Re:The great junk transfer is coming on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @01:07AM (#31500818)
I think perhaps the middle space? 90's power tools? Any old battery tools?

I consider my petrol mower to be obsolete - but I can't justify replacing it with an electric/battery one when it functions fine.

Have a look at Apple Arcade.
The "Golden Screwdriver" was supposedly a term from the heyday of the IBM Mainframe. (And one of the first links I found - a tesla discussion on HN 9 years ago: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5472663 )
