Re:Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @10:05AM (#50352935)
Explain why GameStop ever had the same market cap as Intel and ExxonMobil. We probably missed the memo that the smart finance bros got.
After covid the masks have fallen. Employees dont care about their companies, they jumped overnight to the highest bidder. Companies don’t care, all of the office theatrics were not needed (remote worked fine). After Trump election they dropped pretending too, all of the corporate responsibility programs were cancelled, and now all of the ceos openly talk about firing their personnel while they have vastly profitable businesses.

It is all going great, we are becoming south Europe. Nobody will be willing to work for any price, and employers will have nobody to sell their products for any price. Enjoy.

Re:Intel stock collapse worsens as $3.5T chip rout spreads on Monday November 02, 2026 @08:54PM (#50346984)
Intel, like Boeing cannot fail. If you believe they can, you better start searching for a bunker.

Advanced chip manufacturing is so incredibly hard. The finance Bojos are clueless, again.

The entire industry of Personal Computing is inefficient, given his definition.

Like we have these billions of smartphones just sleeping all the time instead of running at 100% all the time.

But the whole point of personal computing is that you can do whatever you want.

It is the same old argument between centralization and decentralization. Yes, centralization is more efficient, but also the goals of centralized systems are ultimately wrong. So they are efficiently sailing towards the cliff.

Re:When electric cars were for women on Saturday October 31, 2026 @10:32PM (#50322223)
So many people swear by Miata! Not powerful, not fast, but a blast to drive !
Re:When electric cars were for women on Saturday October 31, 2026 @08:44PM (#50321710)
I never got any excitement from driving an electric car, with the exception of the 0-60 of the powerful ones.

But they are the smoothest commuters I have ever driven. Linear acceleration, super snappy for when you want to overtake, you never need a gas-station if have a garage.

I would take an electric over the camrys and crv’s any day.

Compression is tax evasion!
Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @05:19PM (#50296179)
Oh that is fair. So maybe cost can help drive the decision? If going direct gets me delivery with $10 but door dash needs $40 I am incentivized as a customer to go direct.
I visited China 5 years ago. All the fancy cars of the upper middle class were German. Audis, vw, bmws and Mercedes everywhere.

I visited this year again. Almost none of the new cars were German. I did not see most of their latest models on the streets. And I definitely did not see a single German electric car.

They now have a dozen of brands some of them under the tech umbrella of Huawei that provides the info-entertainment and auto pilot and they are everywhere! And btw the assembly quality was now reaally nice.

No idea about their safety or longevity, but it was nice being driven in them

Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:32PM (#50292867)
Google maps has the website links of your restaurants. You can just click it and order there.

The restaurant then can broadcast the driver demand and delivery prize in their website. Drivers can be scanning all the restaurants in their area and decide if they want to take it or not. Restaurants over time will build lists of reliable drivers whom they will favor when matching.

Re:DoorDash to Acquire Instacart on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:18PM (#50292624)
Cool they will now charge $50 per delivery and give the drivers -10$ ?

There is zero cost of building matching systems (maybe 200$ worth of Claude subscription). Drivers and restaurants will be better off if they build their own ones. These centralized platforms need to die ASAP.

Re:MacBook Pro with PROLED XDR Display and Touch on Thursday October 29, 2026 @02:32AM (#50285228)
On the touchscreen: Folks, we are just whining boomers.

The young generation are raised on ipads and smartphones. They expect that each screen is a touchscreen.

If you watch a young kid interacting with a laptop you will see their confusion when touching the screen has no effect.

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @11:24PM (#50268989)
I understand what you are saying, it just seems that this technology in contrast to any other productivity related technology is deflationary, because there is no alternative avenue to employ the idle labor. Not now, not in the future.

Where will people work on if both blue and white collar jobs go away? In brothels?

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @10:36PM (#50268709)
No extra value was generated in the example. If anything, AI in this example reduces the price of the product AND employment.

Value was destroyed.

The hope is that all these unemployed engineers can somehow generate value? Even if they do they need to generate enough value that would employ 4 engineers.

Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:30PM (#50267845)
So the price of the product will just fall by 80%, unless nobody else cares to compete.
Re:Amazon Is Gutting Its AI Division After Sustained Failure on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @08:14PM (#50267744)
Where? I am not aware of any significant business improvement on the actual bottom line.

We all feel more productive. But did your rust rewrite or my fancy react dashboard produce more value?

Re:How to grow a cacao tree at home on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @01:25AM (#50255012)
I love chocolate.

But man some some times I wonder how desperately hungry were the people who made something edible out of the cocoa tree.

Yeah if you borrow against it, IT IS REAL. The lender considered it real!
Re:I Don't Understand Quantum Physics (2018) on Sunday October 25, 2026 @06:09PM (#50236509)
Maybe we should replace the car speed measurement with something exponential?

Instead of mph/kph the speed limit and speedometers could be on QuadraticSpeedUnits.

Re:I Don't Understand Quantum Physics (2018) on Sunday October 25, 2026 @03:20AM (#50229114)
This. A tesla model Y going 60mph has almost 2 times the kinetic energy (75MJ) of the same car going 45mph (40MJ)

Your stupid brain thinks, oh I am just 10ish over the limit.

Can we unlock FP64 so we can do serious work on second order methods? Even at enterprise grade the last good fp64 gpu was the H100. B100 focused on lower fp due to llms.
The perfect work environment is something very personal.

I am not happy with your decisions for the ide you sold me. I never was, I just coped.

The LLMs just enable everyone to build exactly what they need. And if that thing has an audience of one, so be it.

Re:I Built a Drone with Only One Motor [video] on Monday October 19, 2026 @06:03PM (#50158695)
Now with LLMs? Super easy. Just ask for step by step instructions to build a standard drone. You will learn about micro controllers, physics, pcbs, 3d printing etc.

If you have some time available definitely worth it.

Re:Timestral: Mistral release time-series foundation models on Monday October 19, 2026 @04:11PM (#50157449)
It estimates risk based on your current understanding of the universe.

1. No guarantee that the universe tomorrow will behave as the distributions you used in your Monte Carlo today.

2. If the universe stats serving you 10 unlikely events in a row, is your model model wrong, or just 10 unlucky draws? If your model was correct and you start "correcting it" based on these 10 draws, you now made it wrong.

Re:Timestral: Mistral release time-series foundation models on Monday October 19, 2026 @01:05PM (#50154916)
How does Monte Carlo help mitigation?

I fully agree that all models are wrong.

Their main usage is just replaying the past or encoding the modelers assumptions for the future.

But there is no way to know if a model is good or bad.

There would be if we had infinite universes.

Re:Timestral: Mistral release time-series foundation models on Monday October 19, 2026 @11:42AM (#50153796)
I dont know how one can objectively evaluate forecasting. We observe just one universe. We overfit our models to this one observation we have.

Which is why at the end of the day why nobody trusts or blames the forecasting models, specially in all or nothing types of decisions.

Re:The Engineering That Allows Articulated Buses to Bend on Friday October 16, 2026 @02:05AM (#50114683)
Omg! My whole life I thought that the rear engine articulated buses transferred the torque to the middle axle (the rear axle of the front “bus”)!
Re:Neural Networks Are Already Clean on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:53PM (#50108470)
Even if it can, we can only identify a very wide set of reasons that can interpret the outputs. But what is root cause, that is a very deep rabbit hole.

Let’s say a guy got electrocuted while showering. I can say that the cause is the guy going for a shower. For others the cause is the electric wiring system failure.

Re:Wayland desktop for Linux with skeuomorphic design on Thursday October 15, 2026 @02:34PM (#50108168)
This will be the chance of the Linux desktop to thrive.

In the past ui development was so hard and none of the app developers had the expertise or appetite to do it properly.

LLMs changed that overnight. A good engineer can build great UI for their app.
