Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @05:47PM (#50345128)
All names are made up, though not necessarily from the 80's.
If you were aware, why were you reaching for the further date as to minimize my point, rather than the more contemporary events? It came off as bad faith.

Further, I was not equivocating the US and China, hence my qualifier of "historically" in my other post; it was said that way to point out that China has in fact invaded other countries in the past. If your bar for "no, its ok" is "hasn't invaded a country in the past 12 months", then by that bar, the vast majority of countries on Earth are just dandy. I think that line of thinking is naive, though.

Regarding article 8; for a law to say what is essentially "we will invade you", and your response is "well... haven't happened yet! It's fine!", that again shows either a bad faith engagement or just naivity.

The Sino-Vietnamese war was in 1979; the Tibetan takeover was in the 50's. Regarding Taiwan, how about PRC's own laws? https://us.china-embassy.gov.cn/eng/zt/twwt/200503/t20050315... (Article 8 is the relevant one)
Historically, Vietnam and Tibet, though Taiwan seems on deck to be next.
You can do both
> I said nothing about "throwing up out hands", this is a current research topic. But you can hardly blame the workers for not using a system, the researchers haven't invented yet.

This you? Who's fault is it then? You said the tech doesn't exist (lets take that at face-value for the sake of your argument), so then if not tech, then what? You're just left with people. So are you saying it is their fault or not? Or is it just nobody's?

Yup, so it seems that high-speed rail safety is not an unsolved problem. Wonder what the lessons are? Hmm...
That is not a high-speed rail line... so, no?
Yes, you can say that high-speed rail crashes are not limited to one country (though Spain has had multiple this year alone), but you can't say that it has ever happened in Japan. So for you to argue up and down this thread that everyone calling out issues with Spanish high speed rail safety is wrong, as if it is some sort of intractable problem, is bananas.
Why is it that these fatal train accidents have happened multiple times in Spain, but never in Japan, even though Japan has been doing it high speed rail longer, and at 10x the passenger volume than Spain? Do they have some alien safety technology unavailable to Spain?
Re:Using Blu-ray M-Disk as Backup of Last Resort on Monday October 05, 2026 @07:55PM (#49972375)
Perhaps for some use-cases, the value of the data degrades at a rate proportional to its persistence layer, and doing a re-migration is not useful.

Prompt for PetitGPT research-v1: "How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?"

Response: "A woodchuck would chuck wood if it could chuck it. The woodchuck's chucking action is a form of "chucking" or "chucking in" which is a behavior that allows it to extract nutrients from wood. The woodchuck's chucking action is a form of "chucking" because it is a form of "chucking" that allows the woodchuck to extract nutrients from wood."

I chuckled.

Can we apply this standard generally, or is it just against the people who deify AI?
Re:Humanity has built the records of FATE by accident on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @07:07PM (#49543825)
The author did not call it an evil force, did they? The author seemed more nuanced in what they were saying...

The breaking API changes are frustrating, especially the one that removes forced tool use.
Sounds fine to me! Less inane, pointless, content? Only left with what people chose to exist? Sign me up!
Everything above 127 would be extended ASCII instead of strict ASCII, if that matters.
The context of what the nation was facing in the 1860's (the civil war) and 1940's (world war 2) were very materially different than what it faces now.
Re:GLM-5.3-Flash on Wednesday August 26, 2026 @02:16PM (#49453467)
It is cliche, but I haven't had good luck with having Chinese models openly discuss historical topics like Tienanmen Square. The US models don't seem to have a problem discussing history, even if it points an unglamorous light on the US government.
That sounds awful; it means 3+ times a day a whole plane of a passengers is getting sprayed with this stuff.
I don't know that those timelines make sense; there were highways going through San Francisco... until the Loma Prieta earthquake; and then suddenly not. A cursory look at what Freeway Revolt was, seems to point to a movement in the 1950-1960's, rather than the early 1990's.
Didn't the Loma Prieta earthquake do that?
Re:Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick on Thursday July 30, 2026 @07:37PM (#49117234)
The TV app is baked into the device and is automatically focused if you press up too many times on the remote (and thereby triggering the large banner ads).
Re:Read this before you buy that TV streaming stick on Thursday July 30, 2026 @03:38PM (#49114696)
There are plenty of ads on Apple TV; huge banners right at the top of the UI, and ads that launch before you get to see the content of a show with no way to automatically disable them (you have to manually click through or just wait it out). It is infuriating (to me).
I've hit it with intensely benign things; like asking it to make me a web-based client-side word game. I am guessing it saw the dictionary and pattern matched on various words, though ultimately it provided no explanation for why it triggered safeguards.
Re:JEP 540: Simple JSON API (Now in Incubator) on Thursday July 23, 2026 @01:54PM (#49025560)
I suspect the vast majority of services are not dealing with such massive JSON documents that doing serde on them becomes a material part of their latency breakdown.
Re:JEP 540: Simple JSON API (Now in Incubator) on Thursday July 23, 2026 @01:48PM (#49025474)
The root of a JSON document can also be an array.
On-point surveillance by people would be a good start; I do not see why it needs to start with endless surveillance by machines run by a private company.
A society glued together with cameras rather than people, is shallow.
