Re:“Click to subscribe, call to cancel” is illegal, FTC says on Wednesday November 17, 2021 @07:24AM (#29252151)
Many banks will automatically transfer recurring subscriptions to your new card as a "helpful" measure.

> Updater services allow merchants to know when your credit card information changes, and to alter their records accordingly. If you don’t want to continue the subscription, you’ll need to cancel it directly.

...there's a boy buried at the bottom? i hope that's a typo!

From his blog:

> I've applied to work at Codecademy three times, once in 2014, again in 2015, and most recently in 2020. I've been rejected all three times. I wanted to prove to myself I was capable of building something like it, so I decided to build my own version.

He probably sees himself as the misunderstood, genius creator of The Oasis rather than the conniving corporate bureaucrat in that movie (I never read the book version)

> He was assassinated for his role in leading the Iranian nuclear weapons program, not for his scientific achievements.

Recall that America withdrew from the anti-nuclear weapons agreement with Iran, that Iran's Ayatollah has declared a religious prohibition against nuclear weapons and that while Israel does have nuclear weapons, Iran is instead pursuing a nuclear power program for civilian energy.

> According to Gareth Porter writing in Foreign Policy, Iran's aversion to nuclear and chemical weapons is sincere because of the "historical episode during its eight-year war with Iraq", and Iran never sought revenge for Iraqi chemical attacks against Iran, which killed 20,000 Iranians and severely injured 100,000 more.[2] According to Khalaji, the fatwa is also considered to be consistent with Islamic tradition.[4]

The article literally talks about retired generals tweeting.

that sounds incredibly mundane

Why is the area referred to as "the west Indies" unless he thought it was India

Again, Columbus was not a very clever man.
Are you suggesting that we should take moral cues from our enemies?

Or that normalizing peacetime assassinations won't have an obvious destabilizing effect?

Assassinating scientists makes you happy?
> I can tell you beyond a doubt people are mostly (99%) reasonable

And yet, actual fascist governments have come to power even in nominally democratic countries.

People might only be "reasonable" when left to their own devices but there could always come a day when propaganda, sectarianism and social turmoil gets so out of hand that people don't see so reasonable anymore.

> Aviation authorities swiftly implemented new regulations that required two authorized personnel in the cockpit at all times, but by 2017, Germanwings and other German airlines had dropped the rule.

happy?

How many people do you encounter? In which parts of the country? How much do you know about their political views? How do you know whether someone is a Nazi if they don't announce it?

You could have met plenty and not known it. Or your sample size of acquaintances doesn't include people who frequent 4chan.

Unions have been on the decline for decades going back to the deregulatory and anti-labor policies of Neo liberal governments and that probably has a lot more to do with the problem than pronouns
in your quote, it says that private businesses and political parties are making these decisions. that's likely done as part of their regular screening processes.
I think the point was they had no way of knowing, and that free will is real so it is wrong to punish someone deemed to be fated to crime.

To fully qualify the statement made by the person you're replying to:

I would argue that it is indeed clear that around half of the individuals facing chronic homelessness urgently require mental health and addiction support.

for those people, they may likely face crisis and be consequently unable to upkeep any dwelling that is freely provided to them unless they have extensive support and possibly even in-patient care.

* About 30% of people who are chronically homeless have mental health conditions.

* About 50% have co-occurring substance use problems.

This video [0] argues that most Australians fail to understand how the system works and that the mainstream political parties actively mislead voters into thinking that their voice is "wasted" if they vote for a 3rd party

[0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bleyX4oMCgM

I think you're making an assumption about the assumptions of the person you're replying to.

Many voter beliefs are implicit and how we express our political preferences can sometimes be reducible to a simple matter of group allegiance.

People don't need to be highly informed to effectively participate if the voter's top priority is to support a certain group interest (i.e., a union member supporting labour) rather than individual legislators or laws.

Funny quote, but I don't think front-line infantry have the best parking spaces. That would be the flag officers.

Re:Why we should end the data economy on Saturday June 05, 2021 @05:47PM (#27408700)

Notable examples:

* Strava revealed the position of US military bases

* Muslim prayer apps sharing location data with US military

In my own experience, I work for a call center. We have many important American companies as clients. They give us access to their systems so that we can service their clients. I am overseas dealing with their customers and I can access their personal information. I can see their face linked to their Facebook profile. I admit I've been tempted to misuse the information any time a customer makes me angry.

The Red Scare began in the 1920s, long before nuclear weapons were invented, so the threat of nuclear war was not the primary determinant factor characterizing that situation
I feel the exact same way every single time this comes up but for the first time this one is actually interesting. Has there ever been any incident like this before? Even if it is just a bunch of drones, it is interesting to see that they're flying without any kind of wings and for there to be this many of them swarming a navy ship is at the very least militarily significant even if it isn't aliens
