Re:Bay Area cities want to end single-family home zoning on Saturday July 03, 2021 @12:57PM (#27723002)
Rent seeking refers to economic rent, which is not the same thing as "housing rent". It has a very specific definition when used in the context of economic rent seeking. Renting out houses for people to live in is not rent seeking.

No, that's what the lightfield does. You see different physical images depending on your angle to the screen
How does any kind of fine for PG&E not end up being a regressive tax? As long as they are the only supplier in NorCal the costs will just be passed on to all NorCal residents.
Re:Bazel Build System Support for LLVM on Thursday October 29, 2020 @04:15PM (#24935205)
> That would work if, like golang, bazel was the "default" package manager for everyone. Right now it's not easy to get, for example, vulkan or muslc or qt as a bazel package.

I agree, but I don't think a "Bazel management system" would solve this issue, because the problem is people buying into bazel in the first place

> It's also not easy to publish a version of your package (A) that depends on another package (B). This would create a diamond-problem like situation where your package (C) depends on both packages (A->B, C->A, C->B). So, some code needs to resolve these issues and reproducible identify the exact hashs of everything to pull in to make it a not-manual process.

This is a good point. However, I think realistically, effort would be better spent currently on making it easy to bazelize existing code. I have (unfortunately) never been able to pull an external library without manually bazelizing it, and this only actually ends up becoming a problem when bazel picks up enough momentum in OSS that you are likely to find a external library that is already bazelised.

Re:Bazel Build System Support for LLVM on Wednesday October 28, 2020 @08:16PM (#24925694)
Github is already a bazel package management system though? If the package is a bazel workspace all you need to do is add a http_archive rule pointing to that github repo
Re:Seattle approves minimum wage for Uber and Lyft drivers on Wednesday September 30, 2020 @07:21PM (#24645273)
The point is that there is no idle fee. The legislation just states the minimum required wage for time and miles spent with a passenger, as well as a $5/trip minimum.
Re:The stock market and economy have parted ways on Monday July 13, 2020 @02:50PM (#23824198)
> While stocks may have some intrinsic value, it is commonly acknowledged that their value as assets is substantially lower than their stock market price. Moreover companies continue to buy their own stocks further reducing the value of stocks as assets.

This is not really relevant. Companies have larger market caps than their intrinsic assets because people trade on discounted cash flow.

> Any small players (yes that means you and me) can easily lose their shirt in a down turn as we do not have reserve assets or other means (hedge funds) and are not able to participate in the next hand.

1. There's no mechanism that forces you to "call" a bet in investing. It's not winner takes all. 2. Why can't you allocate your bond/equity split such that you do have reserve assets?

I don't think Google's implementation of their hermetic par files are open source.

interesting how University of Waterloo was never mentioned given its heavy ties with YC, and that it was his main university.

Re:Microchip Technology to Buy Atmel for Nearly $3.6B on Thursday January 21, 2016 @07:46AM (#10944829)
I think you kind of answered it yourself. Microchip probably offered a higher portion of the deal in cash and atmel shareholders find the cash to be worth more than dialog stock.

Does nobody ever have to use google to look something up? Something as simple as sickness symptoms or how to make bread or whether it's going to rain on Saturday? Surely these would require net neutrality and won't be all covered by youtube and wikipedia?
Re:Magic Leap reveals more details about its technology on Wednesday October 21, 2015 @06:40AM (#10424619)
I'm still not convinced. AR through visual SLAM is not extremely difficult. All the demos here are indoor and from the occlusion handling for the first scene (0:13) you can see a slight shadow on the right of the table leg so I assume it's using some kind of structured light to sense the depth (versus multi camera/stereo systems). Outdoor tracking with this kind of approach is very difficult because sunlight basically destroys all the information.

The difficult part is where the system portrays this information to the user, which they have not shown yet. Their patents indicate some kind of projection directly onto the eye but there are obvious problems with that, such as when you move your eyeball. Also, running visual slam on a mobile device at real time with a respectable framerate is another challenge.

Re:Magic Leap reveals more details about its technology on Wednesday October 21, 2015 @06:29AM (#10424587)
I'd imagine it'd be the same reasons as to why a TV or projected screen looks great in real life but terrible when it's through a camera.

Re:Waterloo Co-op: A Blessing and a Curse on Friday April 24, 2015 @02:01AM (#9431661)
I think everyone is overlooking a major benefit that the co-op program brings, to the school as a whole. I feel the co-op program at Waterloo is responsible for the awesome entrepreneurship/startup culture that I don't think exists anywhere else, including places like Stanford or MIT. I believe Sam Altman even once talked about how Waterloo have the best track record when it comes to startups. This culture is the reason I was really set on Waterloo when I was deciding where to go for school.
