Re:DeskPad – A virtual monitor for screen sharing on Friday October 11, 2024 @03:59AM (#41807309)
It's not mentioned here yet, but since this provides some kind of virtual display, you can use this with https://deskreen.com/ - if you have an tablet that does not support sidecar then this is a viable option for an extended display. Setup is a bit of a hassle but it works.
Oh yes. This one is Jetbrains only but there is also a VScode alternative for this. There is a plugin called httpyac and I believe it also supports the same kind of configuration (???) and variable syntax. It's great not switching to other apps for making an http request.
Re:Facebook feed seems borked but no status updates yet on Wednesday August 24, 2022 @02:59AM (#32575782)
I re-installed and same problem. Seem to be on random accounts. My wife's feed is okay
Re:I still love PHP and JavaScript on Tuesday August 02, 2022 @11:37PM (#32327380)
IMO you cannot even compare PHP and the ecosystem what it was a couple years ago to what it is now. It has come a long way.
Re:Gisgraphy – open-source geocoder based on open data on Monday April 26, 2021 @05:16AM (#26940699)
I've had a pet projects that involved a lot of geo-things. I've tried heaps of ways to do it but nothing comes close to Google unfortunately. Especially in non-USA addresses.

Are paid options any better? Like the one from Arcgis? Or is google still more accurate?

I'm no expert but NZ houses suck. Little to no insulation. Some air can go in gaps between doors and windows, etc. Central heating is non-existant. Old stock. Mouldy. Damp. During winter some landlords tell their tenants to open windows to air the house out. That might be it?
Everyone did a good job. The government did a good job. The people did a good job. A lot of sacrifices in the right places.

And just last night NZ time, we had the results of the elections. Current government won by a landslide. And surprisingly a Greens candidate won in Auckland Central. On mobile - but Chloe is just great for Auckland Central!

Re:Async-GraphQL: A GraphQL server framework on Saturday May 09, 2020 @08:58AM (#23124353)
Same. I wished they didn't call it GraphQL. When I first looked into this, I had to explain to people that it was just a spec. A spec that can be implemented in different languages. It is not SQL.

I jumped into GraphQL form the PHP side. And after understanding what it was the next step was simplly exposing an endpoint. From there, https://webonyx.github.io/graphql-php/ took over.It went like: Route --> Controller/action --> Use `graphql-php`. For the resolvers, I was able to re-use the services the returned data.

The "entry barrier" to the existing legacy-ish framework we were using wasn't too hard. But the learning curve to solve problems in "GraphQL way" is much harder to push as most people are used to REST way of doing things.

Re:A Touchpad Embedded Keyboard on Sunday March 10, 2019 @07:05PM (#19355324)
The arrow keys. Ugh. That set-up - left and right keys same size as normal keys - I could never get used to it on the new macbook keyboards
Re:Apple, Firefox tools aim to thwart Facebook, Google tracking on Monday September 17, 2018 @03:40PM (#18009266)
I tried to switch to Firefox. But the biggest roadblock for me were Profiles. My Google Chrome profiles are so old and useful that I feel handicapped when on Firefox.

Also, does Firefox can I have multiple profiles on Firefox now?

Re:Huawei caught cheating performance test for new phones on Thursday September 06, 2018 @11:14PM (#17931606)
Can these be grounds for refund?
Is there a good supply of bamboo in SF? If there is, they make really good ladders. Very light and very strong.
Re:Health dangers of sleep deprivation on Sunday April 29, 2018 @09:52PM (#16955150)
After we had our son, my sleeping pattern has changed. I sleep early at around 730PM. Then wake-up at around 8 or 8:30PM. Then sleep around at 12:30-1AM. Wake up at 7AM.

I get to take some sort of power nap for the day. And when I wake up, I feel fresh. Does any one else have a similar routine?

I'm not sure if it's healthy, but I do not feel tired or deprived at all.

Re:Show HN: Wey – A fast, open-source Slack desktop app on Monday April 09, 2018 @03:27PM (#16796144)
The beta version of the slack app for macOS seem to be better https://slack.com/beta/osx I can run it all day without problems. The non-beta one, consumed too much RAM.
Re:The MacBook Air: A Decade’s Worth of Legacy on Tuesday January 16, 2018 @04:56PM (#16163083)
For me my next purchase would probably still be a Macbook Air. Right now, I'm using an Air it I love it. The comfortable enough to work and use anywhere. But I wont be buying any time soon. The one I'm using now is about 3 years old. It's still reliable and haven't noticed a single problem with it. This comparing to my brother's 2 year old MBP riddled with LCD problems.

I've had MBPs before and it seems they tend to break easier. They are a bit hot and heavy.

Re:Earth on AWS – Open geospatial data on Sunday November 05, 2017 @05:15PM (#15632013)
I'm always interested in these kinds of data.

A few months ago, I was looking at different open sources to geocode a lot of addresses around the world.

I have tried openstreetmap and some VM from datasciencetoolkit - both have poor results.

Are there other sources aside from Google? Google appears to be the most accurate.

Like Philippines then. I imagine it came from the Spanish?
If this turns out to be big amongst other things, then some "big" news will come up in next few days to cover it up.

At least that how they would do it in Philippines.

Re:Django 1.11 Released on Tuesday April 04, 2017 @10:34PM (#14039192)
I really think it needs it. Although "start project" works as it is, I can't be bothered installing MySQL and configuring nginx - that takes a bit of time especially if you miss something.

There should be something like this for Django with all the "de facto" tech that a dev might need.

Re:Django 1.11 Released on Tuesday April 04, 2017 @04:28PM (#14036859)
Does Django have an equivalent for Laravel's Homestead?
Re:2000 year old Roman lead used for physics on Monday March 27, 2017 @10:50PM (#13973655)
Off-topic: I love reading articles that use 2-column format. I think it should be done more often. Although I wished the font would have been a "seriffed" one.
Re:iPad 9.7‑inch on Tuesday March 21, 2017 @09:21PM (#13927825)
Who needs this?!
Re:Show HN: Distributed Scraper on Monday March 13, 2017 @07:54PM (#13863712)
Not sure what the UI of kimono looked like but with this one, you can more or less create one for it if you wanted to. (or ask someone to do it)
Re:Show HN: Distributed Scraper on Monday March 13, 2017 @07:47PM (#13863676)
Thank you! This is very interesting.

I have wanted to implement something like this one - ie: Lambda doing the downloading of the page itself.

I have wondered how it would work with very strict sites like Yelp - limits similar to what you would get in their API (so doesn't make sense not to use their API).

What are your stats like if you don't mind? How much people are using it and much are getting blocked (404 or 500 after 1000 requests, etc.)?

Edit: Is it possible to use my own credentials for AWS?

Re:Show HN: Distributed Scraper on Monday March 13, 2017 @06:48PM (#13863256)
"Distributed" as in using proxies? Where do the requests come from when I scrape a page?
How does Dell warranty work? ie: If I buy it from another country?

Reason I go with Apple laptops is that their warranty goes across borders. Just enter a serial number, and then your done. No more receipts, etc.

Re:Ask HN: Developers with kids, how do you skill up? on Wednesday March 08, 2017 @02:24AM (#13818600)
We put our son to sleep at 8pm. After fully sleeping, I can Netflix 1 movie or do work on my side-projects. On weekends can't get anything done. Too tired from activities during the day.

Oh i create tickets for myself on bitbucket and work on those at night.

Re:Why I left Mac for Windows: Apple has given up on Sunday March 05, 2017 @07:09PM (#13799741)
Question: How solid is the Linux Subsystem on Windows?

I have been looking into switching back to Windows for months now. The only thing that's keeping me is the trackpad on my macbook. It's just so convenient.

Spot on!

I'm lucky enough that my day job isn't that stressful that I do not get "burned out" when I get home to work on my personal projects.

I love my job and I love working with the people in the company. The culture is very good and not toxic. However, trying something new or building something fun, it is not possible always within the job. It's fixing bugs; figuring out processes, etc. But as long as I am not burned out at work, I still find a few hours every night to do something I really want.

Without my personal projects I would be bored to death.

Is it just me or is VR involves a lot unnecessary effort for the user?

ie: I don't want to walk around. I want to sit comfortably without straining my arm or walking into walls.
