Re:NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:02PM (#49898677)
I mean if this was someone taking Nand2Tetris several steps further it would be impressive.

claude "create a NAND gate-based computer, giving it a crappy web page"
She goes to a different school
Or 3 or 4 lol
Re:It's Time to Investigate the AI Labs on Monday September 28, 2026 @09:37PM (#49886969)
I agreed with the first half of this article and I liked where the author was going with it but I was disappointed in the overall point.

He's painting these companies as hyping themselves up and they are. They are manufacturing these BS stories and everyone's discussing them at all levels.

But then he goes into we need to investigate what they're really doing?

No. You made the case that they are releasing these stories for publicity and that's exactly what they are doing.

That's what we should be investigating. Free publicity and market awareness. Or maybe look into why they are trying to corner the market through government regulation and ersatz monopolies

Well stop clapping you stupid git

Iykyk

I was going to dismiss this and then I read the whole abstract and that is, pretty much what it says. Oh but I guess it also says they came up with a model for how far apart things are determining how far you have to travel to get there
Re:Google Rolls Out $899-Plus 'Ai laptops' on Monday September 21, 2026 @12:36PM (#49789569)
I'm currently on the fence about Chromebooks. The killer feature that's missing is good development tools, but I can get a decent laptop or a good mini PC and a Chromebook for the same amount, but as far as I know there's not a good solution for local dev.
Re:Being kicked out of the tech industry on Saturday August 29, 2026 @03:55PM (#49492818)
Ok the "decade" thing can slide in my opinion. I've been doing this for 25+ years but my resume won't show that.

But. Based on my recent job search, getting eleven notifications per day means he must have been submitting hundreds of applications per day. Over the course of 4 months, I submitted for something like 120 positions. I'd be lucky to get one rejection a day (usually just no feedback ever).

And yeah the like and trust thing is paramount. You can be a John Carmack level engineer but if you're a jerk or not trustworthy then yeah it's going to be really hard to find a job.

Re:Being kicked out of the tech industry on Saturday August 29, 2026 @03:50PM (#49492775)
Yes exactly
Re:Being kicked out of the tech industry on Saturday August 29, 2026 @03:49PM (#49492766)
Sorry but this reads so much like whining and assuming everyone is out to get the writer.

I agree with the sentiment that the resume is a very weak resume but it's not clear if he's getting rejected outright or after an interview.

Listen I've been laid off several times. The thing that was different from the last time is the number of auto rejections I would get. How do I know they were auto rejections? Submit application ... One minute later: thank you for applying... Two minutes later: unfortunately you don't have the right requirements.

I could say it's because of the use of "AI" in the hiring process (don't even get me started on some of that BS, but it's laziness. Maybe just filtering off key words like has been done forever.

And referrals? In what universe is that "cheating"? Yes I've had cases where I've made it to the decision point - just me and another candidate. Guess what? The other candidate was a referral and got the gig instead of me. This used to be called "networking" but somehow it's "cheating"?

My advice to the writer is to update that resume to what people are looking for now: the impact of things you designed/created is important! It saved X hours per week etc are better understood than "I worked on a thing that did something".

And the question of "calling out companies" etc ... Yes, that can be a problem. If I'm looking at hiring two people and one has a public record of this moreso than, say, a public record of projects (I don't know if this is the case here, but I'll assume) and the other has a public record of projects, well guess which one I'm going to hire. The worst hires are the ones who are going to "cause problems". Not criticizing calling out companies but if I make it a point to criticize companies I work for, what is a company supposed to expect out of me?

The writer is the cause of and solution to his own problem but instead he's victimized and being "kicked out" of the industry.

Re:Dolly Parton has died on Tuesday August 25, 2026 @05:12PM (#49440707)
No I'm guessing that she arranged for a small personal ceremony only - insisting on that would be in line with her character.

Uhhh ... What
Exactly. Those who suckle from the orange teats get rewarded ... Of course until they disagree with him then they get cut off
I live in Nashville. This story is all over the place in general. People assume all the things like it will make their rates go up, etc.

I'm not opposed to data centers in general but the location is right next to our zoo which has grown tremendously along with the city over the past twenty years. Took my kids there when they were small and we still have a couples membership.

It's very difficult even here to get facts about this whole thing, but I'm pretty sure the million dollar an acre price was a factor in the original deal.

Now on top of that take a city government who's still recovering from many criticisms from the ice storm earlier this year where people were without power for weeks. The demand for action has been great and very loud.

But ... eminent domain to take over the land? That is a terrible precedent to set and very dangerous. Honestly if the politics were on the other side here (say, the state government who claimed eminent domain), it would probably be seen as the terrible thing it is (the state government is incredibly maga but the city is very left).

Re:Show HN: A zoomable timeline of 4M Wikipedia events on Sunday July 19, 2026 @12:40PM (#48969598)
I think you need to check these. I saw one item (a bank maybe?) that was started on "20141221" or something. Didn't get parsed so it is treated as the year 20241221, not 2024.

So many examples of this right off the bat. This needs some serious work/testing.

If you're going to use an LLM to code something, it is your responsibility to own, maintain, test, and understand that code

Why does the ACM hate VPN connections?
Is this not an old story? I seen to recall hearing it awhile ago
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2026) on Sunday May 10, 2026 @10:50PM (#48090555)
A planning app for smart telescope users, taking into account the specs of the telescope, weather, light pollution, etc to help a user plan imaging nights

Re:A Founder Tried to Pitch – and Got a Restraining Order on Thursday April 02, 2026 @08:46AM (#47613742)
The only useful bit I can get from that incredibly ugly/spammy site is that the restraining order referenced "workplace violence"
Are you saying there's too much undocumented tribal knowledge? If so, I agree
Sadly same.
Re:Once (Again) on Monday March 16, 2026 @04:41PM (#47404582)
Should say single binary
Re:Once (Again) on Monday March 16, 2026 @04:39PM (#47404563)
The better question is: why force me to watch a YouTube video instead of just writing it down
Re:Once (Again) on Monday March 16, 2026 @04:39PM (#47404554)
Probably because there's more to it than a single number.

You can always just use the docker file to figure out how to install/configure things yourself

Please don't troll

As a Tennessean, how did I just know that Marsha Blackburn would be all over this
Re:Khamenei Trade on Monday March 02, 2026 @09:39AM (#47218516)
"Prediction markets" ... Yeah sure let's go with that and not "betting sites".

Unless I'm missing something and sites like Kalshi are somehow SEC regulated.
