they are valuable b/c they built something billions of people use. I suspect the revenue loss from every one of these FTC recommendations being implemented would not have a material impact on either of the businesses you mentioned

I think a lot people probably experienced or witnessed petty theft or assault, and figured those same people might commit murder at a high rate. When you have a personal experience like that, or multiple, the natural reaction is to apply that experience to another situation.

It actually says a lot about SF that people would jump to that conclusion. SF is not in a good place. It has deteriorated over the past 2 decades. But it's not why Bob Lee is dead.

what about RLHF at scale?
There's some countries that work like what you propose.

Those are not the countries Americans are flocking to for good reason.

> the general presumption that Big Government will protect you from yourself is extended just another smidge

What would be a better alternative? Asking a top 20 bank for their data room whenever I need to deposit something over $250k?

At some point, there needs to be some level of trust with simply putting money in a place and not a single cent disappearing. That should be a reasonable expectation in any functional society.

Anything otherwise would be highly inefficient, creating unnecessary work that produces little to no value.

Re:FDIC Takes over Silicon Valley Bank on Saturday March 11, 2023 @02:07AM (#35106180)
yep, it's a solvency issue. The minute they tried to offload the bonds at a price lower than they paid for them (which seemed like the right thing to do to fix the liquidity issue), they were effectively in a hole and even if they waited 10 years later, would not have been able to cover the deposits.

They NEEDED to raise capital.

Their liabilities > assets.

They were 100% insolvent.

I think they did the same to Polymarket in the US.

Re:Elon Musk owns Twitter: The story so far on Friday October 28, 2022 @04:03PM (#33377028)
musk has consistently attracted top tier engineering talent.

the one thing I'm almost certain of is twitter will have better margins under musk.

It may not be worth the $44b though, he's starting at a $20b defecit.

Re:Apple Will Not Reinstate Epic’s Fortnite Developer Account on Thursday September 23, 2021 @11:19AM (#28630439)
I agree with this, Epic is forcing Apple into a no-win situation where they either do what Epic wants or come off very poorly to regulators.

Epic doesn't need to win this specific court case to get what they want, all they need is for this to stay top of mind for lawmakers to change the rules in favor of developers.

Re:Court issues permanent injunction in Epic vs. Apple case on Friday September 10, 2021 @05:55PM (#28487335)
I assume by that you mean the developer tools to create apps in the first place.

Apple is free to not make developer tools anymore, that's their choice. Nobody is forcing them to. They do it b/c apps make the iPhone better. In fact an iPhone without apps is pretty useless.

Re:Stripe bans Trump campaign on Monday January 11, 2021 @01:13AM (#25725283)
> When the Snowden story first broke back in 2013, many on HN argued that, hey it's all good, I have nothing to hide, and I trust our President.

Most of the public was pro-Snowden, especially the tech community. Telegram rose like a rocketship as a result of concerns over NSA backdoors.

The lives of congress men and women were undoubtedly at risk. I think this directly contributed to Twitter and many other tech companies clamping down on the mediums of communication for radical Trump supporters.

Tech platforms fear revenge from congress for enabling what took place, and it suddenly became a no-brainer business decision to ban Trump from social media.

Re:Sketch: Proud to Build a Truly Native Mac App on Wednesday October 28, 2020 @06:49PM (#24925076)
Agree, Figma is definitely slower, but Sketch has issues too when there are too many objects in the workspace. I think if Sketch made their performance 10x better, then I'd agree that native apps are better, but it's more like a 1.2x than a 10x.
Re:Sketch: Proud to Build a Truly Native Mac App on Tuesday October 27, 2020 @11:46PM (#24914923)
Can confirm, we've been using Sketch since very early days, long before it was popular, and every single designer we have knows it like the back of their hand. We made the switch last year to Figma (just to test), and now it's 100% Figma.

Sketch is a great individual tool, but Figma is a great organizational tool.

For Sketch to write this means they don't plan on competing with Figma, I assume because it would likely put them behind multiple years in R&D.

Re:Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account on Friday August 28, 2020 @11:03PM (#24313018)
Unless you believe a market that includes nearly the entire population of the United States to be "typical", are we not then in agreement that Apple can still be found to be a monopoly, according to the excerpt you just posted?
Re:Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account on Friday August 28, 2020 @10:21PM (#24312770)
Market share does not actually determine monopoly. You can have 100% market share and not be a monopoly. Conversely, you can have 50% market share and be a monopoly.

Apple has more active users in the US than Android btw.

The fallacy being repeated is actually people defining monopolies by referencing market share.

Re:Apple Terminates Epic Games' Developer Account on Friday August 28, 2020 @09:28PM (#24312455)
> not getting the special treatment they want

They are not asking for special treatment.

They are asking for the courts to curtail Apple's absolute power over how applications can be installed on an operating system designed for general computing.

That would be a game changer for the entire developer ecosystem.

Whether that's good or bad is another debate, but the industry-shifting impact it could have is undeniable.
