I left Cisco fairly recently and was relatively close to Paddy in the org chart (same group). Interesting to see this come up here.
Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:42PM (#50309180)
ah yeah, I mean if that's the case, I think that's orthogonal, right?

In my interpretation of the words, I tend to think of optimism as being the brave thing because having hope is more difficult, and IME, you can only muster energy to solve a problem if hope exists. Conversely, pessimism to me feels cheap and easy, and if you say "everything's fucked, what's the point" then nothing gets solved

So, it's probably more of a quadrant/compass along the axes of optimism/pessimism and proactive/passive

Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @03:12PM (#50308793)
What makes you say optimism is cowardice? I'm genuinely curious.
Re:AI Isn't Replacing SREs. It's Deskilling Them on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:04PM (#50307829)
I am consistently surprised that I'm unique for enjoying, and if I may be so bold, being pretty good at, both Ops and appdev. Now I'm not the greatest in the world, but I really do firmly believe now that most generalists should strive to be able to do both at a journeyman level.

To my understanding, this _is_ DevOps in the original sense of the word, and the version where they are a separate team is an offshoot bastardization.

At my last job, it was somewhere in-between where we had DevOps specialists who were regular software engineers who allocated the bulk of their time to building / running infra via Real Code (Pulumi vs. TF, minimal YAML wrangling etc) and built paths for app devs to self-service as much as they could. That, I felt, was a really excellent setup.

Commentary text like this, once described here on HN as essentially the chat context leaking into the application, is absolute anathema to me. Something about it makes me irrationally annoyed and immediately not want to use the software.

I think, to me, it signals the pinnacle of vibe-coding in the sense that I can't imagine that the output was looked at closely and the copy still remained. When my own agents try to write stuff like that, I remove it immediately.

Like I said, maybe irrational.

> Its not a labor shortage, its a shortage of people for whom doing the job can pay the bills they need paid.

I think this fact is often missed by middle/upper-middle-class tech folks (like a majority of this forum). From up here, it's eas to view labor as being an equitable exchange between two parties, but as you said, that is simply not the case when the pay doesn't even come close to covering expenses.

The refrain I often hear is that those people should then just work harder and get a better job - but then the question is, who delivers the food? To which I have yet to hear a satisfying answer (besides incentivizing better wages for those workers)

Which is why I wrote

Which in retrospect, the original comment was more dismissive than I intended.

That said, I stand by the replied being significantly more rude and aggressive than warranted.

Re:AI Is Not a Tool on Friday October 23, 2026 @02:26PM (#50213368)
I would engage with this if it wasn't written so rudely. I have thoughts on the subject and would like to discuss them in good-faith, but this is not it.

My original comment may have been a bit sarcastic, I admit, but this comment seems to serve no purpose other than to jab and try to dunk on me, so I won't engage.

Re:AI Is Not a Tool on Friday October 23, 2026 @02:08PM (#50213095)
Can you provide links, sources, anything? I genuinely would engage with it, but it's unhelpful to just essentially say "go read the thing I've read and stop being dumb"
Notion mail specifically wasn't killed because it got replaced by AI in its niche, moreso that the company is shifting their resources.
Re:AI Is Not a Tool on Friday October 23, 2026 @01:57PM (#50212928)
sigh No, it doesn't have consciousness, nor have human thoughts, etc. We (humans) are just _really_ good at anthromorphizing and pattern-matching. We do it to our animals, assigning human feelings to their expressions, and so of course we'll do it to the tool that outputs in our language.
Instead of just making claims back-and-forth, can this thread provide sources? I don't believe either of you without proof.
Re:What shall I teach my son? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @06:43PM (#50188729)
Your first point is what I was trying to convey in my parentheses, which is that the world is more peaceful than ever before and yet it feels like it's closing in on us increasingly so due to the vast amount of information thrown at us with no viable way to process it. This, paired with the ever increasing amount of things we are expected to fit in with no reasonable way to do so leads to burnout _Fast_
Re:The Decoherence Trap on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:53AM (#50182065)
They're not better than I am. Faster? Sure. Better? No.
Re:What shall I teach my son? on Wednesday October 21, 2026 @10:26AM (#50181594)
Speaking as a member of Gen-Z (26) I can confirm that most of my anxiety is not from my hippy parenting, but from an increasingly chaotic world (I mean this in the sense of information overload, not ratio of peaceful times to war time) and dwindling economic opportunity.

I do think that millenial-style parenting has many flaws and is guilty of messing of kids in novel ways, but it's dishonest to say that it's more guilty than social media, stagnating wages, etc.

Do you have evidence that Reuters is misleading? Please prove it, otherwise this is just hearsay
Re:The Fatal Flaw of 911 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @09:02AM (#50130779)
I absolutely agree! Maybe the rest of my comment didn’t emphasize it enough, but that’s exactly where I was going with my point. The incentives and training (or lack thereof) are wholly militarized and not suitable for real community engagement.

That’s a fair interpretation, thanks for the clarification!

I do, my coworkers do, my friends do, etc etc.

Re:The Fatal Flaw of 911 on Friday October 16, 2026 @04:26PM (#50124133)
I think you’re spot on about specialization. Police are chronically under-trained and unequipped to deal with such a broad swathe of what they’re expected to, from speeding tickets to mental health crises. As long as there’s a combination of ill training, high pressure situations, and bad pay, there’s going to be terrible outcomes.

I definitely think that there’s a ton of ways in which the American police state is a horrible shitshow that attracts power-hungry assholes, but I also think that the nature of the job as it is currently set up inevitably will lead to mistakes from cops who wouldn’t have violent behavior otherwise.

That doesn’t excuse it, of course, but it’s important to understand the circumstances that create horrible outcomes.

Are they free though? You have to pay for inference
I think you’re assuming the poster genuinely agrees with what they posted, whereas this quote seems to point towards a more devil’s advocate view:

Thanks for the honesty! I don't blame you, it's hard to write good copy.

Cheers and good luck!

Re:Show HN: Petal, open-source CoScreen/ScreenHero finally free on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @05:50PM (#50095889)
I really wonder if it’s just me, but I have a deeply visceral reaction to AI copywriting that is largely irrational I’m willing to admit.

The product looks cool! It’s just… reading that sentence makes me __immediately__ lose all interest.

No, that's our _fastest_ coder, which is a different thing than _best_

Re:Meta and Microsoft Limit Employee Use of Claude AI Tools on Thursday October 08, 2026 @08:51AM (#50005231)
I think that's a fair prediction, and you're right that there was a curve in 2026.

I do think their definition of profitability is likely skewed, but you're right that 2025 is out-of-date.

I did realize I forgot to link the article sourcing my claim in my above comment, and too late to edit, so here it is: https://www.reuters.com/business/finance/anthropics-ipo-pros...

I'll check w/ archive.ph in a bit, thanks for the tip.

Is the hope for them that they'll outpace their run with a massive revenue growth? I believe that they have that, but numbers like a net loss of $46b in 2025[0] seem hard to overcome.

Re: self-reporting, I'd be inclined to think they're using non-GAAP practices to make it sound more favorable, but I am by no means an expert, so willing to believe I am wrong.

I'll read the article you sent; this is just my off-the-cuff thinking.
