Still working on Falling Fruit in my spare time! I've packaged the PWA into a mobile app using Capacitor, seems to work well on Android, would be great if someone helped me with iOS (mostly permissions for things) as I have no devices for it.

Some specialised roles I had in the past included data engineering and MLOps for a healthcare AI start-up, development of bioinformatics software, and building open data resources. Currently contracting as a bioinformatics software developer for a seed genomics unit of an agritech company, but missing start-ups and again wanting to build something bigger. Let me know if you're hiring!

Friends who go to therapy don't seem to finish their sessions relaxed, it's usually more of a shaken up state, whereas that ego pampering style of interaction you describe would surely not have that effect?

I a broadly skilled generalist senior developer - specialised roles I did in the past included data engineering / MLOps for a healthcare AI start-up and bioinformatics ops and research.

Bio summary: After a graduating with a maths degree in 2014 and an early career role in finance, I found my path to data engineering in bioinformatics in 2016, initially as a full stack developer in a research institute and then taking on increasingly data focused work. I worked in life sciences for many years, until in 2023 I joined a healthcare startup, which for an exciting year and a half was a great opportunity to experiment with 'modern practice' like Databricks and integrating LLMs. Looking for new opportunities to engage in meaningful work.

From my bioinformatics and data engineer experience, I'm good at interfacing with researchers and turning ideas and prototypes into working products: developing data flow workflows, evaluating performance of models, providing interfaces and entry points for clients, and more.

Throughout my career, I've had the privilege of contributing to significant projects in academic, commercial, and non-profit settings. If my profile or any of the technologies listed resonate with you, feel free to reach out via email!

Constantly reminding someone of your authority surely leads to resentment over time. Is it not basically a recipe for your kids systematically removing you from their life as they grow?

Falling Fruit beta.fallingfruit.org

We're a foraging resource where people can put locations of fruit trees and other opportunities for urban harvest. We're building a React app to replace the current server side rendered website and mobile app, it's in a really good place now and quite close to feature parity but there are still small layout issues and missing features, plus everything else we could potentially do. There's also a NodeJS API that could be worked on.

I am a data engineer / full stack dev / bioinformatician, with a number of turns in my career so far. After graduating from a prestigious university and landing a high earning job in 2014, I left it in 2016 for a role in a research institute, and then worked in life sciences and did contract work on the side, until in 2022 AI became big and I joined a healthcare start-up. The start-up was a fine gamble but did not really work out so since April this year I'm temporarily hacking on a non-commercial project on the side to being a dad, and looking for more opportunities to do worthwhile work.

I am good at turning prototypes into products, and orienting myself in novel domains.

Over the years I was able to do plenty of meaningful work, in academic, commercial, and non-profit contexts, and I would like to continue. If my profile - the CV or one of the technologies listed - is a match for you, do send me an email!

I reckon the main thing is to use this free resource, someone valuing it is a good thing. If there's not enough for you or someone else, the right solution is to just plant more.
Re:Map with public fruit trees on Monday September 30, 2024 @06:38AM (#41695608)
There's a crew like that for apple trees in Glasgow! They rack up boxes and boxes from all around the city. Then they run events where you can press apples, and all the fresh juice gets given away.

I have been writing software and working with data since 2014. My last professional role was a data engineer in a seed stage company, I had a number of jobs in academic life sciences before that, a back-end engineer type role in an investment bank even earlier, and currently going through a period of just doing open source as a hobby and being really excited about programming enabled by the fantastic tools we have at our disposal. Looking for either a role in an environment supportive of AI enabled software or another opportunity to take part in building something that's only just beginning to be possible.
