I'm curious how you intend to do that ?

It is not so unusual to read books that have stood the test of time at least somewhat.

Newness is not really a valuable quality when it comes to books, barring some exceptions like books on subjects that change frequently and meaningfully.

Diminished quality however is a meaningful signal, and would give most serious readers pause.

While I personally believe a lot of America is worth saving, it is not up to us, and the arcs of history take many decades to play out.

As Brexit has shown, even when sanity returns, the previous reality does not.

So it is not that we wish the USA ill, or harm, quite the contrary - we did not ask for this. We have clearly understood the message and we are focused on our own future now.

> But I believe you can relax, because this is all nonsense.

Sorry, but no.

Even if there are no kinetic attacks towards allies right now, the "crazy old man" is causing real harm. Harm to global stability and the world order, economies, to businesses and individuals, to long term initiatives such as research and healthcare. But most importantly, real harm to the trust between ourselves. Western allies can no longer trust the USA, it is broken, we no longer have the same values.

The first time in 2016 we forgave, everyone makes mistakes and Europe is certainly not free of them. But the American people chose to elect him twice with full knowledge, now everyone suffers.

So the rest of the world forges its own path now. America's military, economic and cultural hegemony will decline. Not tomorrow, maybe not even quickly, but inevitably. Godspeed !

not human civilization, just the United States.

Yes, prices are high because demand exceeds supply, but there are no shortages that have not been followed by supply gluts.
Does anyone have a roadmap ?
Sustainable weight loss requires a holistic approach across 4 main areas:

  1. Diet - healthy eating habits that result in a caloric deficit while giving you the required energy
  2. Exercise - strengthen your body, contribute to caloric deficit, improve how you feel. Start slow and prevent injuries.
  3. Psychology - work on the reasons that caused the excessive weight and develop habits that help maintain weight loss in the long term
  4. Medication - use of semaglutide and other GLP-1 medications in support of the above
Combining these will set you up well for results. It will still not be easy, it will still take a long time, but it can be done.

Keep in mind that people are strongly opinionated about things like diet and exercise, but certainly in case of severe obesity, any exercise and any caloric deficit is better than none. Don't listen too much to people who have no been overweight before, they don't speak from experience. My personal view is to work towards a combination of cardio, strength and mobility work, but most important is to find something you think is fun or exciting, as the habit-forming aspect is key. The rest will follow.

> The secret is you have to make your own meaning.

Existentialism is one approach, or you can turn towards Camus and accept life has no ultimate meaning, and live intensely despite that knowledge.

I limit slow requests with mod_reqtimeout and have e.g. reduced request body limits as I don't accept large uploads.

A real sustained DDoS would probably still require upstream handling by larger infrastructure than I run.

It depends on what you define as unwanted traffic.

Personally I do not have an issue with bots as long as they behave and are not straight up malicious, so I rely on a combination of rate limiting, a fine-tuned OWASP CRS ruleset and an aggressive Fail2ban enforcement (hit 2 triggers and you get a 24 hour ban, 2 bans and you get banned for 30 days).

My sites also make extensive use of static elements and caching.

Read more engineering content, e.g. https://circuitcellar.com/
There are equal weight funds instead of the usual market cap weight funds.
Yes, the insiders want to cash out at the peak and reduce their exposure. The general public will be holding the bag here, simply because the passive investments will be forced to buy into these at huge valuations before price discovery can reasonably complete.

I'm 45 and I still don't know what I want to do when I grow up. I have had 2 distinct successful "career paths" up till now, and am at a point in life where I can do pretty much anything but not everything.

Essentially, you pick a path that in this moment a) you feel like doing, b) you have access to, and c) aligns sufficiently with your values, expectations and life needs. You can be very strategic about it, or you can wing it, there are no correct answers.

Then when you get older and are in a different place in life, chances are you become ready for something new, and then you go do that.

Careers and goals don't need to be forever, change is guaranteed and "life" is an awfully long time to decide on when you're young.

Not to mention that physical jobs in e.g. manufacturing have been highly automated by "the robots" for decades

Curation is the future, and those with the depth and breadth of knowledge required to do it well will be in high demand. The human touch will become a selling point and attract those in the know.

While there has always been room for middle-of-the-road "content", there have also always been those that seek a higher value. I expect that segment to only grow.

Re:Ask HN: How to approach new people in 2026? on Sunday March 01, 2026 @10:34PM (#47213556)
You might receive a lot of well-intended advice that does not take into account the social context of Scandinavia, which is a particularly hard nut to crack when it comes to casual conversations with people you don't know.

Swedes seem to be context-driven in this regard. There are certain places and activities where it's OK to strike up small talk, outside of those accepted situations, they keep to themselves. One I have found is sports, this winter I've had casual chats with about 80% of the people I come across at my local ski trails. But it's mostly at the starting point or at the car park, not while you're training. Another one is regular organised activities, e.g. check out your local friluftsfrämjandet, or activities around specific interests and hobbies, and show up somewhat consistently. Every kommun will typically have a registry of local clubs on their website, it's called a föreningsregister, read through it and see if something strikes your fancy.

Luckily, as foreigners, we typically get a bit of a pass for not being entirely up to snuff with the social rules, but knowing some Swedish will help you.

Good luck !

Be kind. Create beauty.

I agree regarding the audience, but for those on a more modest budget it is possible to get an affordable FT subscription to their digital version of the print newspaper.
