I deploy the old version to new virtual machines and reconfigure the loadbalancer to direct traffic to those instances. Or I do a rolling downgrade, one machine at a time and excludes machines being downgraded in the LB. This takes a minute or so (everything is automated) and there is no downtime.

Whats the problem with rollbacks? Just redeploy the package of the previous version?
Re:Microsoft Announces Nano Server on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @02:42PM (#9342863)
That is not a promise.
Re:Microsoft announces Hyper-V Containers on Wednesday April 08, 2015 @02:39PM (#9342848)
That referrs to Nano, not Hyper V virtualization?
Re:An open source status page system, for everyone on Sunday April 05, 2015 @08:12AM (#9323820)
Sure about that? My experience is that large companies host their dashboard in their own environment and that the dashboard will be down when their own infrastructure is. If by large companies, we are talking about >10 000 employees or so.

Doesnt MySQL Cluster do this pretty well?

According to their documentation, the data storage for log events is Elasticsearch and if the Elasticsearch data is lost then the logs are gone. Consideribg that ES is not a database and may lose data this sounds a bit scary to me.
Same in Sweden.

It was clear to me at least.

Windows Phone 8 passes as well. Closed source for the win! Did I do that right?
Re:Samsung Global Privacy Policy - SmartTV Supplement on Sunday February 08, 2015 @04:13PM (#9018589)
What I meant was that most people assume it is secure. I mean only a few % at most has any clue how email works. I suspect most of my colleagues who has been working as developers for decades don't know that email may pass through dozens of hands. Of course if you know how it works you know its not secure, but very few people knows how it works.

Of course there has.

Re:Atom Editor or Sublime Text – which one to pick? on Friday February 06, 2015 @05:40AM (#9008414)
I feel the same way about Sublime. Notepad++ starts faster.
Your point about US being larger doesn't really stick. My ID is a valid identity card in 26 countries with 420 million people, aka Schengen.
In Sweden we have a personal number. It's unique to every person but its not secret at all. You use an official identity card or passport or the electronic variant to identify yourself. I'm guessing its some kind of privacy issue behind there not being a similar system in US? Because it works pretty well.

Supporting something like RT is a lot more than just making it compile.
Re:Modernize your C++ code on Sunday February 01, 2015 @05:11AM (#8979599)
Im such a user. Sometimes I feel the urge to comment, but it happens so rarely that I won't recall my username or password. So I probably have 20 accounts on HN and 40 on Reddit, each with just a few posts.
Re:Modernize your C++ code on Saturday January 31, 2015 @07:07PM (#8978576)
Resharper exists in a C++ version. Just preview, but still.

I actually use such a service at home sometimes. If I am supposed to take an important early flight, I use a service called "Personlig väckning" - Personal wakeup. Its been around forever. You call them, tell them that you want to be woken up at 04. They call you at that time. Its a bit safer option than the alarm clock for me. Because I actually have to answer the phone, say good morning and say my name to confirm they called the right number. One time they called me again because I didnt sound fullt awake.

Of course there a modern solutions to this problem but I kind of like the "human contact aspect" of it. It costs like $5.

Re:Auto Recovery for Amazon EC2 on Tuesday January 20, 2015 @01:24AM (#8915702)
Can you explain that for me? I use Microsoft Azure a lot and there things like this just happen automatically. No configurations, alarms, etc.
No, 100 connections 10 Mbps each would make it 1 Gbps not 1 Tbps.
