I find that increments of 1C are too small to be useful in daily life but increments of 5C are quite big. As a result, you can't really round degrees Celsius to a multiple of 5 whereas full precision integer temperatures are too precise. So for example 15C and 17C feel like different temperatures, but each 1C step from 15C to 16C to 17C is not really useful.

In contrast, it's very reasonable to round temperature to increments of 5 degrees Fahrenheit. So for example 58F and 60F are basically the same temperature as far as my perception is concerned.

Do you know if running causes a person to have more or less heartbeats in a given time span? I'm not particularly medically knowledgeable and not sure.
Outside of distance learning - I think computers are very rarely used for CS exams in my, albeit dated, experience.

I've generally had good experiences with the various compressed X11-like tools. One example is x2go, but there are a few.
Re:There Goes the American Muscle Car on Thursday August 28, 2025 @11:54PM (#45059979)
As someone who lives in a city, I'm not sure what I'd do with a car that is smaller than a tank. If it's a small car then it's probably for local trips and super inconvenient to park / re-park / etc. I want a big car to comfortably fit my family, our outdoor toys, and maybe even tow something.

Even if I lived outside a city, what do I gain by driving a smaller car? Going from 35 to 55 mpg? Parking is plentiful and equally convenient for big cars these days.

I think this person wants a space between Fizz and Buzz.
I really like the table of confusion as a way to look at this stuff. I find the terminology somewhat confusing and it's much easier for me to just look up the formulas.

That means 90% accuracy should mean (true_positive + true_negative)/(whole_population) == 90%.

Assuming this is post-Obamacare, do you know why your insurance didn't cover it? I had this simplified model that insurance covers everything once you hit maximum out of pocket and I'd love to learn how that model breaks down in practice.
Re:Is Running a More Efficient Way to Travel Than Walking? on Monday August 12, 2024 @10:55PM (#41231743)
You cam just ignore the Zone 2 advice as a relatively new runner. It's more useful when you're running high mileage.
Do you know what percentage of after tax income people paid fir this? I'm curious how other compares to today's services.
Is a 30 minute commute that bad? I feel like a lot of people mindlessly browse for 60 minutes a day at home. You could do that on your commute instead of at home and get housework done at home.

This was a professor at UCLA.

> People don't work in university research for the pay, it's garbage, I assure you.

It's pretty good in the US. I just looked up a randomly chosen assistant professor at a public university and they make $200k. I only looked up one person's salary so this isn't cherry picked.

I'm not saying that they're in it for the money. I'm only disagreeing with the part where you said that the pay is garbage.

It's not an infinite amount of money and it's less than industry, but it seems not garbage considering job prestige, job benefits, etc.

Re:Labelling soya foods as ultra-processed is unhelpful on Sunday September 24, 2023 @07:49AM (#37632252)
I highly recommend store brand soy milk, and tofu for that matter, if it's available in your area. It shouldn't require any additional ingredients to tatse good.

I spend virtually no time tinkering with my personal computer, but I did get one with Linux pre-installed.
Re:Microsoft Edge is starting to annoy me big time on Sunday September 03, 2023 @03:35PM (#37373604)
For home use, I haven't had too many problems with mainstream Linux distros in a while. I'm tech literate, but not a technology professional.
I think the material quality of life in important industrial cities like Norilsk was much higher than the provicnes in general.

I don't have any statistics on this, but I feel like I see far fewer plastic bags littering the streets these days. That alone is a win for me personally.
I find that IF actually has less effect on my social life.

I can just go to a barbecue on the weekend and eat whatever if that's my one meal for the day.

I find it much harder if I have to plan to leave room for other meals.

Re:These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us on Friday March 17, 2023 @11:17PM (#35205701)
The truck is nice for avoiding setting up camp in the rain because it's easier to hose out, but you kind of need your own truck with a cover and such.

That's a good call on vans though. A cargo van might be a good idea for legitimate well maintained campgrounds.

Re:These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us on Friday March 17, 2023 @08:50PM (#35204866)
Do you baby tips for finding cheap ones?

The cheap rentals in my city are at the airport and that makes it a pain to use them. They're not really cheap if I ascribe a sufficiently high value to my time. They also often have limited inventory and don't have a pickup truck right now.

Even at the airport, it looks like a pickup truck is $200 for the weekend. And honestly going to the airport is enough of a pain that I'm less likely to do things that require a truck as a result.

If I owned a pickup truck and kept it in a garage by my place then I would be far more likely to make last minute decisions to go camping or yard sale shopping or whatever.

Re:These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us on Friday March 17, 2023 @08:35PM (#35204769)
For personal transport, I'm biking or taking public transportation or taking a taxi.

A car is a luxury good for someone in my situation and a pickup truck is the common case for that luxury good.

Re:These Stupid Trucks are Literally Killing Us on Friday March 17, 2023 @06:42PM (#35203868)
I'm an urbanite with no need for a car.

I don't currently have one, but I want to buy an efficient pickup truck or unibody pickup truck when I do buy one.

In the rare occasions that I do want a car, a truck is really helpful. I don't really see another solution other than cheap and convenient pickup truck rentals.

I'm no expert, but that Utah bank sounds pretty risky to me.

At least treasuries and MBS are relatively liquid securities that can be quickly sold at prices that don't deviate much from their marks as long as you're marking to market.

Those loans to local businesses and home owners sound much, much scarier.

You pay for most real time data on top of the Bloomberg subscription. Bloomberg would be an unrealistically good deal if it included real time data.
That's so interesting. Thanks for sharing.
Companies don't need special tax exemptions to write off losses.

Typically, expenses directly reduce income without any need for a special exemption.

It sounds like the author deliberately moved to NYC. They didn't just accidentally end up in a place where this is possible.

Re:How to Live Near Your Friends on Sunday February 05, 2023 @03:51PM (#34669215)
Those tips sound really useful and actionable to me.

Hosting dinner parties regularly even if you're tired is a great idea. I'm going to try doing this.

I probably don't want to co-sign an apartment, but letting people stay with me for a long-ish period of time sounds good. That seems doable for someone on a typical Facebook / Google / etc income.
