the ironic thing with Teams is that the one thing on the label - managing teams- is AWFUL. I'm sure company culture comes into this, but for an app that sells itself on the idea that it makes little teams for people to join, it's awful at letting you manage the teams. i'm a member of like 80 some odd teams and maybe 3 of them give updates. All the rest are silent.

it's a disaster. it's fine for voice/video calls, but it's slow and not fun to use in the app on my dev machine (i7/32GB RAM)

Re:Building an iPod for 2022 on Tuesday February 15, 2022 @11:00AM (#30348196)
I did this last summer with my iPod classic. Fun writeup, great way to revive old tech and reclaim media ownership.

If you have the iPod already, it's a great afternoon project and not too expensive to do.

Re:The unbearable fussiness of the smart home on Wednesday November 24, 2021 @08:01AM (#29329559)
This is entirely on the author. Sure these vendors make awful products and poorly maintain them - but nobody is forcing anyone to buy them or integrate them into their house. I have yet to hear, or especially see, these devices make anybody’s life easier than doing the task manually.

I never think about light in my home, I flip the switch if I need it - lights seem like such a chore to my friends who have to issue commands to a speaker and that’s one of the few things this tech is supposed to be good at

Good technology gets out of the way and let’s the user do or be or experience something. This is the opposite

Re:Old-school computing: when your lab PC is ancient on Wednesday June 02, 2021 @12:00AM (#27364689)
I think most of the world is like this. New equipment means big CapEx asks. A lot of manufacturing runs on an old XP machine held together by ebay parts and duct tape

Same. With a full OS. Chromebooks don’t cut it for me

Just learned that double tapping the Super button opens the app drawer. game changer for me
How is density a virtue?

Anybody know why the account was deleted. Did the poster fear for copyright violations?
WSJ posted an article with some more detail.

Re:Grabby Aliens on Thursday March 18, 2021 @12:41PM (#26504557)
I think that’s my answer. I like good guys/bad guys. There’s enough grey areas and anti heroes in real life. I want simpler fiction
Re:Grabby Aliens on Thursday March 18, 2021 @09:39AM (#26502553)
Are the Culture the good guys or the bad guys? I read Consider Phlebas first and felt such a whiplash moving into Player of Games or whatever the next one was. I want to like that series but I just can’t figure out if I’m rooting for bad guys or not.
Re:FreeBSD 13.0 – Full Desktop Experience on Wednesday March 17, 2021 @10:31PM (#26499188)
It is kinda funny how we’re going back to a kind of mainframe/terminal model with the way everything works now
Re:Report on an Unidentified Space Station (1982) on Wednesday March 10, 2021 @08:44PM (#26419133)
It’s got a good Rendezvous with Rama vibe to it. Y’all know of any other sci-fi stories in this vein?
This was super encouraging to read. Thanks for sharing your experiences
Why is HN so anti crypto?

Blockchain/distributed databases seem like really cool tech with some valuable real world applications outside of just coins and stonks but I feel like we never get into that here.

Or is this just a vocal minority thing?

Is that 6 months up yet? I forgot to put that date into my calendar
There’s an Air Force base in New Mexico. Could totally be something from there. Or aliens I don’t know
Re:LZ4 – Extremely fast compression on Wednesday January 27, 2021 @06:54AM (#25927119)
I think it’s middle-out compression

You mean a saiyan scouter? https://dragonball.fandom.com/wiki/Scouter

Always wanted one. So bad. I don't think our tech is there, we still can't accurately measure someone's power levels. But one day, our grandchildren will and it will be beautiful

But your real estate doesn’t change, you just redecorate your 1-room apartment each time you want to do something different
Re:The people the suburbs were built for are gone on Sunday January 24, 2021 @09:43AM (#25892393)
I’m the outlier among my friends- I grew up in the suburbs and I absolutely love them and want to go back. Nobody else I know does.

Granted, my city is huge and so living in the city feels more suburban than living downtown would.

This is amazing! I bought the remake on Switch for Christmas and this little version perfectly wraps that up! Job well done to the maker
Re:Dungeon Magazine on Thursday January 14, 2021 @01:21PM (#25779995)
Matt Colville, dungeon master and DnD 5th Edition video maker on youtube, is launching exactly the kind of magazine you're talking about. The magazines are free to his patreon subscribers (of a certain level and above) and will be for sale in the MCDM (his DnD content business) store.

This would be worth checking out - I'm going to buy them to support more cool content like this.

Re:TimeTagger: Open-Source Time Tracker on Wednesday January 13, 2021 @12:19PM (#25765090)
This is overkill for your example 1, but the apple watch has an inactivity tracker. It reminds you to get up and stand for a minute every hour if it notices you aren't moving. I've found it useful when I'm sitting around or working at a computer for long stretches.

For your time to stop alert, the only thing I've found that helps is throwing everything on my outlook calendar - it gives alerts 15 minutes in advance of the appointment and that's enough to make me realize that some task is coming up and I need to prepare for it.

I don't think I've seen an app per se that does exactly what you want

Agreed. Most of the pronunciation - and the original meaning behind these non-words - is incredibly opaque and unintuitive
Re:Things We've Learned from NASA's Mars InSight on Thursday December 17, 2020 @09:36PM (#25463157)
I’m surprised to hear there’s so much Martian seismic activity, even if some of it may be false positives from wind affecting instrumentation. I guess I’d always thought that since the surface was lifeless, that the whole planet would be too

I’ve never been through an earthquake, will frequent magnitude 3ish earthquakes disrupt our attempts to colonize Mars?

Re:Google outage – resolved on Monday December 14, 2020 @07:03AM (#25416279)
Do tech companies post that kind of data?

When I worked in the automotive industry, the Detroit Big 3 American auto makers had figured out their cost per minute of downtime. They would even charge that to their suppliers and anyone who shut down one of their plants.

It was something like $10,000 per minute since they’re able to roll a complete vehicle off the assembly line about every minute

Re:Google outage – resolved on Monday December 14, 2020 @06:59AM (#25416174)
My Gmail app on iOS keeps displaying a “No Connection” error even though my phone is connected to the Internet
Re:Microsoft Fluent UI System Icons on Wednesday November 04, 2020 @05:17PM (#24993620)
Same thing. Went digging for the save icon - interesting that the continuous save feature drops the floppy icon. I think as we move to more cloud hosted documents and stuff we'll see floppy drop out for some looped paper kind of thing. I hope the visual language of a floppy sticks around forever
