Re:Mosquitoes Are a Choice on Tuesday October 06, 2026 @06:19AM (#49976487)
That's exactly what I was trying to achieve. Some people stepped forward and explained one side and some explained the other side. I learnt something which is the point.

Others just downvoted me because they disagreed (which is not what you're supposed to do, afaik).

I don't even want to engage anymore as others just think I want a billion people to die to save some 'bad' mosquitos, which is obviously a ridiculous statement.

Re:Mosquitoes Are a Choice on Monday October 05, 2026 @05:33PM (#49971126)
I am merely suggesting we don't really understand the consequences and things may not be as simplistic that everyone thinks. i.e. kill "bad guy" mosquitos, save a billion people.

We start spraying crops so we can end world hunger (or just make more money) and screwing around with other things and now we're killing bees and other things. This will ultimately come to haunt us.

The death of all bees would count as infinitely bad (in terms of crop pollination) and we're doing a very good job in making that happen.

Your saying we do things that save human lives, irrespective of the outcome? Let's start by removing cars [0], that would save ~37K people.

Yeah, it gets a bit silly real fast. I've never been accused for forcing a billion to die, so thanks for that.

Re:Mosquitoes Are a Choice on Monday October 05, 2026 @01:15PM (#49967629)
I was suggesting that it's rarely that simple.

If we lose those frogs, it most likely would cause a cascade across other species. There are lots of things that eat frogs.

Re:Mosquitoes Are a Choice on Monday October 05, 2026 @11:23AM (#49966061)
Isn't there a knock on effect of removing them?

Does anything eat them as food? Wouldn't it be environmentally damaging to remove a source of food for X?

Re:Platform-Independent SIMD in Go on Friday September 25, 2026 @12:18PM (#49846560)
You probably weren't looking for a tutorial about SIMD, but just in case you were interested, Mitchell [0] did one recently that got on HN [1]

[0] Mitchell Hashimoto: "Everyone Should Know SIMD" https://mitchellh.com/writing/everyone-should-know-simd

I don't see it. May I be the first to tempt you of the delights of firefox and ublock-origin. :)
Re:Astra for Coding: Why Are We Doing This Again? on Thursday September 10, 2026 @08:33PM (#49652032)
It might be super interesting if you could elaborate on what you're doing differently with Asta. Are you reviewing generated code? Are PRs being reviewed? Are you more of a orchestrator? etc
>Unless there is AI regulation or a coordinated slowdown between labs, human extinction in the next few years seems very likely

Sigh, no explanation of how this would occur (even after multiple questions on that thread).

It's starting to sound like hot air and frankly tiresome. I want data worksheets.

> where the default choice of headphones is Bluetooth.

Unfortunately not giving wired headphones away (with the phone purchase) and not including the standard 3.5 mm headphone jack, means that 'normal' people just put their phone calls and play their video on speaker, to the annoyance of everyone (on public transport).

Discussing back and forth whether Tim Burton is still alive is a rabbit hole worth exploring.

Not sure what would be more interesting than that.

Re:Doomscrolling Ourselves to Death on Sunday September 06, 2026 @10:41PM (#49593244)
I mostly limit myself to 3 pages of HN, till I see a count of 90 as the last article, then I stop.

I don't want this site to be destination for doomscrolling.

I was so addicted to this back in the day, I dare not download this.

How does this work, does it use the twitter api?
FYI: uBlock-Origin flagged this. No idea what's on this article, but might want to skip it.

If security/isolation of unknown not quarantined code, Windows would not be high in my list as a sandbox.

I've been meaning to learn/run QEMU on my linux box. I assume I don't need to do anything apart from rebuild the image each time I need to do this?

Yes I most likely will tell them to get lost, but if I get an invite from Larry/Sergey I want to be ready.

Baked and made into a curry works for me. i.e. Baingan Bharta

It's remarkably easy to make at home, although worth trying as a side dish (at a restaurant) if you like Indian food.

It's not something that you can just wave a magic wand. The steps to change the constitution is really really hard (deliberately).
Re:Deflock Casa Grande on Tuesday July 28, 2026 @03:45PM (#49088938)
I kinda expect the s/w engineer who wrote this would create an audit log. i.e. police-id, licence-place-id.

Well that's the way I would write it.

Be careful, that sounds almost like a dare...
Is this is the snap version of tb? If so it has restricted file access.

Maybe try the .deb version? (maybe need to back up your data in ~/snap/thunderbird/

Re:Librepods: AirPods liberated from Apple's ecosystem on Monday June 29, 2026 @08:12AM (#48718245)
Sure on first point.

However Zuck is directly addressing Apple hostility regarding Airpods, irrespective of how you feel about him/meta.

Not parent.

I believe (I don't own their new M-5) their Macbook Pro are very well regarded in terms of trackpad, battery and screen as one (if not the) best out there.
